Cautious Kallis shoulders blame

2007-03-27 08:59

Archie Henderson

Some jokes in poor taste over the last few days have again raised the hoary label of chokers to pin on the Proteas.

Except that this team do not deserve such an unimaginative appellation any longer.

The South Africans took on Australia's formidable total of 377 for six last Saturday as if overhauling it would be a mere formality.

Graeme Smith and AB De Villiers set about the task with what seemed to be a relish, scoring at almost eight runs to the over before De Villiers perished to a piece of bad luck.

Yes, Australia's fielding was superb (as was South Africa's) but Shane Watson's throw from the boundary which caught De Villiers stranded was plain good fortune on the part of the Aussies.

Inability

As if one piece of misfortune were not enough, Smith got the cramps. That, sadly for the South Africans, was the ball game.

After that Jacques Kallis tried to break out of his mould, but just could not. It wasn't unwillingness; it was plain inability. Smash and grab is not his style but at least he threw down anchor.

So it was up to Ashwell Prince, a player much like Kallis in his diligence and cautious approach, to take the risks - and the first one he took was his undoing: caught near the fence trying to hook.

With most of the big-hitters gone (Justin Kemp now seems more like a two-inch mortar than a piece of serious batting artillery) and the run rate climbing, the game was over long before it officially ended.

South Africa will obviously learn from this, but they should not give up on their principle of chasing down targets if they are to win more tosses. It would be a sign of weakness to shift strategy now, and for all his other faults, Smith has never been one to blink in the face of a challenge.

Dreamland

Now whether it has been the exciting cricket from the World Cup that has inspired South Africans, or whether it has just been some of the exhilarating stuff dished up in the local 20-overs competition I do not know, but the near-23 000 people who turned up at the Wanderers last Friday night was convincing evidence that the new format is a success.

Just a pity that the Cape Cobras played cowboy cricket from the start and were never able to post a credible total against the Lions, who are led by the best captain never to captain his country (Neil McKenzie for the five of you still in dreamland, like Kallis).

Hi, in your article, you say: "South Africa will obviously learn from this.." I think this is a lesson that should have been learnt years ago. Kallis can no longer be a serious contender for the South Afican squad. He simply does not have the passion and commitment anymore. He may have been the worlds best all rounder at one time, but that certainly is not the case anymore.

    Tyron 3/27/2007 10:33:56 AM
Archie, I fear you and the rest of the Kallis-mockers out there have missed the point. It was not Kallis' fault we lost, nor was it the silly run of AB, luck, or other random event (GS poison is the latest!!) people want to conjure up. The fact is we were chasing 378!!! Our bowlers were pathetic! 4 bowlers bowling the same 125km/h droth over after over! And when we did take a wicket, we gave Ponting and Clarke a few overs to adjust, and then continued to bowl the rubbish!!

    sydney campbell 3/27/2007 10:50:00 AM
Kallis does not get criticized enough for his very selfish approach to cricket. He is unable to read the game and adjust his batting accordingly. His quest for a good average seems to overshadow the interests of the team. Kallis a great batsman? No way!

    André 3/27/2007 10:52:44 AM
Your comments re Kallis is unfair. He still got near 50 with the "long" batting line-up falling all around him. Gibbs, Boucher, Kemp, Pollock, Hall - all failed. The reality is that the ball started swinging as the day ended, and then 8 runs an over become impossible. Why does no one talk of Pollock (83 runs) vs Bracken (40-odd), or the fact that Tait with his speed was the difference (where was Steyn?). So lay off and find the real reasons. It was a great game and Aussie played better.

    Justin 3/27/2007 10:55:54 AM
What was Kallis thinking??Batting as if in a bubble, completely unknowing of what was happening around him...One more point, when Gibbs went out WHY bring in Prince to join Kallis when the run rate was just starting to get out of control? We have plenty of big hitters below him who were never able to get into the game because of the slow batting of our 3 and 5 batsmen...

