Nouakchott - The head of the junta that has seized power in Mauritania on Saturday promised to hold elections in just over a year, immediately after a referendum on amendments to the northwest African country's constitution, a political leader said.
Colonel Ely Ould Mohamed Vall promised future presidents would only be allowed to serve for two terms, with their duration to be fixed after discussions with political parties, former opposition leader Chbih Ould Melainine told AFP.
He said Vall also said a constitutional clause would prohibit any change of the mandates of future presidents.
