Eritrea-Ethiopia row continues

New York - The United Nations security council deplored on Monday the lack of progress in resolving the border dispute between Eritrea and Ethiopia, which fought a brief war in the summer of 2000.
A UN-backed boundary commission drew a new border between the two neighbours, but Ethiopia rejected the proposal. Both sides also had failed to implement the commission's recommendations to enhance their ties.
The council, which sent a peacekeeping operation with more than 3 300 troops, military observers and civilians to monitor a ceasefire and the border, said it was deeply concerned by the lack of progress.
The council said there were "possible options" to resolve the stalemate in the peace process, including a visit by council members in the future.
The council heard that there had been shooting incidents in the border area, restrictions placed on movements by UN peacekeepers and an ongoing food shortage in both countries.
