A tough marketing tool

2009-01-05 08:40

Chris Moerdyk

It has taken a while, but SA cricket captain Graeme Smith, has finally discovered one of the world's most powerful communications tools that leaves the competition dumbstruck.

It's called humility.

And hopefully, our politicians and business leaders will, like Smith, also come to the conclusion that in these radically changed times, humility has replaced grandstanding, aggression, confrontation and even slick salesmanship as the best way of staying ahead of the competition.

The past year has seen an acceleration in the way consumers all over the world have changed in terms of their attitude toward politics and businesses.

Most importantly in the way they respond to communication. Not too long ago consumers used to react positively when a politician said, "trust me" and when business said, "we care".

Effective communication

But, nowadays voters feel more let down by politicians than ever before and thanks to the current dramatic economic downturn globally and corporate greed being exposed right, left and centre, consumers are now in no doubt whatsoever that the only thing business is interested in is profit and does not give a toss about Mr and Mrs Joe Public except to try and empty their wallets as quickly as possible.

So, these days when politics and business want to persuade voters and consumers to but their ideology, products and services, they'd better look closely at the way Graeme Smith is talking to his team, the competition, the media and the cricketing public.

What Smith seems to have realised is that effective communications is not just about getting those who are listening to him to understand what he is saying but to be inspired and motivated by what he is saying.

His change of communications strategy from aggressive, tub-thumping confrontation to humility has been praised by the media, particularly in Australia, and has clearly caused a lot of discomfort in the Australian cricket team who were expecting Smith to try and out-sledge them.

Humility is nothing new. Some very successful politicians and businessmen and women have used it to great effect. Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi are great examples, as are Archbishop Tutu, Raymond Ackerman, Harry Oppenheimer and a host of others. US President elect Obama has also made effective use of it from time to time.

A sweet alternative

But, in the past, humility was an optional extra - something that could be used if you were big enough.

These days, however, with business and politicians experiencing the highest degree of lack of trust that ever before in history, humility is no longer an option but rather an essential if you are in the business of persuading people to do what you want them to do.

And, in sporting terms, we've just been witness to the fact that humility is indeed an extremely sweet alternative to revenge.

When being interviewed, with the exception of Neil McKenzie who appeared arrogant - the entire cricket team came accross as humble. When complimented they always mentioned that it was a team effort with a wonderful leader. Our politicians could sure learn a lesson.

Tuffy 1/5/2009 9:34:29 AM
Most of those business leaders who are in desperate need of reading this article and taking its content to heart are not the ones who would want or bother to read this article. Can't we have it posted on the front pages of all business magazines and business newspapers for a week running?

Punk27 1/5/2009 9:42:37 AM
Now that you mention McKenzie as the arrogant one - isn't it ironic he is the only one not really performing in the team?

Leigh 1/5/2009 10:13:27 AM
Great read and so true .... the aussies do not know how to handle humility. The klap that business has received recently will hopefully be the foundation for a more caring and consumer friendly environment. Many will not agree but what has happened to the economy should be a source of humiliation for all the corporate / business obsessed of the world. It shows total failure and the bailouts around the world are akin to beggars in the street receiving money for bread ....

Excalibur 1/5/2009 10:17:40 AM
But I thought Neil was actually quite fine. His statement of "it has been a nice year to be part of the squad" summed up the team spirit of the squad. For the rest of it, humility is evidence of the fact that you realise that you have limitations. I am not sure that this is particularly a politicians strong suite. They never do anything, how can they possibly fail. They are only into the "Grand explanation of failure", how can they possibly be humble.

wazzup 1/5/2009 10:18:05 AM
Good one, Chris. Humility is what saved South Africa from a horrible bloodbath when Nelson Mandela was released after 27 years of being imprisoned by us Whites. He could have taken revenge - and turned South Africa into the mess we see so often on this Continent. Thank God he did not - and we are all the beneficiaries. Humility is one of the greatest of all human characteristics, and it does not mean weakness - in fact, totally the opposite: choosing to turn the other cheek as Someone once said.

biobot 1/5/2009 10:22:10 AM
Arrogance stems from insecurity. Humility comes with self-belief.

eduardo 1/5/2009 10:26:17 AM
I'm glad I'm not the only one to notice. He is a sour puss and def has a great opinion of himself. Look forward to Prince's return & McK making space for Duminy in the side. No time for windgate.

Leigh 1/5/2009 10:37:59 AM
Arrogance stems from insecurity. Humility comes with self-belief. Well said and so true .....

FOTA 1/5/2009 10:50:04 AM
JP and Neil are two very different positions. Neither Prince or JP are going to open, EVER. In fact, they compete for a spot. If Mc goes it should be Boeta Dippenaar that comes in. God forbid that it is Gibbs. And Neil Mc plays an invaluable part in helping Smith with captaincy - bear that in mind.

I am a member of COPE and I thoroughly endorse the viewpoint advanced by Chris. The depth of one's argument rather than the sound of it is what matters most. Greater humility combined with a greater work ethic in our politics will take our beautiful country far. Let's all strive for humility at all times.

Experience 1/5/2009 11:08:24 AM
Perhaps years of eating humble pie and causing S.African's to avoid making eye contact with Aussies(fearing a conversation that might lead to cricket), has finally sunk in. Lets just hope this bit of success won't go to their heads, though undoubtably we'll be touting ourselves as the true no 1 in no time.

Christian 1/5/2009 11:20:15 AM
Hi Chris, Great Article, Jesus Christ, whether you belive his message or not, was the most humble person to walk the earth, we Christian or not, need to follow his lead. God Bless ...

