'Show the Bulls some respect'

2006-10-19 10:46

JJ Harmse

Isn't it strange how we often try to look beyond the obvious?

The Currie Cup season was like that for me. I can't tell you how many times I opened newspapers and just smiled to myself. In short, rugby fans outside Pretoria refuse to admit that the Bulls are the best rugby team in the country by a mile. If not more.

People looked at Gio Aplon's moments of brilliance and assumed that Western Province were playing a new brand of rugby and scoring tries at will. They looked at the Cheetahs and their addiction to disco lights and thought it was the way forward and what a genius Rassie was.

Yes, Aplon was good and Rassie's a very good coach, but that is not where the answers for South African rugby lie. That magical answer is to be found in the way one province has managed to dominate the domestic scene.

The reality is that only one union in South African rugby can claim to have a blue print that actually works.

And like it or not, that union is the Blue Bulls.

It is no secret in South African rugby circles that the Bulls are not well liked. They are seen as arrogant, their crowds are seen as boorish and their style of play is labelled as one-dimensional.

What a sad life those people lead! Facts do not lie and facts alone will tell you how successful the Blue Bulls have been this decade. And like it or not, unless you support the Bulls, the province you follow is not even close.

Five consecutive finals, two consecutive Super Rugby semi-finals, and more impressive, five consecutive titles at Under-21, Under-20 and Under-19 levels. The Blue Bulls union has scooped all of the titles available for five years in a row.

Their Currie Cup record reads as follows. Semi-finals: Played five, won five. Finals: Played five, won three, drawn one, lost one.

How many Currie Cup finals have Western Province made in the past five years? Zero. How many finals have the Sharks made? Two. How many have the Lions made? One.

The Cheetahs have proved to be the only other consistent side, also making five semi-finals in a row, winning one final, losing one and drawing one. Their first Super 14 season proved to be a bit of a disaster however and they have only produced a sprinkling of new Springboks.

At least Rassie Erasmus is not shy to admit that he respects the Bulls for what they have achieved so far. So should his fans and the rest of South Africa, for that matter.

The Bulls had 10 players in the Springbok team that beat the All Blacks and Australia during the Tri-Nations this year. Three of those are black. What other province can claim that? Not bad for a province that is supposedly racist at heart or against transformation, as some will make you believe. Yes, Lobberts (selected to tour with the Springboks at the end of the year) and Ndungane are not from Pretoria, but were given a chance to prosper and develop into world class players when nobody else cared.

They were not imported from Fiji or Australia to play wing or hooker or drafted in from Dunedin via Japan.

The victorious Under-19 side had up to 11 players of colour in the side during any given game this year and only two of the seven national representatives at this age group were white.

The Bulls produced nine players for the Under-21 side that played in the World Cup final in France, with Chiliboy Ralepelle the captain. Four of them were black.

The Blue Bulls Academy has 21 junior players on their books. Fifteen of those played at national level this year.

I am not even going into the dominance of the women's team in national competitions or the victory of the amateur side in their final. The Bulls women team will beat the national side if they were to play them, but that is more to do with SA Rugby's useless selection policy in women's rugby than anything else. How can you have a quota system in a sport that was established only five years ago?

But back to the realities of professional rugby.

I am not asking anyone to become a Bulls fan. I am just asking all of you to look at the facts. Take an honest look at what was achieved in Pretoria over the past five years. Look at the success achieved at every level and give me one good reason why the rest of South African rugby should not take a leaf out of the Bulls' book.

Tell me why Rassie Erasmus or Dick Muir are better options than Heyneke Meyer as a possible future Springbok coach.

No if's and but's. Just acknowledge what the facts show. See what you are supposed to see. You can continue hating their guts, their horns or whatever you detest, but they also deserve your respect, even if it is just for a brief moment. Denial is one thing, disrespect is another. Do not be guilty of both.

Ah... The favorite pass time of all bulls suporters, pointing out statistics. One of the first things one learns in life is that statistics lie. May I also point out the amount of yellow cards the bulls got? Also, the bulls have more then double the money that any other SA rugby union has. Before they got rich with 5 years back (when they started winning again) they were almost bankrupt. Do some real research before writing rubbish.

    frik 10/19/2006 12:11:53 PM
I agree and in the final they showed some good character as well as to not take the kick for a win.Personally i think jake white wont pull it off in the world cup.His selected squad is not the best potential squad that we have and his techniques have proven to only be slightly successful against the all blacks and ausies which are a good indication of our readyness for the world cup.Personally I think Heyneke Meyer as coach and Naas Botha as assistant coach will be the best combo for SA.

