DRC cops open fire on students

Lubumbashi - Police opened fire on a student demonstration on Monday in the south-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) city of Lubumbashi, wounding around 10, two of them seriously.
About 1 000 students were taking part in a rally against higher fees outside the offices of the Katanga provincial governor when police fired into the crowd, an AFP journalist said.
Around 10 were wounded, two of them seriously. The injured were taken to a health centre.
The students were protesting against a rise from $100 to $400 in registration fees for the new 2009 - 2010 academic year.
Lubumbashi University has about 35 000 students.
