Going Dutch in Rotterdam

2008-01-31 08:39

Kgomotso Matsunyane

If you're going to be flying KLM anytime soon, you better pack your own scuff tin. We left Jozi at 23:30, were fed tomato soup and salad an hour and a half later (starter portions with no bread), and the next time we saw anything that resembled food was 10 hours into the flight.

I ate those bland eggs, tough sausage and a stale bun like my very life depended on it! As soon as we cleared customs I literally ran to Burger King and had the most delicious, juiciest "whopper" burger ever to be made.

I'm attending the Rotterdam Film Festival, an hour from Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Film festivals are like summer camp for adults. You wake up early for a gruelling day of workshops, interviews and pitching sessions, usually followed by a cocktail session for schmoozing purposes, and a dance party that goes on late into the night, and of course in between watching copious amounts of film. I know, my life is rough, but somebody's got to do it.

As a city Rotterdam is adorable - beautiful and historic buildings, a very laid back lifestyle, and tons of public transport (trams, trains, buses and taxis). The streets are relatively clean, but the rivers are full of plastic bags, which are always an eye sore.

The quality of life is truly outstanding here, even for European standards, and I feel slightly guilty for enjoying the 24-hour, uninterrupted electricity supply. The best part of course is the ability to walk everywhere, day or night, and where a car is quite unnecessary if you don't fancy one.

I'm somewhat relieved to see Dutch TV also suffers from too much cheap American programming, like re-runs of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and even Dr Phil - all subtitled into Dutch.

Note to self: in my next life I must invest in a long running production that sells to almost every territory in the world. Can you spell cha-ching? The truth is, I work in an unforgiving and fickle industry where you're only as good as your last film or TV production, and where the chances of success are almost comparable to winning the lotto.

Smoke gets in the eyes

I'm a great believer that if you travel, you have to allow yourself the full experience of the new environment, you know, when in Rome, blah blah, so of course we walk into a couple of the (in)famous Dutch coffee shops, where marijuana, hash and coffee are sold legally over the counter.

They tend to be patronised primarily by men in their twenties and thirties, and by giggly and curious international types tickled pink by the concept of legalised drugs. I know what you want to know, and yes damnit I did inhale, and loved every minute of it.

It also just happens to be the day Bafana is slaughtered by Tunisia, and we leave the establishment depressed but not entirely surprised. We kill the resulting munchies with a huge dinner of the best Chinese food I've ever had.

Overall, Rotterdam gets a solid 8 out of 10. There's not one city in the world that is perfect, and Rotterdam has its fair share of crime. But here's why I could live here: you're not always looking behind your back to see if someone wants to rape you or grab your laptop from you, and being killed for a stupid cell phone is a concept that seems like a terrible horror movie pitch, as opposed to being the daily reality South Africans have to contend with.

Just for comparison's sake, what would you give Jhb, or Cpt or London for that matter? I would love to know.

Micky 1/31/2008 9:05:55 AM
You will feel safe walking around anywhere so long as it is not in Africa. Try Hong Kong, Dubai, New York, Madrid, Taipei, Santiago in Chile - you can walk freely at night. I would not dare to walk around Jhb or Cape Town at night - feel uneasy enough during the day. And as for the pot - always good to try out what the locals do - cannot be a bad as the tik scurge we have in the Cape.

Benzo 1/31/2008 9:06:33 AM
Pleased to hear that you enjoyed my home city! It took decades to repair the damage of 1940 when the city was bombed and to restore some of the old buildings that could be saved. I visited a month ago and the city is still vibrant as ever and -indeed- one feels not threatened.

Raider 1/31/2008 9:09:18 AM
Damn... was in Amsterdam in November... can't to go back there in the summer! beautiful city!

Anonymous 1/31/2008 9:14:29 AM
Nice one news24 - lets just tell our youth that the use of Marijuana is OK - drugs is drugs...

ambassador 1/31/2008 9:15:53 AM
A courtesy visit to meet our staff would have been nice....good reality test

Tavengwa 1/31/2008 9:38:07 AM
I expected to hear that they also served you oranges. You should have gone to the Red Light District.BUT Psychology says that if man are allowed to do all experiments,it reduces curiosity and hence crime related arrests.Imagine how many people would be arrested over dagga & casual sex if there was no place to do openly in Nederlands. But in SA it is a question of Economic Imbalances and social strata.I can smell the BLISS you felt !

Yawn 1/31/2008 9:49:43 AM
Sounds like heaven on Earth. Can you imagine not fearing for your life at every moment because you dare have a cellphone with you? It's a sad day when we equate our cities to a war zone. You say there's crime there? You're talking about petty theft and pickpocketing right? I think the South African meaning of that word has changed so horribly that any sane person would wonder how we still cope with it.

J.O 1/31/2008 9:54:34 AM
Munchies BEFORE you got to Amsterdam??? That has to be a first! :-)

marius 1/31/2008 9:57:29 AM
I lived in Haarlem and would say 8/10 for the whole of Netherlands. Imagine all the people who want to do good in South Africa move to a city like i.e. Port Elizabeth, invest all our resources and ideas into it and change it into such a place?

