Addis Ababa - The African Union suspended the membership of Mauritania on Thursday after a military coup ousted President Maaouiya Ould Taya on Wednesday.
The AU peace and security council, meeting after an emergency summit of African leaders on United Nations reform, said the suspension would remain in place until "constitutional order" was returned to the West African state.
The council said: "In light of the coup d'etat that took place on August 3... Mauritania's participation in all AU activities should be suspended until the restoration of constitutional order in the country."
