Maseru - Lesotho Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili called on Friday the scourges of underdevelopment, poverty, conflict, starvation and diseases such as the HIV/Aids pandemic and malaria the "new evils of colonialism in Africa".
Addressing the Lesotho National Assembly at the end of its Easter recess, Mosisili said: "The new evils of colonialism continue to torment the African continent today.
"This was so despite the fact that the entire continent had gained political independence with the exception of Western Sahara or the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic."
There was a need, therefore, among African countries to combat these evils through unity, he said.
Mosisili said "recognising that with the demise of apartheid the OAU (Organisation of African Unity) had achieved its purpose and the African leadership resolved to change the organisation into the African Union with its major focus the realisation of the goals of African political and economic integration and unity".
