Radical changes for Boks?

2007-06-09 10:58

Johannesburg - Radical changes are set to sweep through South African rugby following the World Cup in France later this year.

According to a report in the Johannesburg Saturday Star newspaper, the first Springbok team of 2008 will consist of at least 10 black and coloured players.

National coach Jake White will also be replaced by the country's first black Springbok coach - Peter de Villiers - and the side is set to be captained by Luke Watson.

Watson, the 23-year-old Western Stormers captain, was recently included in the Springbok training squad at the insistence of South African Rugby Union president Oregan Hoskins, his deputy Mike Stofile and chairperson of the Board of SA Rugby Mpumelelo Tshume.

Watson was due to make his international debut for the Springboks against Samoa at Ellis Park on Saturday.

The openside flanker is the son of former anti-apartheid activist Cheeky Watson, who still has close ties with the ANC.

The Watson family are also closely associated with Zola Yeye, the Springbok team manager.

Unhappy with slow tranformation

Rugby bosses in South Africa are unhappy with the slow rate of transformation and, according to the Saturday Star, believe the only way to "Africanise" a sport which has been dominated by the minority white population for over 100 years is to take radical steps.

Watson, South Africa's Super 14 player in 2006, has often been regarded as a future national rugby captain after leading the South African Schools team, the SA Under-19 and SA Under-21 teams.

However, he has always been overlooked by White and his co-Springbok selectors. White has maintained the Stormers flanker, at 1,84m tall and weighing 97kg, is too small for international rugby. He also, according to White, doesn't offer him an option in the lineouts.

De Villiers, a former Currie Cup coach with the East Rand-based Falcons and Mighty Elephants from the Eastern Cape, is currently in charge of the Emerging Springboks side who are playing in a tournament in Romania. He also coached the SA U-21 team, which won the world title in 2005.

"I have no problem with the transformation requirements", De Villiers told the Saturday Star.

"My record at U-19, U-21 and provincial level speaks for itself. Other coaches pick black players in their squad, but don't play them. That's where I am different. I pick the players and play them", said De Villiers.

He added he would meet the requirements of 10 black players in a Springbok team. "There will be pain (in the results) but it is something we must go through to transform the team. It would be an honour for me to coach the Boks", he told the Saturday Star.

Furthermore, De Villiers said Watson would be his obvious choice to lead the side.

"Luke was my captain with the U-21s. He would be my first name on the team sheet he's inspirational, dynamic and a great player."

The Bok side to face Samoa Saturday includes five black players - JP Pietersen, Ashwin Willemse, Waylon Murray, Wayne Julies and Ricky Januarie.

Neither Hoskins nor Stofile - the country's top rugby brass - were immediately available for comment.

Okay seriously - I'm all for transformation, but why are we still relying on the quota system to fill the sides when we have ENOUGH talented black players to completely renounce the system? Why 10 black players now? Surely this is discrimination against white players! We have to stop awarding places because of skin color and start awardin on merit. JP, Waylon, Habana et al DESERVE their places; don't make them think they're there because they're black. It's silly.

ghert 6/9/2007 11:13:54 AM
my my, there goes Bok rugby. Looks like after the world cup I will have to support the local bowls club. Just pick the guys on merit! How diffucult can it be? Your just going to repeat the same mistakes over again.

luke 6/9/2007 11:29:53 AM
This is pathetic,we must be the only country in the world that does this, does this mean that our government will now have 7 white players in the national soccer team,I doubt it very much. This is exactly what this country is about at the moment, double standards. No one supports a loosing side black or white.

Bruce Jenkins 6/9/2007 11:30:20 AM
A simple message to all those clamouring for Springbok transformation. A national team in any country and any sport should be chosen from the best available citizens of that country. The success of such a team brings honour and prestige to the whole country and all citizens. All true South Africans should find the policy of transformation/quota system as abhorrent as apartheid was. Be bold my fellow countrymen and become colour blind. Choose only on ability and no other criteria.

Why would u want to change something that have worked for 100 years. This is a racist movement and is going to destroy the SA rugby. I am a big rugby supporter, but if this happens I will be so discousted with my nation and have to find some other form of rugby to support, because then this will not be rugby.

Johan Vos 6/9/2007 11:37:35 AM
Please change the emblem and the name!!! I will never support South Africa rugby again and to humiliate the proud of the Springboks like that - well theres no words just the world to see how much idiots there are in South Africa. Luke Watson is not good enough to play for the Boks ahead of Schalk Burger. And that is it. Fare well my beloved Springboks. How the world is laughing at the stupid black politicians in or country. It seems to to me that this goverment is trying its utmost to transform the boks into another bafana bafana (total losers). But at least they will be black.

