Bukavu - Dissident General Laurent Nkunda left the east Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) town of Bukavu on Sunday afternoon, hours after he promised a complete withdrawal of his men, who had captured it four days earlier, witnesses told AFP.
Nkunda left the capital of Sud-Kivu province aboard a four-wheel-drive vehicle at 13:00 and headed in the direction of the airport, which lies 30km to the north.
On Sunday morning the general, whose capture of Bukavu had sparked fears that the DRC's fragile peace process was falling apart, told journalists he had decided to pull his men out to the area of the airport as a "show of good will".
