Let's hear it for Brand Zuma

2009-05-11 12:42

Chris Moerdyk

Whether a brand succeeds or fails often depends on whether it can live up to its advertising claims.

So, let's look at all the advertising behind Brand Zuma.

Certainly, as far as I can see, it's been very good.

He wants to return to the values set by Nelson Mandela. Good advertising that.

He wants to promote "friendship, harmony, co-operation and unity" among political parties. A tough call but at least he is saying he wants to try.

He wants to get his MP's to understand opposition politics and not turn every bit of criticism from the opposition into a petulant confrontation.

And how about this for great advertising? He told ANC MPs, provincial leaders and his cabinet that they had better knuckle down and do some hard work.

And he has created a special body within the presidency just to make sure that everyone is pulling their weight and do it honestly. His ads literally screamed; "Get on with it or get out."

He has also said that he owes nobody anything which seems to be advertising the fact that the Mbeki era of jobs for friends and protecting one's buddies, is over.

Then, he has frequently advertised the fact that he won't put up with fraud or corruption in government.

Let's face it; we can't fault Brand Zuma's advertising campaign one bit. Like great advertising, all of it seems to be exactly what South Africa consumers want to hear. And there is some humble stuff as well, like saying he only wants to serve one term of office.

So, Brand Zuma advertising is great. Now we need to see if we like the taste of what's to come.

I reckon Brand Zuma advertising might just have surprised those prophets of doom who couldn't see anything in the product than bad taste and rotten eggs.

But, I am going to make a note in my diary to reprint this column in 100 days from now to see just how much of Brand Zuma advertising is true and whether any of it has been misleading.

Send your comments to Chris.

...and all you usual ANC bashers (like bigmouth "show us some hard FACTS" Juan) will swallow your words and come apologise! ANC will deliver and help the poor masses that still struggle due to the past injustices. Viva ANC! Viva President Zuma!!

Mr Politically Correct 5/11/2009 1:09:50 PM
Well, I wait with bated breath to see if the tickets that are sold due to glitzy fanfare marketing show which has cost R75 mill plus plus..plus of course the huge additional infrastructural spend in the cabinet plus all the rest will add up to a great return on investment which will be quality services to all...my hunch is that you can't give what you don't have and in this case it means that if the overall substance of the cabinet is weak you cannot expect it to deliver on promises!!

Chris 5/11/2009 1:10:04 PM
Like any product or service, the test of time will tell. Unlike other products or services, we are locked in for the next five years. So far, the spiel sounds good on the ear. Let's hope and pray we don't hate the next five years.

Aj 5/11/2009 1:15:53 PM
...and will the ASA slap him on the wrists if his advertising has been misleading or can we stand in line to dish out the punishment?

Proudly SA 5/11/2009 1:20:40 PM
I must say I had a good laugh at this, I am certainly one of those people who are waiting anxiously to see what this administration will do. I am not pro-Zuma but I have to admit he is saying all the right stuff. I will be waiting for your article in a 100 days. Great stuff!!!

roxy73 5/11/2009 1:30:18 PM
A fine bit of advertising. Here's hoping he will deliver the goods. However I feel that SA's patience is wearing thin, and those in power had better start moving it! If no delivery, I wonder if Hellopeter will help?

Karen 5/11/2009 1:37:08 PM
I am no Zuma fan, nor am I an ANC fan. In fact I have no faith in either and find them both a big embarrassment to this country - that aside, if Zuma does end up coming good and delivering what he says he will, I will gladly swallow my words. If Zuma does a good job we will all benefit. I am not going to hope he fails to prove my point, but my life in this country is destroyed, that would be very immature. He seems to have made a good start with his announcement of cabinet - not too bad. I do not however agree with this business of people judging parties by how much they intend to do for the poor. That is a terrible strategy for strengthening a country - although it is a good policy for winning votes since there are so many poor. I agree they do need help, but you don't focus all attention and resources on the weakest link in a chain while the stronger links take all the strain, you will only succeed in have a weakening the strong while strengthening the weak and before you know it everybody will be weak (poor). You can never have everybody strong (rich).

Love Africa 5/11/2009 1:39:32 PM
I didn't get information on Tswane but with all the overwelling evidence on corruption in that department. If they have retained the corrupt individuals then Zuma adminsitration has failed on the very first hurdle.

Ulaka 5/11/2009 1:46:25 PM
...to help the poor masses that still struggle due to past injustices. To actually do some good for his people. Or he could just become like all the other useless presidents of Africa before him - stinking rich.

Topdog 5/11/2009 1:47:45 PM
Pete, nobody needs to apologise for critising any other political party. It's called freedom of speech. Let the branding start immediately at the Tshwane government / municipality, then people may start paying attention, until then I only hear more empty promises.

Honky Tonk Man 5/11/2009 1:50:35 PM
Oh please, have you ever seen an advertised product live up to its hype? No! Neither have i....so , don't expect this to be any different.

