Johannesburg - Two people accused of pretending to be policemen and then demanding money from a truck driver they pulled over, appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on Friday.
They allegedly flagged down the truck driver in Kempton Park on Wednesday and, after showing him fake credentials, said he was suspected of selling stolen goods, said Gauteng police spokesperson Richard Zuma.
They took him to their car, drove away with him and then demanded R15 000 for his release.
He had R5 500 on him and asked that he be allowed to collect the balance at home.
They agreed and waited for him at a chicken outlet. However, he phoned the police. They immediately responded by putting officers in place for an arrest.
They nabbed the two while they were waiting to receive the balance. After searching them they found a fake police appointment certificate and badge, Zuma said.
The two were charged with common robbery and pretending to be police officers.
It was the fifth arrest on similar charges for one of the men.
