White faces Saru grilling

2007-06-11 09:50

Johannesburg - Springbok coach Jake White will appear before South African Rugby Union managing director Jonathan Stones on Monday in connection with an incident in which he allegedly verbally abused a journalist, The Star newspaper has reported.

The journalist, Adnaan Mohamed of Die Son, has laid a complaint of assault with police in Johannesburg against Collin Francke, one-time masseur for Mamelodi Sundowns, for allegedly attacking him in a toilet at a News Cafe outlet in Sandton on Thursday.

In his affidavit, Mohamed claims White questioned him about his "negative reporting" of the Springboks and White personally. Later in the evening, Mohamed claims a third party, Francke, who had been sitting at White's table, assaulted him.

Mohamed said he believed Francke's actions were a direct result of White's earlier altercation with him.

"I don't know him at all and had no issues with him."

Stones said on Sunday that Saru would hold an inquiry into the incident.

"We only have a complaint from Mohamed's editor, Andrew Koopman, in which the allegation is that Jake verbally abused Mohamed and that this led to a third party, Francke, assaulting him.

"I will initiate the inquiry on Monday. It is an internal disciplinary matter. As managing director, I am responsible for addressing any disciplinary matters concerning the Springbok coach," he said.

"I will hear both sides of the story. I know Jake is willing to give his version of events, and I hope Mohamed will make himself available. We hope to conclude this matter as soon as possible."

Stones said he still had to decide how many Saru officials would be part of the inquiry.

Stones was not willing to comment on whether White had broken the Springbok code of conduct.

When are people (including the media) going to leave Jake White alone and let him get on with winning us the world cup? GROW UP SOUTH AFRICA!!!

    Joe 6/11/2007 10:33:07 AM
Why dont they just get rid of white and pay him out.He start to get into trouble with SARU like one of the previous Coaches.

    Brad 6/11/2007 10:33:12 AM
We have already seen the plans for SA Rugby, this is just a manouever to get rid of Jake. SA Rugby has forgotten economics, they forget who is supporting rugby. I suggest all South African rugby fans boycott every springbok rugby game untill political interference is removed from rugby. Why pay for something that you don't want. Watch the game on television, or at the PUB -- stay away from the stadiums and let SA Rugby sort out who their market is.

For umpteenth time, Jake White is in being cast in a bad light. The political side of rugby is intent on making a fool of him, yet he is one of SA's most successfull coaches in over a decade. Yes, I do not agree with everything he says, Yes, he might be a bit arrogant at times...but Jake White has built up a Springbok team that actually stand a chance of bringing back the cup, come September. Can't SA Rugby and the Media PLEASE leave him alone for just a few days so he can do his job!!!

    Jacques 6/11/2007 10:49:25 AM
I think all journalist has the right to express themselves. If you read the more established newspapers you`ll find that most of them critize quota selections, whereas "Die Son" express a objective view on the whole Springbok scenario. Jake does not like to be critized, but he likes to use quotas as an excuse/ window dressing.

    Billy 6/11/2007 10:54:13 AM
When will the guy get to just do his job? If he isnt warding off attacks from politicians it journalists!

    Zelda 6/11/2007 11:15:29 AM
Why is it that in our country there is always some sort of negative issue around a sport before a world cup or large event. Can we not just once go into a world cup with positive feelings and not arguing or fighting?

    Philip 6/11/2007 11:22:40 AM
SARU is looking for a reason to get rid of Jake White, After the news Article in the Argus, we must all be assured that this will now be SA's last chance at winning the World Cup.

    Lardus 6/11/2007 11:29:52 AM
I have never really liked Jake White, but it seems that everyone is suddenly against him. The officials, press, well - everyone, seems out to get rid of him, before or after the world cup. I might not like the guy, but still I stand by him and the team. When the cup is over, if White is kept as coach, he will start with a new group of players that would satisfy more 'quotas' to build for the future.Just leave him be until after the cup!!

    gary 6/11/2007 11:32:19 AM
Hier Kom Groot K@k! They had the chance to fire him last year during the end of year tour when they made him fly back during the middle of the tour. I don't like Jake, but it's too late now! We stuck with him till after the world cup!

    Dono 6/11/2007 12:33:41 PM
What a joke. Next thing JW will be held responsible for global warming. Looks like our friends in the media will again be instrumental in shortening a national rugby coach?s tenure. Remember Nick Mallet and the ticket price issue. Media: Thanks for again being used as tool to accomplish an administrator lead coup. All in an effort get rid of a coach that wants to field the best possible side, not a ?politically correct? one

    Stephen 6/11/2007 12:48:51 PM
Whether or not Jake was out of line with his comments to the journalist, is an issue that's entirely separate from the assault. How can Jake be held in any way accountable for Collin Francke's actions? A very sad ploy to make this story remotely newsworthy. Can't we just leave the man alone and let him prepare a competitive Springbok team? Leave the politics aside until after RWC.

    Gary C 6/11/2007 1:13:19 PM
You probably find that the so called reporter that JW is accused of abusing, has been verbally abused worse than that, but because it is JW, he is taking it to a whole new level, just to make name for himself (maybe some people just need to grow up in life). Jake White should leave SA Rugby and go somewhere where he is appreciated, and that Goverment and Attention seekers do not control the fate of sport. "Jake White" all the best.......

    Neil Zulu 6/11/2007 1:13:27 PM
Whether we like Jake White or not!! The Statistics Speak for themselves. Best coach so far cannot change at last minute. Ludicrous! Politic's out of sport!!

    ice 6/11/2007 1:16:00 PM
I'm nog Jake's greatest fan, but just leave the guy alone to do his job! Let him concentrate on coaching his team. . .

    Tooth Fairy 6/11/2007 1:19:49 PM
They got rid of Mallett when he simply commented that test ticket prices may be a bit high. Now they'll probably use this rediculous sad little tabloid story to do the same to Jake White. White needs to concentrate on winning the World Cup, so why not let him! I just wish all these "3rd Force" rugby journos could understand that. South Africa's rugby journalists don't write about rugby and THAT is the actual problem!

    Avril 6/11/2007 1:33:19 PM
I say we leave Jake White alone to do his job. Every Dick, Tom and Harry is trying to get their penny's worth of publicity by whining about everything he does. Leave the drama to Paris Hilton fans and enemies. Grow up guys, especially you journalists that can't take what you give.
