Bloemfontein - Free State rescue workers were still searching on Saturday morning for the bodies of six people who drowned when their boat overturned on the Orange River near the Gariep Dam.
Southern Free State police spokesperson inspector Harry Nagel said the boat overturned at about 18.45 on Friday.
"Eleven people were on the boat busy with a witch doctor ritual when the water-gates were opened," said Nagel.
"The people on the boat were unaware of the gates being opened and the water took the boat down the river."
Two of the 11 people were rescued shortly after the incident and three bodies were recovered.
"The police diving unit were still searching for the other six bodies.
"Further details about the people involved in the incident are not yet available," said Nagel.
He said the two rescued people were taken to Colesberg hospital.
