May I sniff your chip?

Alistair Fairweather

We humans are naturally a lazy bunch. Few of us approach routine chores with much relish. Ironically this instinct to avoid doing the dishes has driven some of our greatest innovations.

Just look at radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags - a technology that promises that we will never need to stand in a supermarket queue ever again.

What are RFID tags? They're tiny electronic circuits that receive and transmit info via radio waves. If that doesn't sound very exciting, then imagine this: you're at a supermarket till with a month's worth of groceries.

The teller presses a button which "asks" your trolley "How much do all these items cost?" Since all the items have RFID tags, they "answer" with their prices. Bingo - you have a total in under a second.

But surely putting transmitters on everything will be expensive? That's part of the genius of RFID - they are already cheap and getting much cheaper. And what if they run out of batteries? No problem - they collect the radio waves from the detector and use that to power their reply.

And RFID tags are much more than just electronic barcodes. The more complex versions can record all kinds of info - everything from where they are (via GPS), to what speed they are travelling, to what other RFID tags or electronic devices they are near.

A somewhat bizarre example of this in action is SNIF Tags - the high-tech dog collar that, and I quote, "expands your circle of friends".

It works like this: your pup, equipped with SNIF collar, meets a similarly equipped furry friend at the park. Both collars automatically record the encounter, and when they both get home, the data is uploaded to the home computer.

Practical uses

Likeminded owners can then choose to become online "friends". They can then arrange group walkies, flea dips and grooming sessions (possibly including their dogs).

I'm not convinced about the commercial merits of such a scheme. "Your dog sniffed my dog's butt - let's get together for snacks!" doesn't really jump off the page.

But there are other, more practical uses, like being alerted when Brutus has jumped the fence again so you can phone your neighbour to apologise.

Jokes aside, RFID really has the potential to change the world utterly. Imagine running a chain of stores and being able to do a countrywide stock take by pushing a single button. "Are the white peasant blouses selling well?" Click. "Yes they are - better order some more from the factory."

And when literally everything we own is tagged, it will be nearly impossible to lose anything. Just grab your detector and ask: "Where is little Johnny?s left shoe?" Of course this begs the question - what happens when you lose the detector? SMS it of course! Now where is that cellphone?

As with any monumental change, introducing RFID will take time. The tags are still too expensive for use in high volume consumer products like milk, and the standards still aren't quite settled. But when the biggest company in the world - Wallmart - throws its weight behind a technology, it's usually a one way bet.

Until then we're going to have to content ourselves with standing in supermarket queues. I tell you one thing though, if I were a supermarket teller I would be blowing up RFID factories as hard as I could go.

I'd really rather not be so easily trackable by anyone everywhere I go. Using them to count up grocery costs is one thing, but I'll leave it at that sort of use.

Always Wong 11/28/2008 12:01:20 PM
I'm all for this, not having to deal with some SFB, unhappy teller is fantastic!!!!

xp 11/28/2008 12:03:22 PM
I have done lots of research on RFID and I can tell you that companies which embrace it make a lot more money than those who don't. Some companies in the US have a real-time visual on what their company is worth. Think about this for a second; YOU DON'T CLOSE THE DAMN SHOP TO DO A STOCK TAKE!! You don't even need tellers in shops, you don't need change for tollroads etc etc. SA must catch a wake up soon

Jayson 11/28/2008 12:19:44 PM
This is actualy an interesting topic ,because i am observing each introduction of the chip for nearly 8 years all across the world. In countries like europe they already use the chip to track down relatives that was kidnapped. The implimentation of the chips is going to happen on a huge scale this is propheciad in the book of revelations(whoever does not have the mark(chip) of the beast won't be able to bye or sell.I can only say that the sign of the end is near.We have to be vigilant

myphotographer 11/28/2008 12:20:52 PM
And when you do not behave exactly how your are meant to behave, click, that's the sound of your chip being turned off, now let's see you try and do anything, start your car, buy groceries, enter your own house. wwwDOTverichipcorpDOTcom wwwDOTmyphotographerDOTcoDOTza

Contrary to popular belief, new identification technologies are far from secure. The encryption used is weak, and in most cases theft can happen with out decrypting the data in any case. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/crime/article4467106.ece - RFID tags would make this hack much easier as one wouldn't need to have access to the card, the hacker would just need to be in a vacinity of the card.

