Banjul - The African Union agreed on Sunday to a United Nations request to extend the mandate of its military mission in Sudan's violent Darfur region by three months until the end of 2006, said chairperson Denis Sassou Nguesso.
The overstretched AU peacekeeping force had wanted to hand over to the United Nations after its mandate expired on September 30.
However, Sudanese leader Omar Hassan al-Bashir refused to allow UN troops on Sudanese soil.