Point Blank 1/31/2008 10:03:00 AM
I'm so jealous of the fact they can smoke legally there!!

Godfrey 1/31/2008 10:06:41 AM
Can't picture a beautiful girl like u 'inhaling',I hope you exhaled afterwards! On a seriuos tone i dream of the day when in this country we will all be able to walk the streets without fear of crime. My biggest worry right now is not Eskom but the crime that is destroying this beautiful country, next time u go there again take me with u and leave me there!

Nicky 1/31/2008 10:11:57 AM
Nicely written article Kgomotso. I feel the need to say that perhaps there is greener grass over the hill but then I may be hit with a 10 pound hammer by some of our patriotic maniacs, so be that as it may, I enjoyed imagining what it must be like not to have to look over your shoulder. Glad to hear you enjoyed your taste of the "illegal". As you said, when in Rome.......

schalie 1/31/2008 10:13:54 AM
"There's not one city in the world that is perfect". Well said, and thanks for a good article.

Agreed.... 1/31/2008 10:21:52 AM
I enjoyed reading your column. It only brings back good memories of Rotterdam. It is beautiful and I so agree wit you regarding the transport. It just works, and the different cultures there are just amazing. Def a place to go see...

Grant 1/31/2008 10:22:29 AM
I lived in Rotterdam for just short of a year - it's great when the weather is good, but miserable when it's snowing or raining... there is very little history in Rotterdam because it's all so new (the city was levelled during WW2), so don't go looking for any history ! It is a great place, and the Dutch are a pretty cool nation !

Villian 1/31/2008 10:36:51 AM
Spent a couple of days in Rotterdam in 2005, fantastic city, also much much cheaper than Amsterdam, with the same sort of attractions ie "coffee shops". Would go back in a heart beat!!

cedb00 1/31/2008 10:51:48 AM
It's a nice city because it is well managed, and because prostitution and marijuana is legal, the police can concentrate all their efforts and resources to keep real crime and real criminals at bay!

TheOne 1/31/2008 10:58:42 AM
So Rotterdam has "its fair share of crime" ... Just wanna know what types of crime are prevalent or common there for which you don't have to look behind your back? Just curious!

Cobus 1/31/2008 11:07:37 AM
It is not difficult to understand why SA is bleeding. Once SA travellers experience the freedom on the streets where parliament argues about the colour of the paint on historic buildings, instead of racial bickering all day, they have to immigrate. The crime problem in SA will never be resolved if you have a third world criminal and a first world judiciary.

Tshepo 1/31/2008 11:17:25 AM
I flow from London to Amsterdam via KLM.It wasn't that bad,but considering it was a 50min flight i couldn't get much.Yes we all know why a 22yr old boy and his friends get up to in the redlight district,i mean Amsterdam.I still reckon it's more for guys than girls...

SMG 1/31/2008 11:20:27 AM
I always enjoy your articles, this one just made me want to go visit Amsterdam. Thanks!

Helpus 1/31/2008 11:28:35 AM
I quite enjoyed your article. Been there a year or two ago and have to agree with everything you said about a beautiful and friendly city. Yes, unfortunately the crime thing will probably hunt us for years to come, and will do our lovely country immeasurable economical damage.

anon 1/31/2008 11:36:28 AM
good article, just makes me jealous that I hav'nt been there. The coffee shops must be amazing would rather have a cookie or a reefer than alcohol to drink myself drunk, puke on my own shoes and then cause an accident.Cannibas sativa is a herb and you cannot OD on it, alcohol on the otherhand is a poison and you can definitly OD on it.

Tavengwa 1/31/2008 12:01:09 PM
When are you coming to Mamelodi East for a weekend.I wish to hear you in Mams.I enjoy a weekend in Lusaka.Going real awry township.Just come and see...wen have almost many of the things you said happening on our streets every weekend.Did you see the new Mahube Valley Shopping Mall...oh girl..just sirene and charming sitting at the bossom of some baldy Cullinan Hills..crisp smart, new for now...meet you there !

Chris Pieters 1/31/2008 12:02:02 PM
As per normal another very good article. It is a pity that I will probably never in my lifetime experience walking the streets in any of the towns in our country at night without fear of getting killed. Can someone not try and get one of these barbarians that kill people for a cell phone to explain what goes through your mind when he commits such a bastardly act.

Eddie 1/31/2008 12:15:44 PM
I really want to congratulate you on your article. Although I haven't been there myself, reading your article was like watching the video. Well done K!!

Peter Thompson 1/31/2008 12:19:01 PM
I have been in Amsterdam for 2 and a half months and have not seen any violence of any kind! Walk around at 2 in the morning through the narrow streets without a care in the world!! Amazing! Asked a Amsterdamer what the crime is like, he replied "Shocking!". "Why?" ask I. The answer was the Horrifying number of Bicycle thefts in the city!! If only SA was that way..Heaven, can you imagine?