Next step? .... implant them into humans and watch one of the greatest Biblical prophecies come true!!

This is the Mark of the Beast and therefore even through all its positive aspects it will become a way to control and monitor people. Unfortunately the Bible warns us that there will be a time where the Anti-christ forces this onto everyone(Revelations 13:15-18). We are definitly in the last days before the great tribulation and the return of Christ.

and along with the actual chips on the items that you are buying, humans will soon also have their own chips on their foreheads or hands and this will automatically deduct the payment from there. So no chip, no buying or any trading at all. And it is commonly known as the mark of the beast and this time is on us already.

An informative and funny article.Interesting Alistair. We can always trust on you to keep us up to date with the latest trends in Technology.THe RFID wud definately come in handy for most of us with little time & little patience.Gr8 idea.

Passive RFID read accuracy and range (low and high frequency) is shocking when used in a real world retail environment. Your article is pure fantasy in that regard. Active RFID is expensive and seriously environmentally unfriendly [battery disposal]. RFID has been the new 'breakthrough' technology since theearly 90's. Its not going anywhere anytime soon.

ZOMG! Spot on. Just look at Paul's comment. Dude - it's like the coming of Nostradamus - you should predict lottery numbers.

GONNA HAPPEN WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. AND THE PAYMENT OF THE GOODS WILL BE THROUGH YET ANOTHER CHIP WHICH WILL DEDUCT THE PRICE OWING FROM YOUR BANK ACCOUNT CHIP. THIS CHIP WILL BE THE ONLY WAY TRADING CAN AND WILL TAKE PLACE IN FUTURE. IT WILL BE ON YOUR FOREHEAD OR HAND. AND IT IS CALLED THE SIGN OF THE BEAST. 666

Informative and funny.Thanks.We can always trust n you to keep us up to adte with the latest Tech trends. The RFID would be manna from heave for most us who have very little patience.I'd rather spend that time with my husband, especially after a long week.It would make things so much easy.

I'm reading the christian comments about mark of the beast, end of days, Christ is coming. Aren't the christians happy that end of days are upon us? They can be reaped and live their lives playing with harps and harvesting clouds, whatever takes place there. It's not a matter of doom, it's the beginning of a great thing!

Christiaan 11/28/2008 2:23:26 PM
The first RFID chips that were aimed at the shopping trolley application was developed at South Africa's CSIR and was probably demontsrated more than ten years ago. Labour issues etc. prevented it widespread implimentation. Human implantable RFID's are available in this country for so-called medical uses because that is suppose to be the trigger market. We will all have them one day. They will become more sophisticated with complete cellphone and GPS tech build into them. Nowhere to run afterwars

Jayson 11/28/2008 2:26:07 PM
Ignorance is the down fall of many the comment that paul made about playing harps and sitting on clouds just shows his level of ignorance.Paul do research google some pages face to face encounters with Jesus and then make your judgement yourself whether you believe or not it's your choice to stay ignorant

None of us can stop life from happening. If some corporate sees a chance to up production or save money, that's the route they are going! But has anyone considering how many jobs will be lost? Have we seriously become so self-centred that we have no humanity left? Look - I think it's a great invention, especially to find a loved one. But finding a shoe?? Are you that lazy!! Come on, seriously!!!!!

Simon says... As you are entitled to an opinion, I will say it was a very well thought out superficial very much postmedern and pagan opinion. But you are right. Hymns are for people who are christians in the Bible sense of the word. Hypocrites should rather do something else. Why do unbelievers even attempt a christian wedding? your observation is very astute. But you mistake the church for something it is not. It is not the world you live in. So we will keep our hymns and you can sing entimental ballads at your weddings and funerals. God is not honored by flimsy show of pretensious "christians" either. Considering your worldview is postmodern and most probably pagan, not a bad article, but wholly uninformed. Read the article...
