I can't take it anymore...

2008-02-13 09:10

Chris Roper

I can't take this shit anymore. What the hell is wrong with you people? You're so negative, I'm surprised the air doesn't freeze around your empty heads.

The latest pile of pessimistic crap to pass across my much abused desktop is a blog entry from one A Smith (an alias, I assume), entitled "Another reason to emmigrate [sic]."

Let me quote the blurb in full: "Never mind our electricity issues, crime and political mayhem - I've found another reason to emmigrate [sic] from South Africa. Business in the rest of the world sounds so damn easy!"

The blog's called Ideate, which I assume is a corruption of the word "idiot", and it's touted as: "Some passionate entrepreneurs share stories, adventures and lessons in their quest to do great business on the Dark Continent."

Yes, you read that correctly. The Dark Continent. Ha ha! The Dark Continent! Sob.

Let me get this straight: you want to do great business, but your idea of selling your environment as business-friendly is to refer to it as "The Dark Continent"? That's like selling Big Macs with a campaign that starts "Now with more minced hoof and intestine!"

Genius comes in many forms

I shouldn't be so critical of the ideates, I guess. They're just trying to keep a smile on their faces while confronting some pretty crap realities in South Africa. But when you start looking everywhere for reasons to emigrate, I can't help thinking that you've already made your minds up.

The blog entry paints a picture of how easy it is to raise R30m if you aren't living in this goddam hellhole of a country, a place so incredibly backward, dangerous and, yes, dark, that you can't even get someone to give you millions of rand to put up a site with videos of fat people dancing.

Here's the entry, pretty much in full: "Take these guys for example: DanceJam. They've come up with the idea of a website where people can upload videos of themselves dancing, and other people rate them. Wow, pure genius. Never mind that they haven't even launched yet, let alone made a cent in revenues, but they've been given over R30m in funding by investors. That makes this "idea" (plus some unfinished code and a few servers) worth more than a bunch of our established, and profitable listed companies on the JSE."

Now this idea isn't such genius. One of my staff thought of it a few months ago (and she ain't no genius), but we didn't launch it because we live in a country with minimal broadband penetration, and where the advertising model is such that you need massive traffic to make video-upload sites a more attractive proposition than, say, a site with pictures of girls with big breasts sitting on motorbikes.

I know, this is the Dark Continent, where people have natural rhythm, but even this obvious plus didn't sway our business decision.

At least he can spell 'emigrate'

Also, a minimum of research reveals that the person who raised this funding in America was MC Hammer, which is slightly different to some arb coming in off the street with the idea. And I'll bet MC Hammer can spell emigrate, which probably also makes a difference to the way his business proposals are received.

There's also just one other small point. We live in South Africa. South Africa, it will shock some of you to learn, is not in fact a small province of Silicon Valley, or even an outlying suburb of London. We have our own reality to live with, and yes, it includes companies like Eskom, who really should be the ones with the business slogan "a quest to do great business on the Dark Continent", since they're the morons apparently hellbent on making it dark.

But it also includes a host of great business opportunities, and lots of people willing to take chances on good ideas. We can all have big ideas that'll work in America, but having ones that work here is not as easy. And I don't think they'll work in Australia either, if that's what you were thinking.

Now we can go two ways with this. I could just pour more scorn on Ideate, or I could get a little more positive on their arses. It's easy to criticise negative people, but that's just heaping negativity on negativity, and if I remember my high school physics correctly, all that gets you is tears.

So I suggest you pop over to their blog to check out their entries, and then offer them money if they have any good ideas. And tell them to cheer up. They clearly haven't lost their sense of humour, but maybe some thief has stolen their perspective.

I was actually thinkin about that while driving to work this morning. Africa is not for sissies business wise of course. Its all this one minded ideates who want to emigrate coz business is tough in Africa while countries like China, India are pouring investments in this continent coz they can see bigger returns here than elsewhere. If you can make it in Africa then you can make it anywhere in the world. It separates MAN from Boys.

