Washington - The United States hailed Sudan's new election law that paves the way for the first free ballot in 23 years in the African country, Reuters reported on Tuesday.
The country's parliament approved the measure, which would allow preparations for an election under terms of a 2005 peace deal that ended a north-south civil war and changed the way wealth and power were shared, said reports.
US state department spokesperson Sean McCormack said: "This is an important step in paving the way toward credible and peaceful nationwide elections in 2009."
"We recognise the efforts of all sides to forge a consensus and welcome a similar spirit of partnership as elections preparations move forward in earnest," McCormack added.
