Brussels - The European Commission on Tuesday called on both presidential candidates in the Democratic Republic of Congo to refrain from further provocation and violence.
Fighting flared between supporters of the DRC's two candidates for a third day as a European Union military force sent reinforcements.
EU development commissioner Louis Michel said: "I appeal to all to show moderation so that the electoral process can continue with the respect for democratic principles.
"The European Commission demands an end to military provocation from both sides."