    Sello 2/13/2008 9:33:37 AM
Ya, I'm also sick and tired of these people threatening to emigrate all the time, why don't they just leave silently? I think they make noise about it because deep inside they would love to stay in this country and are hurting that their circumstances are forcing them to leave. They must just go and leave us alone, and I hav a message for them, no matter where you go in the whole planet, home will always be home!

    Jacqui 2/13/2008 9:35:23 AM
So what a very large corporation has now changed Titan to TyTn - spelling is not relevant any more. And as for being positive ha! What is it you would you like to say to Toni and Roger Williams that could possibly make them be positive about this country? Get real - we are all negaive because there is no hope!

    niels 2/13/2008 9:37:41 AM
Dear Chris I notice more and more bad language creeping in from the columnists. I don't think it is healthy. Don't get me wrong, on an average day, I will probably out-swear you and I am not a prude. But let's find a different way to express irritation than to start with "I can't take this shit anymore."

    Ashleigh 2/13/2008 9:42:00 AM
Good for you Chris ... it is so nice to hear someone standing up for our country (and continent)for a change. I think people need to stop expecting first world standards of a third world country it is unrealistic and only leads to disappointment. Just appreciate what we have and work within that framework to make it better.

    James 2/13/2008 9:43:13 AM
I find it strange that people believe it is easier to do business in other countries than our own. I am a well travelled businessman. I thank my lucky stars that I base my business in SA. It is by far the easiest place to do business in the world that I have seen. Just the phrase "The Dark Continent" already pricks up my ears to opportunity... Huge opportunity!

    terence 2/13/2008 9:43:14 AM
ag leave the bloke alone man, if he wants to emigrate and bad mouth the country then let him it's his constitutional right to speak his mind or have we lost that as well in the dark country???

    Danny Pienaar 2/13/2008 9:51:19 AM
just a note to say not all Saffa's as we are described over here are negative about South Africa . I still love the country i was born in and promote its most positive aspects . The truth of the matter is money at the end of the day and that is the reason i am over here , I support your argument against expats trashing our country of birth , at the same time for those families who have been robbed of loved ones in the most gruesome ways I really can understand why they do at times .

    Johannes 2/13/2008 10:02:12 AM
I wonder. You seem to love to bad mouth people that does not share your point of view. But do you life the same life as the man in the street ? Do you share the same salary and live in the same enviroment than the majority of us do ? I geuss not for then you would not scream so loud that it is nonsense.. Please become PART of South Africa and live the live we live.. Dont sit on your backside and shout boo boo, and that is where it stops...

    DavidD 2/13/2008 10:03:51 AM
Chris I think your desperation to write a column overcame your judgement. I've just read the DanceJam article and if ever there was a case of "tongue in cheek", that was it. It merely ridiculed how easy it was to raise R30 million for something as hairbrained as this. I believe it's called "irony".

    Paul 2/13/2008 10:06:12 AM
You speak of negativity, I call it reality. Bouncing around South Africa with a smile on your face is not going to make the problems go away. The government's spin doctors are already waging a massive campaign to sugarcoat the country's problems. We are told that things aren't that bad because it also happens in Brazil. In actual fact, whenever something goes wrong we are immediately told that it also happens in another country. Why?. Smiles won't wash away the blood.

    lad 2/13/2008 10:06:20 AM
Never mind the 4 letter words which show a lack of vocabulary, I could not make out what you are trying to say.

    J 2/13/2008 10:11:10 AM
well said... fully agree with your sentiments!

    Chris 2/13/2008 10:17:59 AM
DavidD - it could be irony, which is why I put in stuff about their sense of humour. But it's the language the irony is couched in that I was objecting to. I did, though, give them the benefit of the doubt, hence asking people to go to the blog and give them money. As to the 'desperation' thing - my frustrationi comes from all the mindless negativity that people pour out.