    Gary 10/19/2006 12:12:30 PM
They deserve respect for their achievement for that there is no doubt. I wish the brand of rugby they played though did not involve the continued off the ball tactics that are blattantly obvious in all their games. These players think it is acceptable and bring that into the Bok team. Refs in international's will not tolerate it and the rest of the world is tired of paying to watch it as it is a negative thug mentality to win games.

    adam 10/19/2006 12:19:11 PM
oh please! spare us the groveling. you are clearly delusional. the bulls suck! fair enough they're winning titles, but only because of match-fixing by certain players and referees. watch the final between cheetahs and bulls again. watch closely and you'll see how the match was controlled in such a way to allow the bulls to catch up to cheetahs and accept the draw. cheetahs were by a good margain the better team. the result: a draw. the reaction:cheetahs - disappointed, bulls - delighted. nuff said

    Terence 10/19/2006 12:25:51 PM
Respect is earned by playing the ball... Not by being so focused on hurting players that you stomp on your own players in the process.

    Robin 10/19/2006 12:53:28 PM
Brilliant article!!! Nobody can argue angainst facts like these. The rest of SA hate the Bulls because they envy the success they have had. Long my the Bulls reign last!!!

    Hans 10/19/2006 1:03:20 PM
Good effort there, but I am afraid the Cheetahs are still the best, since they retained the Currie Cup. And where do you get the idea that nobody respects the Bulls? Unfortunately after this insulting commentary, I respect them a little less now. And I imaging many South Africans will pretty much hate you and them. Please wake up!

    Nicolaas 10/19/2006 1:11:25 PM
Well said JJ, I have to agree. As a lifelong Bull supporter I have grown weary of some people disliking my team in ways, which go way beyond normal rivalries. It has become a norm that you?re either support the Bulls or anyone against them, no matter who they might be, as long as they?re not the Bulls. So? as JJ says, look at the stats and shut up.

    robert 10/19/2006 1:20:58 PM
I assume Mr Harmse is probably a blue bull supporter himself....the bias is obvious. I have to admit and agree that you are correct sir, the bulls on the record at the moment are a successful team. We must also look why? Due to this good performance record over the last 3 years they are also the strongest union financially. They are scouting and buying as much as they can. These days a province is not made up of local talent anymore but it is a mash of players from around the country.

    robert 10/19/2006 1:23:50 PM
Who can ever forget a few years ago in the super 12, it was called: ``Die Super 11 en die Blou Bulle`` as they were dead last on the log. If the Lions just played better for one game this currie cup, the Bulls may have found themselves out of the semis as well!! What about the SA rugby awards nominees...why so few bulls???I rest my case...and they didnt even win the cup..they shared it.

    What the. 10/19/2006 1:27:52 PM
JJ, you are guilty of very one-sided reporting. Your Sprinbok teams & ratings are always littered with Bulls players. This reduces the credibility of all your articles.

    Lambleg 10/19/2006 1:34:11 PM
Like all true South Africans JJ Harmse is only looking at the domestic scene. Lets cast the net a little wider....were have the Bulls been in Super rugby - thrashed! Lets loose the South African mentality and realise that a team who is really world class, needs to be able to beat international competion (which they have failed to do), needs to be able to win at and away from home (which they have failed to do).Simply put - I would rather come last in the Currie Cup and win the S14 than vice versa

    frank joubert 10/19/2006 1:36:12 PM
What a load of hogwash - tell me how many of the bulls players were born in pretori, or even north of the jukskei river.

    jan 10/19/2006 1:36:31 PM
Spot on. Couldn't have said it better myself.

    Mark 10/19/2006 2:00:45 PM
JJ, I live in Pretoria, so not only do I see the Bulls play, I also see the attitude of their supporters. Your words sum it up quite nicely: "arrogant, boorish and one-dimensional". For my part, I support any team BUT the Blue Bulls.

    Andre 10/19/2006 2:00:57 PM
All the other teams are jealous. The Bulls can be arrogant cause they play the best rugby at the moment. The CC final was a fair draw and both teams deserve the draw. Ja the Bulls was last in the S12, what about the last two years they are semi-finalists. Thats a sign that the Bulls are going up and up. Yes they transfer players coz everbody wants to play for the best team!. Blue Bulls!!!!. Robert speak for yourself look at WP, buying a Fidji guy, buying players at the middle of the season.

    Nielen 10/19/2006 2:13:54 PM
I see A LOT of emotional responses from both Bull supporters and the Non-Bull Supporters (I think they can start their own supporters club by now!). I believe this is the point JJ is trying to make. For a moment or two, forget your personal views about the team, and look at the facts. On a positive note... BIG CHEERS to all the Cheetahs supporters in Bloemfontein! We had an amazing weekend who welcomed us Bulls supporters with loads of camaraderie (and beers!) Can?t wait for the next Bulls game in Bloem!

    Jaco 10/19/2006 2:33:19 PM
Yes this great team almost missed the semi's. I wonder if Mr.Harmse would have written the same article 10 years ago about the team that then rulled the local scene! Mr Harmse let me ask you if it is good taht the bulls buy all the better players in RSA and make them sit on the bench week in and week out. Is this fair towards other poorer unions that cannot afford these salaries that the bulls offer. Why do you write a article about that and stop being one eyed!!

