Khartoum - The United Nations' envoy in Khartoum on Monday described the death of Sudanese vice-president John Garang as "a tragedy."
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's representative in Sudan, Jan Pronk, said: "Sudan has lost a great son.
"His death, six months after the signing of the peace agreement that brought an end to the civil war, is a tragedy."
Pronk also urged "all Sudanese people to honour the legacy of Mr Garang by continuing on the path of peace".
He said: "All Sudanese people owe it to Mr Garang to work together to complete the implementation of the comprehensive peace agreement" signed on January 9 in Kenya, ending 21 years of bloody north-south civil war.
Garang died when his plane crashed on Saturday in southern Sudan after taking off from Kampala.