    Johan 2/13/2008 10:18:57 AM
It's exactly this kind of intolerance that South Africans have with other that don't share their same views and beliefs that prevents people from peacefully co-existing. South Africans should make an effort in accepting that people are unique because they are different and stop trying to change everyone around them to be, think and do as themselves.

    The Dark 2/13/2008 10:20:57 AM
There are places in SA that have less crime than Perth.. like Springbok, try that first. SA doesnt stop beyond the borders of Joburg or any other city. We are living in a "connected" era where you can do most things remotely if it comes to that.

    Marius 2/13/2008 10:21:46 AM
In America you have about 250 million internet users compared to the odd 5 million in South Africa (the bulk of them being corporate users). It will be easier to convince investors to support your project with that potential exposure.

    fern 2/13/2008 10:21:57 AM
good article - it is NOT anyones right to speak badly about this country when they are gone and negatively influence things like investment. It just hurts the people who want to stay which is most of us (black and or white) - Economic terrorist expats with no friends cause they lost them when they moved. Now all they do is bad mouth.

    Steven 2/13/2008 10:22:10 AM
Negative you say? Negative? Did you hear the cheers in Parlement yesterday when they announced the demise of the Scorpions?

    dr phil247 2/13/2008 10:28:50 AM
It not they first time these happen ,in 1994 while new SA begin others still leftbut some came back including some big companies. So,if now they feel GATVOL again,so what the hell are they waiting for,AND THEY MUST NEVER come back again bcoz they are here for self gain not even to contribute for nation bulding or to make SA better at all.To all south african what can we do for our loved county to best everyday?

    DavidD 2/13/2008 10:34:04 AM
Chris, I agree with your frustration about all the whinging and negativity, although in this case, I have a feeling the writer is satirising the doomsayers rather than siding with them.

    terence 2/13/2008 10:35:13 AM
sello once again its their constitutional right to banter and criticize and bad mouth the country and whom ever they please after all we all bad mouth eskom and the anc so can they live with it.

    Frank 2/13/2008 10:35:23 AM
Shot in cold blood yesterday in Fairlands. Third tragic loss for Trinityhouse Preparatory School in only four months. And yet, Mr Roper is only positive, even with all the murders and killings happening every hour in South Africa. Wake up and smell the blood. Stop listening to the ANC spindoctors. Ask the kids at Trinityhouse how positive they are this morning about South Africa.

    Gilbert 2/13/2008 10:38:34 AM
Chris, if one complains about the SERVICES in this country, one wants to improve, not break down ok? Get the concept now? We are positive, we want to build .. to help .. to build a better future. ONE CAN'T MEND A FRACTURED COUNTRY IF A BROKEN WINDOW DOESN'T BOTHER YOU!

    Jo 2/13/2008 10:41:14 AM
I agree with Chris that negativity is so much more apparant these days, and I'd like to think that I am positive, but the latest "dissolving" of the Scorpions shows that there is no serious efforts from Goverment to make this a better place for the people. There's benefit to the DSO dissolving, but only to those being investigating by the DSO. My question is how much longer do we have to wait for some sanity in this dark africa? When will someone be brave enought to oppose the madmen?

    Writer 2/13/2008 10:41:15 AM
congratulations Chris!! You have just earned yourself a position in Govt .. Minister without Portfolio .. or something !

    Brandon 2/13/2008 10:48:58 AM
A "four letter word"... whooooo. Anything but that. Chris, it's off to the headmaster's office with you chief. Lad's got some writing tips for you.

    Neil 2/13/2008 10:50:17 AM
Get on with your life... do what you need to do to be happy and successful. For some this could mean leaving the country, for others it could mean staying and adapting to the reality of your circumstances (good and bad). The latter does not mean you need to live in denial, it simply means you need to accept reality and learn to adapt to it. Its really a matter of perspective, but I firmly beleive that to find happiness you need to Fit In or F... Off (FIFO). I have chosen the former.