Meiring du Plessis 6/9/2007 11:40:17 AM
This is serious sh*t. Don?t be surprised if just about all the current Bok?s depart for greener pastures i.e. UK, France, Aussie etc. I am of the honest opinion that the directorship of Rugby are on some sort of drug or smoking grass in the board room. Catch a wake-up you idiots??

JL 6/9/2007 11:40:34 AM
why not make it all black? Get done with it once and for all - if they win it will be gr8 - if they loose we will have to see who will support them including sponsorships. Perhaps the Afrikaner need this - then they can focus on real and serious issues

byall 6/9/2007 11:42:03 AM
Could see this comming a mile off, Ok, who is gonna boycot all the games with me. Will be good to see them supported by only 10 spectators, the reserves and coaching staff.

Michael 6/9/2007 11:49:00 AM
Seriously, this is enough. Im not afrikaans, and I dont watch Rugby, but bugger these black hypocrites. Im leaving this god for saken country. This was the final straw.

JV 6/9/2007 11:55:52 AM
It will be sad if this system gets implemented, but we should actually blame the Provincial coaches. They never give black players a fair opportunity on provincial and Super 14 levels. This problem should be addressed on provincial level and all players should be selected on merit for the national side.Unfortunately our black (African, coulored, Indian) players are not being treated fairly, especially when looking at the amount of black players who perform at national age group levels.

Stuart Elliott 6/9/2007 12:06:19 PM
If the government wants to see more black players in the Springbok squad then they should spend money and time developing and increasing the profile of rugby to the majority. This would be welcomed by all as it would improve South African rugby by giving it a large pool of players to draw from and better trained players as well. While representation will be slower at least rugby won't be ruined by a string of below par performances. Winning is vital to keeping SA rugby alive.

Gareth Martin 6/9/2007 12:09:31 PM
So when is the same thing going to happen to Bafana Bafana? I think that we should get a quota system going for them. 7 white guys have to be in the team for the World Cup...why?? Well because it's been a Black African dominated sport in South Africa for years. I don't ever see white South Africans complaining that we need to equal numbers up for the national Soccer team. Let's just hope that this is someone trying to make a story out of nothing....

Ed 6/9/2007 12:19:03 PM
What absolute idiots.....Another great institution driven into the ground. And what will it achieve? Definately not a unified country behind a proud team picked on 'merit'.

LEE 6/9/2007 12:20:51 PM
What is the problem with all these administrators. Surely every South African would want a team that is going to win for them. If Oregan or Jake for that matter can tell me that those players picked are the best in South Africa, i would be happy, irrespective whether they are white or black, due to the fact that they are representing me!!!!

Brendon 6/9/2007 12:34:20 PM
I can assure all that current bok rugby supporters will not attend any bok games in future if that is the case. We as supporters will never accept a political-select team. We only want the best players and we want to win! If a team is selected on anything than merits....well, mark my words. Rugby SA will most certainly have empty staduims. I will never support a political -selected sport team in SA. Brendon Venter

Brad 6/9/2007 12:59:03 PM
I hope the players themselves will take a stance against this "transformation". I myself will not support SA rugby if this happens and will consider leaving this racist country.

eston 6/9/2007 1:05:00 PM
the world is not laughing at us for transforming our national rugby team they applaud us.everyone says we should select the best team, but when this is done they jump and cry foul.it is clear a lot of those players currently in the bok team should not be there as they are not the best, when they should be replaced by a player of colour it is so wrong.many of us south africans are not pro bok because rugby is not transformed, therefore we applaud sarfu president for his intervention.

Eelke 6/9/2007 1:23:42 PM
The rugby fraternity has only itself to blame for selecting political figures like O. Hoskins and B. van Rooyen in top positions. The non-ANC factions should stand together as anti-ANC to rid the institutions of politics. Rugby (and other sports) should belong to the citizens that play it and not the ruling party.

Eric 6/9/2007 1:28:52 PM
I could see this coming. It shows the extent to which our rugby has become a political tool. I for one, will support the Boks irrespective of colour, IF they are the best 15 players available. However, when it is forced down my throat, that players of certain cultural, religious, or ethnic groups are going to be chosen first, simply to fulfill a "quota", I for one, will not be attending any future international fixtures, and call on all others to do the same.

JP 6/9/2007 1:39:52 PM
We (boys) all use to dream about wearing the green and gold, but if that package includes dealing with all this crap that dream will and is dying. Sports and politics are two seperate things and should stay that way. The politics are sucking the life out of our youth and killing the dreams heroes are made of.
