Lagos - A Nigerian man arrested at the Lagos Airport on his way to London had swallowed 1.1kg of a substance thought to be cocaine, wrapped into small packages, media reported on Wednesday.
Mohammed Babatunde Jamiu, 43, was arrested on Monday with the suspected drugs in his stomach. He has since excreted about 100 of the packages, the reports said.
He told journalists shortly after his arrest: "I did it to help my family. I am a family man with two kids."
According to a spokesperson for the drugs law enforcement agency, Ofoyeju Mitchell, Jamiu named a businesswoman as his sponsor. She is now being hunted.
The arrest came the same day as two other people were arrested for drug trafficking at Lagos airport, one on returning with 1.8kg of heroin from India and the other trying to board a flight to Italy.
A Virgin Atlantic flight was grounded by authorities in Lagos for two days last week after Nigerian crew member Mohammed Ibrahim Wudil was allegedly caught with 1.7kg of cocaine.