    Oranje Orakel 10/19/2006 2:35:33 PM
JJ The average Cheetah Supporter do respect the Bulls Rugby Union and their structures. A good example was the past match in Bloem- which might be a watershed in the way that the Bulls "respect- or disrespect" the Cheetahs. I have the utmost respect for Stephan Pretorius and have reserved respect for Heyneke Meyer. What should however be looked at- some other facts Are the Bulls being trained to play- outside the Rules of the Game?

    Kevin Sizer 10/19/2006 2:44:49 PM
The Blue Bulls have a recent record and set of silverware to be proud of. The Blue Bulls have a management team, infrastructure and squad of players that are an example to the rest of South Africa. The Blue Bulls, players and management have also created their own press and public image. If it's bad, fix it. If you like it wear it along with the silverware.

    Francois 10/19/2006 3:04:30 PM
It's a pity people can not be proud off a South African team performing so consistantly well as the Bulls have done for the last five years. Yes Lambleg, they haven't won a Super rugby title, yet, has any other SA team? No! The culture being grown in Pretoria is a winning one and the sooner the other unions take a leaf from the Bulls book, the better for SA Rugby in general. I'm a Sharks supporter and I wish we could play as consistantly good as the Bulls!

    Marnus 10/19/2006 3:04:32 PM
How convenient of all you non-bulls supporters to forget that Bakkies Botha,Bryan Habana, Wynand Olivier would NOT leave the Bulls camp, for alot more money than they earn at the Bulls. Why? Because the Bulls camp is about more than just money!

    Tjaart 10/19/2006 3:32:06 PM
I am a lions fan,but have always respected the Bulls. Until this year that is. I have never seen any team play so dirty in a Curriecup final, or any game that is. they did not go out to win, they went out to end the Cheeta's careers.

    Roelof 10/19/2006 3:54:19 PM
JJ,do not argue with fools, people watching may not know the difference.......

    Lime 10/19/2006 3:57:39 PM
I think it would be wrong to start calling for Heyneke as the next bok coach, when you considder that altough the bulls have dominated the domestic scene, they have failed misrebly in the Super 14 against New Zealand teams.

    jaja 10/19/2006 4:21:42 PM
Whatever! Bias? Surely not hey! Shrks for Boks, Rassie for coach!

    Neil 10/19/2006 4:22:52 PM
I find it very funny that the non bulls supporters state facts about games that have been played while all the bulls supporters do is comment on how 'sad' non bulls are. To all the bulls supporters out there, it is time to grow up. You are not in school anymore. I remember the newspapers last year about a Cheetahs supporter that was tied behind a truck and draged through the streets of Hatfield. Is that really how the bulls and there supporters want to be seen?

    Gavin Fernie 10/19/2006 4:51:42 PM
As JJ says,"Arrogant, crowds boorish,one-dimensional !" JJ forgot," boring, thuggish ,not so hot against overseas teams " How many Blue Bullies in the team that got thrashed 0-49? How many home grown bullies in squad ? Why doesn't this magic formula translate into a competitive national team against top teams ? Oh dear,JJ, jy jok!

    Koos 10/19/2006 4:59:12 PM
Dear Mr Harmse, Thanks for this inspiring lesson on Blue Bulls rugby. But seriously who cares - If you have to go through all this trouble to have to write an article about this issue, then there is something wrong with Blue Bulls supporters. My hat of to "your" team and their achievements. They do appreciate it. Now go have a party and celebrate it. Do not push it down our throats.

    Ali 10/19/2006 5:07:05 PM
Worst story ever read. Money has to do with it big. Dont start hailing the Bulls as solving SA's rugby problems. Only reason they have good black players in the Bok squad is because they stole them. Habana, Ndangane are not from there. They just had the money to buy them. Habana was selected for the Boks before he was a bull so please do some needed research before splattering nonsense stories on the web.

    Niel 10/19/2006 5:22:35 PM
Can you please send me some of the stuff you're smoking mate? Start performing outside South Africa before you start demanding respect.

    John 10/19/2006 5:26:29 PM
All this talk of Bulls and dirty play and bad attitudes and arrogance... Let me say this: Is there a player in SA rugby more arrogant than Phillip Burger from the cheetahs? Not even the Bloem people like him. Talk about a stinking attitude - Bolla Conradie from province, he is all over the show but never in the game! Did you see him screaming at his forwards in the semi against the Bulls? Dirty play - Butch James from the sharks... Attitudes are everywhere, not only at Loftus!

    Peter Britz 10/19/2006 5:35:40 PM
The Bull's are undeniably a successfull union, but let's add a bit of perspective. Respect is earned not, demanded. respect also comes from humility, giving some respect, and also playing within the acceptable norms of hard rugby, instead of blatant thuggery! now to your claim. The Cheetah's as you point out have been consistent, here is where you are losing perspective. It is relatively easy to achieve success, with an almost unlimited budget, the cheetah's have achieved sucess with less
