Kinshasa - The United Nations called on Tuesday for an immediate cease-fire between rival army units fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo and said President Joseph Kabila and his campaign opponent ex-rebel leader Jean-Pierre Bemba must hold talks.
Chief of the 17 500-strong UN peace mission in Congo, William Swing, said: "It is imperative that the fighting ends immediately and that the two candidates in the presidential election meet each other urgently for the well-being of the democratic process and above all for the people of DRC who have already suffered a lot from armed conflict."
