No points for negativity

2009-07-06 08:08

I reckon the point demerit system that is being brought in to curb delinquency on our roads should be expanded to people who bring our country into disrepute.

I'm not sure it will work on our roads because the idea is that motorists are given a bunch of points and with every offence they commit, points get taken away and when they have none left they lose their driving licences.

It's going to be hard to take away drivers' licences from those millions of South Africans motorists who actually don't have one to start with, but the concept of demerit points for bad behaviour is a good one.

And as we enter an age of points scoring, it is probably time to look at a demerit points system for people who do or say stupid things that harm Brand South Africa.

Like Pieter de Villiers and Schalk Burger for starters. And all those politicians and unionists who say the most incredibly silly things and make the world look down their noses at us and shake their heads in awe. Then go and travel or invest somewhere else.

Restaurant owners who rip tourists off and some of those immigration officers airports who treat visiting tourists as though they were all clandestinely trying to import a combination of swine flu and anthrax into the country. The list is endless. Every day some South African somewhere is trashing the country with acts and words of sheer insanity.

Let's face it; this is important stuff we are talking about. Right now with the economic meltdown every country in the world is fighting to entice tourists and investors.

Surely there can be nothing more important these days than a country's reputation?
But, it seems to me anyone can do anything they like to tarnish the image of this country without getting into any sort of trouble.

Which is crazy. In the old days they used to behead people for treason against the state for saying things a heck of a lot less inflammatory than some of those choice remarks coming from Pieter de Villiers recently.

Sure, we need to speak out about crime, fraud and corruption in government. That's not what I am talking about. Sheer stupidity should also carry some sort of punishment.

Maybe we should have a special section of the Constitutional Court with the power to take demerit points away from people who make South Africa looked stupid. Every citizen, company and politician should start off with say, 12 points and every time they do or say something that brings the country into disrepute a certain number of points should be taken away until such time as they have none left and be required by law not to keep their mouths shut for a period of two years.

South Africa is a great country. I would like to say greater than most because we have managed to get ahead without having to indulge in a bloody revolution or bomb the daylights out of other countries which seems to be the way developed nations like doing things.

Sure, we have our problems. But, we are shooting ourselves in the foot by not protecting our own brand.

It's tough enough having to deal with real issues without having to put up with idiots who shoot their mouths off without thinking about the damage they do to us all.

Well, the best to be said for your scheme is that Julius Malema and his comrades are already -300 points....so they should shut up for the next 25 years.....

turbo_superboss 7/6/2009 8:30:30 AM
good article Chris

kwk 7/6/2009 9:11:26 AM
Do you realise what a dangerous thing you are suggesting?Negativity is bad, sure. But this will be a communist era tool to silence all criticism of the government!I can't believe you are saying this, this is surely the last time that I have ever clicked on something you wrote.

fizzpop 7/6/2009 9:11:50 AM
Yes Chris i agree with you.Recently Deputy police minister Fikile Mbalula said something about "OPERATION WANYA TSOTSI"...what an offensive word !! It does not matter you are Zulu, xhosa, sepedi ,venda etc IT remain offensive across all africa langauges(even our sabc sesotho news reporter was unable to say it live on the TV).These guys must watch their mouth or else not allowed to talk to media or public at all.

ken 7/6/2009 9:19:51 AM
Chris, you are down to 10 points!

Willem 7/6/2009 9:45:56 AM
Good point, Chris. When people realize that their own political or personal opniion does not exist in a vacuum, we can start getting somewhere. I suppose the first candidate for demerit will be Julius Malema. The question however, is this: when is it freedom of expression and when is worthy of demerit? Who will draw the line? Most probably, the Malemas and other idiots of his ilk, so: Is it implementable? If we get told" you cannot say what Julius would have said", we are out of the woods. But, when Julius and his type-he represents an archetypal mentality, hear that they are being censored on ground of blatant idiocy, they will want to "play a meaningful role in the dialogue leading to the decision" of what is fre speech and what is demiritable. That's the problem, not your idea.
Thanks for another good article.

Trish 7/6/2009 9:50:49 AM
Totally agree. The tongue has much to account for and very difficult to tame!

Q 7/6/2009 9:53:09 AM
Nice thought Chris, but they unable or unwilling to control the taxi already.
Also, this is just going to degenerate into another avenue for bribery and corruption.
As the saying goes – “A fish rots from the head"

desire 7/6/2009 9:59:28 AM
good article. all these hooligans who like to give their 2c worth of comments have already diminished their points. Shut up or ship out of South Africa. This is Africa, things are done the african way, whether you are white, indian, black or blue. we must stop comparing South Africa with UK or USA, they also have their own problems. Let South Africa have its own problems and shut your traps.

terry 7/6/2009 10:24:35 AM
Traffic demerit is a good idea but in the south african context could be a massive failure , REASON - enforcement ! We can barely enforce some of the most basic laws now ... additionally for the system to work you need motoring public that actually sees a reason for road laws rather than annoyance which hampers their ability to get where they going at top speed . How many taxi drivers will have their licences after just 1 day ? Oh... i forgot they are excempt form road laws!

