Canberra - The kidnapping of Australian freelance photographer Nigel Brennan in Somalia was a "sensitive and difficult case", Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said on Monday.
Media organisations confirmed on Sunday that two foreign journalists, an Australian man and Canadian woman, had been kidnapped near Somalia's capital Mogadishu on Saturday.
Rudd said on Monday that extra Australian diplomats had been sent from South Africa to Nairobi to handle the Brennan case on a consular level.
"This is a sensitive and difficult case but you need to know that we are engaged at every level on this," Rudd told reporters in Canberra.
"We have been actively engaged on this since the news of this kidnapping occurred," he added.
He said Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade officials were helping Brennan's family in Australia.