Papa 5/11/2009 2:01:41 PM
So far Zuma has proven to be a fighter and a winner, only sore losers fail to see this simple fact. He has triumphed against lack of education, being an orphan at a young age. He begged other kids to share with him what they learned at school, he is able to read, write and speak fluent Zulu, Xhosa and English because of his quest for knowledge. He rose up through theranks of ANC in Robben Island and in exile, served in govt, survived charges and is now President! Wow, amazing, Zuma is Winner!

BLACKsoWHAT! 5/11/2009 2:01:57 PM
are anxiously waiting, albeit with hope and trust for the ANC... i repeat ANC. A far cry from the 'Jokers' that would want nothing more than to see the "country going down aka banana republic".

Od 5/11/2009 2:02:59 PM
I wishing the new administartion all the best in the development of our country. Time will tell...Im hopeful, but not simply believing all will be done..I need to see to believe.

S 5/11/2009 2:17:45 PM
Heard it all before....empty promises....the previous President said the same. Nothing materialized. Crime and general incompetency will remain. But I will be the first to congratulate if things actually change.

Neall 5/11/2009 2:19:32 PM
As in all things Africa, time will tell!! Unfortunately the term " No rush in Africa" is one that has sought to destroy this continent country by country, and some quicker than others. Sadly African leaders have adopted this and the resultant is a failure of service delivery & failure to serve their people. All eyes will be on JZ and will be monitoring his "advertising" campaign, & i live in the hope that for just once an African leader can break away from business as usual, business UNUSUAL!!

Wdp 5/11/2009 2:21:43 PM
Pete, time will tell. I would advise saving any swallowing of words and opologies for later, if necessary. These are early days yet, my friend.

Kosie 5/11/2009 2:33:45 PM
And I am going to win the lotto....

mkabayi 5/11/2009 3:14:07 PM
I doubt there is anything that a black person/government will do which will ever be good enough in the eyes of some of our white compatriots. All white governments pre-1994 really delivered, were competent and not corrupt. Their competence created townships, informal settlements and a huge number of uneducated black people; some of the things the ANC has been trying to eradicate since 94.Stop fooling yourselves. You are not as good or infallible as you'd like to deceive yourselves.Nxx!!

Jacques 5/11/2009 3:37:01 PM
I hope and pray but.... our friend Zuma does not have the gray matter to turn the train around.

Recato Cristiano Eberwein 5/11/2009 3:54:37 PM
Bow down to our Saviour Comrade President Jacob Zuma. Those of you who dont buy into the brand shall quickly learn your mistake. The ANC is the only party which has the interest of the people at hand. Julle Afrikaners moet wakker skrik en besef dat julle agteruitgaan. Amandla! Viva Mugabe, Viva Malema. Well done to late honorable Dimitri Tsafendas for killing that idiot Verwoerd. You will be one of the heros until death. Bow down to the Red Terror!! Viva Communist Party!!!

The mojority of SA was convinced by the advertising and has bought the product on SA's behalf, thats democracy. Let's just hope that he is not one of those Verimark products that sound convincing but is in fact useless, I have a few of those. I like what he is saying, feeling sort of optimistic. Early days still, and I will be the 1st to apologise should he actually deliver, here's hoping! A good start would be his reaction to the Tshwane scandals of late......!

Heather 5/11/2009 4:33:51 PM
There's a village out there somewhere missing it's idiot......

gerald 5/11/2009 4:43:27 PM
So far, at every speech Zuma gave pre-election, he was all things to all men. To businessmen, he was pro-business. To the unions, pro-workers etc etc. Let's see what actually happens. Does a leopard change his spots? As for R.C. Eberwein's heroic comments - since when do they allow laptops in Sterkfontein?

BT 5/11/2009 5:26:06 PM
Heather, you are wrong, there is no village missing its idiot. With this type of mentality, the whole village ceased to exist. Its like having 1 brain cell, but that one died of boredom!! Its frightening to think that someone with this type of brain capacity can actually lift "itself" up and stop drooling long eneogh to type a few garbled words on a keyboard!!

Chris 5/11/2009 5:38:35 PM
... besides for the drivel you speak, Tsafendas has been dead for quite a few years now. Idiotic misinformation from a misinformed idiot, methinks.

Recato Cristiano Eberwein 5/11/2009 6:13:38 PM
Heather somewhere there is a gallow missing your head....

'Mugabe also uses his other weapon, charm, to disarm his opponents."He is so charming we sometimes have to remind ourselves what he has done to us personally and to the country," said a top businessman after meeting Mugabe. The above quote from a current article on Zim sounds oddly familiar. What does Zuma stand for? See the rather wan look on Pius Langa's face as he swore Zuma in. Langa's brother died in mysterious circumstances in 80's when Zuma was deputyhead of ANC security. c
