Khartoum - The government of Sudan on Sunday formally approved the deployment of 10 000 UN peacekeepers to secure a January peace accord with southern rebels.
A cabinet meeting chaired by President Omar al-Beshir unanimously approved a UN security council resolution passed late last month for the peacekeepers to be deployed, spokesperson Abdel Basit Sabdarat told reporters.
The exact make-up of the force still has to be discussed as the former rebels are wary of countries with close ties to Khartoum being included in the contingent.
The Sudanese government and the former Sudan People's Liberation Movement signed a peace agreement on January 9 that put an end to a 21-year-old civil war that left 1.5 million dead and four million displaced.
