Washington - The Bush administration is sending an additional 73 :000 metric tons of food aid to Southern Africa.
Andrew Natsios, administrator of the United States Agency for International Development, said the contribution of bulgur wheat, cornmeal, sorghum, vegetable oil, peas and beans will sustain approximately five million to six million people for one month.
The food is valued at $51.8m. It will be distributed through the United Nations World Food Programme.
Natsios did not specify the recipient countries.
Poor rainfall in the 2004-2005 growing season reduced harvests in many areas throughout the region, greatly worsening already chronic food shortages.