Q 7/6/2009 10:44:32 AM
Nice thoughts Chris, but this is just another avenue for bribery and corruption. The government is not even capable of controling the taxi industry.
As the saying goes "A fish rots from the head"

as i see it 7/6/2009 11:00:38 AM
@kwk: Read the article again in slow motion so that you may comprehend what Chris is saying. He is not talking about criticism, but merely pointing out that stupidity which is practised by all the mamparas is giving SA a bad name.

Reg 7/6/2009 11:01:49 AM
I think the facts speak louder than anything anyone can say, to wit: child rape, murder of tourists, incompetent bureaucracy, propping up the despotic Mugabe, and the list goes on. It is not what people say that is the problem, Mr Moerdyk. It is what they DO that creates the negative perceptions. Even if the entire country zipped it up and said nothing, the trashy reputation would persist. Just as the apartheid aparatchiks who decried gainsayers in old days discovered: talking up the brand does not help when the country is imploding.

Fred 7/6/2009 11:08:31 AM
We don't need more control by a central, provincial, and muncipal government that answers only to the party. We need more freedom and a government that answers to the electorate.

Saffa 7/6/2009 11:35:26 AM
It's absolutely crazy that we live in a country where people are allowed to say stupid things and actually get away with it. After some recent comments from Malema and PDV I've done some reading on the overseas news sites. They seem to think we all have the same mentality as these two half wits becauase we choose to back them instead of reprimanding them. Communist it may seem but it sure will shut these fools up.

Anon 7/6/2009 11:39:24 AM
Chris, a merit system for politicians, this cannot work as there will be none left, or this would probably be a good thing!

David 7/6/2009 11:47:36 AM
I don't believe the demerit points system will be enough motivation to stop people driving badly, including myself. And policing it is another story. I believe an immediate penalty should be incurred. A time penalty! Like in F1. Its all about time in F1 and so to in life. Its the most precious commodity. You're speeding, doing 95 in a 60 zone. The cops pull you over and confiscate your keys for 1 hour. If you're doing over 100, two hours. That is going to hurt. Especially taxi drivers. These drivers bosses don't want to here that they cost them 2 hours worth of business. Even myself. I may be late for a meeting with a client. And then it will finally sink in that saving 2 minutes by speeding or jumping a red light doesn't pay, especially when you receive a 1 or 2 hour penalty. Justice is swift, direct and effective. Like a caining at school. ;-).

Piet 7/6/2009 11:49:33 AM
And how many points do you lose for alleging that most/many South African drivers do not have licenses? That would certainly give me pause for thought as an investor/tourist!

Maverick 7/6/2009 11:51:28 AM
With "idiots that shoot their mouths off"-do you mean barbaric morons like Julius Malema who threaten the whole of SA with being killed?

TC 7/6/2009 12:04:52 PM
Let's support Chris and tell lies to make the country look good!

Doc Lize 7/6/2009 12:06:32 PM
I absolutely agree. I'm sick and tired of people making SA out as some hell hole where you walk in fear of your life the whole time. This is simply not true.Because of my work, I, a woman, have to travel alone at all hours. I do this without fear. When I spot suspicious people at crossroads, I pass quickly and phone the local police. And YES! Every single time, by the time I pass again, on my way back home, a police van is busy investigating. I'm talking about 3 different police stations. In the neighbourhood where I live, my kids and their friends play every day 'till dark in the local park. The neighbourhood came together and hired a private security firm who patrol the neighbourhood and help the police. We hardly have any crime. If anyone spots a suspicious person or vehicle, they phone the security firm and they investigate immediately. We are not a gated community, but we watch out for each other. Oh yes, another shocker, I live in Pretoria, about 2 km away from the city centre and Sunnyside. Some useful numbers for those that want to do something and not only whine about the bad, bad times:
Crime stop:0860010111. (I even phoned them about unsupervised cattle next to the high way) Voila, the cattle were removed.Potholes in Pta roads: 012 3580614. The potholes are fixed within 24 hours. Corruption: DA parliamentarian: Jack Bloom:0823334222. He'll give the perpetrators hell. For those pessismists who insist on seeing only doom and gloom: Open your eyes, smile a little and stop being such insufferable pain in the behinds. Do something constructive, instead of only moaning and plastering SA with insults. You only make yourself and other people miserable and successfully scare potential investors and tourists away. How on earth does going on and on about crime, corruption etc, (Universal problems) solve anything or make any situation better? For international crime stats: check out nationmaster.com. There are some shockers for the whiners.

john 7/6/2009 1:14:24 PM
we need to shut up the media.they the ones reporting all the negativity.they are the ones to blame.just look at all the media coverage given to julius malema.