    Seeking a Captain 3/27/2007 11:02:33 AM
I have the utmost respect for captains like Ricky Ponting and Stephen Fleming!! I can't support Graeme 'gum-chewing' Smith. We need a leader and perhaps McKensie is that.

    Jayce 3/27/2007 11:24:22 AM
Kallis should start playing test matches only, because at the rate the one day game is evolving, he may not be able to adapt quick enough. He's a brilliant player no doubt, he's got a lot more to offer on the Test scene, but I think guys like Stephen Cook and Alviro Petersen should start getting national calls up.These guys can score much quicker than the average player that's in the domestic league.

    Andre Smith 3/27/2007 11:38:01 AM
He is certainly capable of smashing the ball as he has shown in his last few games against Pakistan and so far in the World Cup. The only other thing I can think of is that he plays for himself and not his team. It looks like he decided that the total was insurmountable (right at the beginning) and just tried to stop himself from getting out and adding some runs to his personal tally.

    Hubert Ngqawana 3/27/2007 11:47:52 AM
Kallis is still one of the best in the world of cricket. What was odd was his attitude on the day, especially knowing the importance of the match. As a senior player and vice-captain, he should have risen to the occassion and keep the pressure on the Aussies. Hope we'll meet them later and remove that silly grin from Ponting's face.

    Johny 3/27/2007 11:48:47 AM
I find it strange that the top ranked team goes to the world cup to "learn lessons". Surely, by now every member of the squad should know their roles and how to adapt.

    Peeved 3/27/2007 11:56:25 AM
You all should pick up a bat and go play cricket. Of course you'd have to shed the 30 extra k's first. Not everybody is a big hitter. Kallis has never been. He can only play the way he plays. From the attack point of view. Ntini needs to take the wickets for the rest of the attack to work at all. He needs to do it upfront, to apply pressure. If he can't strike with the ball, he shouldn't open the bowling. I feel no shame in losing to the ausies. They brought us back down to earth.

    Alick 3/27/2007 11:56:40 AM
People who are defending Kallis must be Joking. Kallis will never be the best player in the world until he learns that risk is part of the game. Kallis lost us the game by being too slow. He slept at the wicket while his team mates perished at the other end. Because of his fear of losing his wicket that is why he has never scored a double hundred and yet we say he is the best.Ponting he knows how to vary his game, he can be explosive when the game requires it.Kalls is Cauitious period & not great

    Kondeon 3/27/2007 11:59:18 AM
Kallis can longer play at this level and his unwillingness/inability to improvise his game cost us dearly. We didn't need a wicket-minder when the run-rate was spiraling out of control. He put unnecessary pressure on the other batsmen, thats why we had a collapse twords the end.

    Chris 3/27/2007 12:13:27 PM
I was shocked to see Prince sent in while the RPO was increasing, a real coaching blunder. We can't have Kallis and Prince in the same ODI squad. Our bowling was pedestrian and lacked variety. If we had selected Dale Steyn in place of Langers and Ontong in place of Kemp, we wouldn't have compromised the batting at all while adding variety to the bowling, another pre world cup selection blunder. Ontong is a good bowler, fantastic fielder, a big hitter and fills the quota - but is sitting at home.

    Jack 3/27/2007 12:39:14 PM
The loss wasnt JK's fault. It was down to poor strategy, a 1-dimensional attack and great Aussie batting. Chasing 378 is, in any case, not something that is achieved every day. Some SA fans think because 438 happened once, it should every time. It wont, that was a freakish occasion.

    Rikki 3/27/2007 12:50:05 PM
I do agree with the sentiment that Kallis lacks the ability to adapt to the one day game. I was getting so frustrated watching him on Saturday. He could not clear the inner ring for all the tea in China. Clearly he failed to receive the memo that it was an ODI and not a Test match. Our bowling also needs a MAJOR shake-up if we are to be taken seriously. Matt Hayden, Gilchrist, Ponting etc all had Pollocks number from the first ball he bowled. In this case, his consistency was his downfall.

