Johannesburg - A Bramley businessman was arrested on Wednesday for his alleged involvement in a scam totalling R1.5mn, Johannesburg police said.
Inspector Moses Maphakela said the 46-year-old owner of a Johannesburg-based meter reading company was nabbed after 54 of his employees laid a fraud charge against him.
The group marched to the Bramley police station on Tuesday claiming they had been defrauded of millions of rand over the past five years.
Maphakela said the employees claimed that since 2004, the company deducted R800 from their monthly salaries claiming it was their pension and insurance contributions.
"But, when the staff requested updates on their contributions from the well-known insurance company, they found that no such payments were made," he said.
Maphakela said in addition, an assault charge was laid against the businessman.
"Subsequently, the suspect will face that charge too," he said.
He was expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court soon.