TB 7/6/2009 1:26:07 PM
@ Doc Lize: Now you hit the nails on the heads. Gatvol of those constant whiners too.

warmaster 7/6/2009 1:36:01 PM
You are stupid. No points for your ideas.

EM 7/6/2009 1:39:36 PM
A generally good article, however the insight expressed by Chris, that points should be taken away from people who make South Africa look stupid, does not enable us to construct strong explanations of the behaviour that we observe. I think Chris makes a very narrow generalisation in assuming that there is a single image or brand of South Africa (as defined by government) wrapped in nationalist fervour. The concept of “nation states” and “nationalism” is an idea that has long gone. The applicability of these terms in a South African context is at best optimistic, considering the existing fault lines which cut across culture, norms, ethnicity and religion.

critical cynic 7/6/2009 3:36:28 PM
I have no doubt that many will find that an interesting idea, but who decides where the line is to be drawn, and how many changes will we have to make to our constitution in order to limit our freedom of speach? Nope, I don't subscribe to this being a good idea at all - you should lose points for even daring to suggest it because the same mamparas that drop clangers on a regular basis are likely to try to run with a dangerous idea like this, an idea that threatens everyone's freedom of speach and could send us into the kind of world that the former East Germany 'enjoyed'. Reg has the right idea that I propose we build upon, that we 'reward' actions, negative and positive ones, with appropriate ACTION. Reduce the negative activities within our country and a good reputation and brand South Africa will naturally follow, deservedly so because we will then have earned it. Presently we have earned the reputation we have...

BLACKsoWHAT!@Doc Lize 7/6/2009 3:49:11 PM
I like your response.....

fern 7/6/2009 3:53:46 PM
HEAR HEAR! Minus 1000 points for disgruntled expats!

crtitical cynic 7/6/2009 3:59:16 PM
Doc Lize, are you an ostrich that you are able to quote an internation statistics site that clearly shows that murder, rape, and crime in general are rampant here? Perhaps if more people bothered to report crimes because they believed and had faith that the police would respond appropriately, you would retract your statement and hang your head in shame for claiming that this 'is simply not true' when faced with the real facts. Your travelling around alone at all hours must surely be from the locked cocoon of your [probably German luxury] car. That aside, well done for doing what more should be and at least taking positive action.

Trumpi 7/6/2009 4:12:32 PM
Better not say anything bad. Big Brother is watching me.

benzo 7/6/2009 4:43:36 PM
Is that not what dictators do? How does freedom of speech fit in this picture?

Paul 7/6/2009 4:45:02 PM
"People who made South Africa looked stupid..."? Oh dear. That is, um, prety stupid in itself. Off with your head!

Anon 7/6/2009 5:14:54 PM
@john 1:14:24 PM, dont give the media the blame, old inkwenkwe Juluis has only himself to blame, no help needed.

CJ 7/6/2009 6:09:30 PM
@Desire: sorry, you're now down to 10 points.
@David: I love the idea! A logistical nightmare, probably, but an immediate impact will definitely be more of a deterrent!
@Saffa: anyone who judges an entire country based on 2 representatives of it isn't terribly clever themselves... sure, the country looks bad in the overseas media, but I'm sure most individual people realise that just like they disagree with some things with their government, and don't condone the action and speech of each and every politician in their country, neither do we.

Nicholas 7/7/2009 6:56:42 AM
I agree with "desire" - violence, crime and corruption is the african way so stop to criticize it - ship out.

Len 7/7/2009 8:41:26 AM
Whinging should be a crime punishable by deportation. Next time you hear someone whinge about the country, tell them to move where they will be happy and never return (or slink back, as many do) when things are not as good in Australia or the weather is bad in Canada and England.

Stats about SA 7/7/2009 11:46:24 AM
@crtitical cynic, just to add to your comment, if anyone watched Carte Blanche, you would know that our crime stats are rigged as well, in order to make the police look good and as though they are winning the war on crime. I think the more people around the world know about our crime issue the better, at first it will hurt SA, but at least then it could become top priority to fight crime.

plank 7/8/2009 10:17:20 AM
people complain but doing nothing at the end of the day for nobody not even for themseves for that matter they are idiots as well like everyone they pointing fingers at

ex-pat 7/9/2009 4:14:14 PM
Chris, how firmly is your tongue wedged in your cheek? I hope it is, because you usually come across as intelligent. If not, you are asking us to lie when we're asked specific questions about SA. "Will I be safe on holiday in SA?" "Of course! As long as you keep all your windows locked, don't use a cellphone in public, clutch your bag in both hands at all times, watch your back, drive through red lights at night in case hijackers are lurking, etc., etc., et."

Hilly 7/10/2009 12:36:22 PM
The rot lies a little deeper, the state is doing a Mugabe by blaming the west for any problems, in SA's case not the 'west' but there does seem to be a state sponsored xenophobic attitude that needs to be adressed
