Nouakchott - Police have broken up an anti-government march by beating protesters and launching tear gas into the crowd in Mauritania's capital.
The junta ruling the northwest African country since an Aug. 6 coup says it has banned demonstrations for security reasons.
About 50 people still attempted to go forward with Sunday's protest against the junta government.
An Associated Press reporter saw police respond by using violence to disperse the crowd. No injuries were immediately reported.
The coup leader Gen. Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz has accused the deposed president of corruption and being soft on terrorism.
