Mvurwi - Armed police tried to prevent the US ambassador to Zimbabwe and several other diplomats from leaving a hospital where victims of post-election violence were being treated on Tuesday, an AFP correspondent with the convoy said.
Ambassador James McGee confronted a group of four armed police at the hospital in Mvurwi, about 80km north of Harare, after he and four colleagues tried to tour the wards without prior approval.
After giving up on their efforts to tour the hospital, the diplomats then found their exit blocked by the armed guards and a stand-off lasting around 10 minutes ensued before McGee strode forward and opened the gates himself.