BengalTiger 1/5/2009 11:26:36 AM
I am aFronted by MF Cassim's comments. What nonsense. A good ROAR while hiding in the shrubbery has never done me any hard. I have an MEC post and never have to do anything except use taxpayers money to put self-congratulation messages in the newspapers. It is all about hot air puffed out in front of the smoke and lights. Substance ... BAH HUMBUG!!!! ... Don't POKE the Tiger, I will tie my dog LOOSE .. and all.

Gadget geek 1/5/2009 12:36:16 PM
Mckenzie doesnt have humble in his vocabulary and with him being the poorest performer in this series it's time soneone gives him a good serving of Humble pie and drops him from the side. He won't be missed, all that's needed is a slight shuffling of the batting order and there's room for more talented more humble players. it would be the cherry on the top of the "cake".

gummibear 1/5/2009 12:43:50 PM
....until the politicians decided to use this article as a platform. Humility, along with traits such as respect/apathy/forgiveness/etc, should not be something to aspire to. It should come naturally, like breathing air. Or in the Aussie' case, losing badly.

IceMan26 1/5/2009 1:02:12 PM
Fantastic message in the article, and I really admire people who are humble, regardless of what they have or have acheived. But, isn't humility a personality trait rather than a communication tool ?!

MiddleOrder 1/5/2009 1:15:32 PM
Watching McK get a 50 to carry his bat during the second innings at MCC. All the commentators here were just warming up their second helping of porridge and looking for fault somewhere. The TEAM is doing well, leave them alone.Anyone who has ever built or lead teams will tell you that you don't change a winning team without good reason. Open another beer, leave the experts to their jobs and get off McK's case. Why not drop Kallis for Prince, he has had a tough run as well?

Joe 1/5/2009 1:25:19 PM
Some historical perspective. Cronje was over tense and a crook (however the romantics delude themselves). Pollock the reluctant captain was mentally weak against the Australians. The leadership spiraled down with him to the World Cup 2003. Smith appointed captain at 22 (younger than Duminy now)was sent to Oz with a novice manager. He's 27 now and the reason why the Proteas are succeeding. Also the best batsman in the world in 2008 - because of confidence and bravery . Ignorami! Get off his back!

Hammer 1/5/2009 1:25:21 PM
There's absolutely nothing wrong with Mac. All you dissing him at the moment is just jealous cos he has Kerry and you don't. Wake up - He made more than a 1000 runs in test cricket in 2008 - how many of you did that??????

Joe 1/5/2009 1:33:06 PM
Scored 99 against Warne and McGrath at their best. Was discarded by the "experts" running SA cricket and has been in the Wilderness while people like Dipenaar failed. He is not a natural opening batsman but has fulfilled the role pretty well saving tests in India and England. Lets see Prince trying to adapt to opening - joke!!!. In case you didnt' notice McKenzie was responsible for some of Smith's inspired field placings in this series.

FOTA 1/5/2009 1:48:41 PM
Traits like APATHY do come naturally to politicians. And Gadget Geek - have you actually met McKenzie, or is this opinion just a result of a 15 second sound bite? - His Crickinfo profile refers to him as "unassuming" and "likeable". I guess the people who actually know him have just got it wrong. Much better to judge a mans character via television. Easy, painless, at least for you. I think we should bury him in the ground to his neck and stone him to death. That would show our OWN humility.

Joe 1/5/2009 2:03:56 PM
Concerned about humility in SA captains. How about a blog on Cronje hurling a stump through the umpire's door after the game!! Model captaincy ? You confuse humility with a strategy of focussing on one's self and the team instead of the Australians. Any cricketer is bound to be humble because it is a humbling game. Great cricketers unlike chokers subjugate their fear. Great captains - like Smith who when he retires will be SA's greatest ever -infuse their team with confidence.

Met Uysh! 1/5/2009 2:13:33 PM
Must be one of the most hard done by chaps in cricket. He was one of the top performers in 2008 and probably the only guy who could play Warne - until he was dropped for some stupid reason, his girl was too hot. I would go as far to say the Maccie should be captain for the home leg of the tests should Smithie not be available. I still think Smith is an a*hole, but he has done brilliantly. The same way I think Warne was brilliant but still and a*hole.

Hammer 1/5/2009 2:28:15 PM
I have no knowledge about Hansie's stump through the door thing. Please do tell the story?

FOTA 1/5/2009 2:50:36 PM
Are you serious??? ... Warne, Ponting, Hussain, Kevin Peterson, Symonds, Dravid, Ganguly, Dhoni, all humble? And leave Hansie out of the discussion. He is dead, gone, preferably forgotten. I agree with you completely on McKenzie, every player has a tough time now and again. I believe he is key to their success.

Darkwing 1/5/2009 3:23:25 PM
Indeed, when you open your mouth, it just spills out, the garbage we get from government everyday. I would be ashamed to say I was part of it. History will remember you and your ilk as, not tigers, but sloths, moving slowly from point to point.

KC 1/5/2009 4:05:49 PM
Chris, great article, I agree 100%. In my first year at university, I was fortunate enough to sit in on a lecture by Raymond Ackerman. His humility shone through and I believed him when he said (in not so many words though), that making money is second to adding value to the consumers that keep his business running and successful. I think we can as a country, learn something from great leaders such as Raymond Ackerman, Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Tutu.

TB 1/5/2009 11:04:48 PM
Most humble guy on the planet. NOT. Why hould we be so ever humble while the ex-convicts are so full of it? Sorry, humble pie my ass!!!