    PAULA 2/13/2008 10:51:25 AM
When all is said & done (which ever way U look @ it)inside looking out & outside looking in-we all have diff views.Crime is the main issue. And not even I, a loving South African can excuse it.But while we are here on this good earth we have to make the most of it (1 way or another). So stop moaning TRY & look @ the positive things 4 a change. Not 4getting the not so good things that we may have 2 deal with. Stay sweet 1 & all.The Sun shines 4 everyone.

    ITZ 2/13/2008 10:55:14 AM
mindless negativity... yeh, wonder how that happened. Wonder what causes it? MMmmmm, is it a problem anywhere else? Gee, where did you get your blinkers? Wanna get some too; oh no it's your head buried in the compost. People must have got this negative from the asteroid destined to obliterate the planet sometime soon? Yeh that must be it!

    TheOne 2/13/2008 10:59:39 AM
Paul ... when things happen in the country, you mamas' babies complain and say "it's only in this country ...". And when facts are presented to you that it's even in Brazil and the USA, you complain that "whenever something goes wrong we are immediately told that it also happens in another country" ... and you expect to be take seriously when you make noise? Come-on. You seem to take your right to whine too far!

    GE 2/13/2008 11:01:51 AM
Chris, all you did in your collumn was to give reason why its is difficult to do bussiness in SA. The fact that there are reasons for it do not change the fact. You proved their point. And Sello, why shouldn't people not complain about SA. Do you think the ANC come into power becauce they quietly left the country. Complaining and protest (and armed struggles) can lead to improvements and change and there are a lot here what must be improved (just ask Emily Williams's parents)

    Kaas 2/13/2008 11:11:10 AM
Chris, I am not sure what your point is.... On the other hand, I am baffled to understand why you say we should not mention the ?Dark Continent? And lastly, a person that feel the need to use harsh words in an argument because the lack of vocabulary, surely can not be taken seriously. And then he has the cheek to correct typo?s. Ai Chris, you have lost the plot that you thought you had. Dear News24; please screen your Columnists before thyt make morons of them selfs.

    Jason 2/13/2008 11:12:42 AM
If you had 5 extra minutes to skim through the rest of their blog, you would actually understand the irony with regards to his emigrate statement. Oh, and for the benefit of all the people reading this - here is the link to the post: http://www.ideate.co.za/2008/02/11/another-reason-to-emmigrate/

    Bob 2/13/2008 11:14:58 AM
It is amazing that everytime the country has a crisis, the topic of emmigration becomes fashionable. It is as if we [whites] are missing out if we are at least not contemplating leaving for seemingly greener pastures (this is a falacy in most cases by the way...) Remeber one thing, out of chaos comes oppertunity. If you are awake enough to look at the positive aspects of chaos, you can make a difference (and money) whilst enjoying the greatest country on earth.

    alan 2/13/2008 11:21:59 AM
There is truth underlying the complaining. People complain for a reason. I am not leaving. We must find ways to hold the Government to account for their misrule is all... In real democracies, governments like Thabo's failed one are replaced by informed voters in non-rigged elections. If ANC rule can be replaced by better rule, only can all say we live in a true democracy. I live in hope...

    GE 2/13/2008 11:26:01 AM
Neil, did it ever occured to you that there are people how can not leave even if they want. Do you think a person can just walk into another country like you can do into SA. (If you can arrange visas we will appreciate it) PAULA, please name a few positive aspects of SA, we need it. (Plaese not the wheather and the senic thing other countries are beautiful too.)

Jack The Beanstalk 2/13/2008 11:33:35 AM
MC Hammer able to spell emigrate? Shall we put down a side-bet...?

    hopeful 2/13/2008 11:34:42 AM
I'm thinking raising kids in England is worse than in South Africa.. I spent two years there. I would agree rather than give up, lets try help this country to become a better place? We need a new government though! I have alot of black friends who think the ANC are a bunch of ***** .. so its not only whites who think the ANC are crap! oh, and Chris, please refrain from using expletives in your writing. Its juvenile. - Kris