    KingKong 3/27/2007 12:50:43 PM
Fact: 1. we could't bowl out Holland or Scotland. 2. Aussies scored more runs against us than against Holland and Scotland. Scary!

    Leighton Harris 3/27/2007 1:19:13 PM
Come on people, its just 1 loss. We knew it was going to be a tough game. Pity we didnt finish. We lost because of the following words"Bowling change batsmen, right-arm over." Leighton Harris

    Annoyed 3/27/2007 1:26:05 PM
Thanks for your comments Andr?i. I support what you say about Kallis. He is a brilliant cricketer and should not be the fall guy for SA's loss to Australia. Anybody that has the slightest clue of team work will know that each individual has a role to play not only one person. When a team fails it is because of the lack of everybody's effort not only one person! I suppose it's far easier for people to sit on the side lines and be critical. - Annoyed

    Milton 3/27/2007 1:31:07 PM
Hi Archie. Sa lost because autralia played better cricket on saterday with a bit of luck. The ruu-out by Watson was just awesome. Pitty for Smith`s cramps. I think Sa`s bowler let them down. NO VARIETY!!!!! Kallis batted a bit slow, but i`m sure he learned his leason. I seems that SA dont realise that partnerships win matches. Milton

    Tracy 3/27/2007 1:51:34 PM
Why is it that Graeme Smith has not learnt that he should keep his mouth shut and put all his energy normally expired in press conferences and other impromptu interviews, into the performance on the field! I cringe everytime he boasts about what he and the team will do and when it comes to crunch time, has all the excuses known to man to blame for the performance. Kallis and Prince should stay in the test team and give Loots Bosman a chance - why did he and Petersen go to the West Indies?

    Jakes 3/27/2007 1:59:25 PM
1)No bowling variation:even with the mediocre bunch we have, he should have rotated bowlers every 3-4 overs, and he should have bowled himself as spinner. 2)Why stick with the "12 overs before we rotate the openers" mentality? 3)Not placing the field for the conditions and the bowlers, no attacking field placement A general lack of imagination was shown. Kallis and Pollock should use their place as senior players and suggest changes...but maybe Smith dislikes the challenge?

    James 3/27/2007 2:17:10 PM
I agree totally with"Missed the point" Lack of variety in our bowling has been found out.No spinner,No left arm pace bowler. They all bowl the same stuff.Look at Australia .Bracken,Leftarmer.Hogg left arm wrist spinner etc they are all different.378 runs,we were lucky we wern't chasing 430 +

    Rez 3/27/2007 2:57:51 PM
Where is Paul Harris? Chosen for the test matches, he is South Africa's best spinner by far. With all the fast-medium righ-arm bowlers in the side, he would provide good variation with his slow left arm. SA selectors are too obsessed with players being all rounders. They should pick players on strength. Ignoring quality spinners is a mindset that will continue to hurt the development of the team

    Fordie 3/27/2007 3:33:36 PM
For all those of you who bay for blood when any of our players or coaches fail, put it in perspective! Kallis batted slowly and in all effects cost us the game, however, if our other superstar smashers in 'the best lower order the game has to offer' had come good, we would have been in with a sniff of a win. If Kallis had upped the tempo and got out, we would have lost by 180 runs. He failed in this innings, let it be and comment after he scores a match winning 100 in the final!!!

    Jay 3/27/2007 3:38:39 PM
what about: 1. Why was Kallis sent next.... 2. What has Kemp done in the last year for the Proteas.... 3. Were the strategy option limited....

    Zee 3/27/2007 3:38:57 PM
Our lack of individual adaptability from our bowling suffered at the hands of near patronizing bashing by the Aussie openners. The murmuring about us needing a spinner to bring about different dimension- it's just a post-trauma impulsiveness.Kallis is th best anchor we have, the role of Prince though needs revisitation.
