God bless America

2009-07-29 10:50

God bless America. Yet again, despite the best of intentions, they appear to have elected a man who judges people's actions based on the colour of their skin. At least this time he's stereotyping white police officers, as opposed to blacks, ragheads, chicks and them Frenchies. Which is what we call progress in this sad little world we live in.

I refer, of course, to Barack Obama's instinctive terming of the fantastically named Sergeant Jim Crowley's detaining of African-American academic Henry Louis Gates, as "stupid". This without taking the facts into account - just a pure knee jerk response to race.

Historians among us (I'm looking at you, Wikipedia) will remember America's stab at apartheid, the infamous Jim Crow laws, enacted between 1876 and 1965.

Jim Crow laws include "the segregation of public schools, public places and public transportation, and the segregation of restrooms and restaurants for whites and blacks". The law was named after an 1828 song and dance mockery of black Americans, performed by a white man in blackface.

And here we have a Sergeant Jim Crow(ley), accused of racist law enforcement. Only in the First World, people. You can't make this stuff up.

Leaving aside that history and society seem to indicate that Obama was probably right to infer racial profiling (see, I too can make sweeping presidential assumptions based on gut feel: maybe there will be another white president of South Africa one day), it's not a particularly bright move to polarise your country on racial lines.

But perhaps it's better that Obama's halo slips now, rather than later when the Middle East has already made the fatal choice to give up the burqa so they can all look more like Michelle.

Now lest I be accused of continental profiling, and lest (wow, that's two lests in one sentence, known as the "more is lest" rhetorical gesture) I be accused of thinking that American democracy is, if not the actual second coming of Christ, at least a damn good advance guard, let me offer you another governmental tale, culled from the Cape Times.

We move our attention from America to Zimbabwe (A - Z, get it?), where a woman persuaded a government task team that she could miraculously conjure diesel out of a rock. The task team, presumably well-lubricated, returned to Harare announcing that Zimbabwe's fuel crisis was over. They also paid the miracle woman up to a million US dollars.

The woman, who used the alias Nomatter Tagarira (small clue there in the name, lads?), was convicted of fraud, although inexplicably she didn't turn up for the court case.

Nomatter had help, the court found, from registrar-general Tobaiwa Mudede, coincidentally the man who has run Zimbabwe's elections since 2000. Interesting, interesting, as we say down at the conspiracy theory club.

I retell this story, not to make fun of Zimbabweans, gullible idiots, or witches, but to give Americans hope. You'll be asking yourself, after this terrible WaterGates scandal blows over: is it possible that our president could be just the same as all the other presidents? That is, it's the same old foot in mouth, just a different colour foot? Can Barack Obama possibly be a fallible human being? Yes. Yes he can. But at least he's not a complete utter moron, like most of Zanu-PF.

- This is Chris Roper's last column for News24, as he moves to another, slightly smaller news website called the Mail & Guardian. You can still catch him on www.chrisroper.co.za. Thanks News24 readers - you've been a great audience. And I mean that.

Hmm. Sorry to see ya go kiddo. But seriously, what's with the mass exodus of writers from news24, I think you are the 3rd or 4th to move along - I smell a rat...

Terry Shilubane 7/29/2009 11:17:51 AM
I am getting sick of this race thing. When Whites complain it is the black people or black government's fault. When Black people complain it is the White people or white government's fault. When are we going to move forward..........let's consider facts and acknowledge where it is due not everything can be racially bleak.

Swazi 7/29/2009 11:20:33 AM
You have not convinced me one bit.The only thing I am convinced about is the fact that you might have a problem with the fact that Americans ellected a Black president.Get over it!

Theresa 7/29/2009 11:20:42 AM
The fat lady has sung. God bless her, too. Thank you for many superb columns. Go well.

Cath 7/29/2009 11:21:22 AM
We'll miss you Chris. I mean that.

Chris Roper 7/29/2009 11:21:30 AM
Sarah, no rat that I can smell. I've been offered a great job at the Mail & Guardian, and it's time for a change. I can't speak for the other writers - maybe they died or something.

Rodney Sullivan 7/29/2009 11:29:17 AM
But Chris, you're the only decent writer on News24. Hopefully News24 will shell out for another decent columnist, rather than subjecting us to more mosely/moerkyk types.

Shiza T 7/29/2009 11:30:01 AM
Haha .. its all a joke . You can stereotype , mock , racially profile and even insult "white men" but not any other demographic as its become socially acceptable . One can only use a analegy to describe this : It is not acceptable for an adult to mock a child but it is acceptable for a child to mock an adult . This is because the child is perceived to be in a subordinate role , Obama (who i really like) now finds himself in the adults role , what is interesting is to see the reaction to these kind of situations from society and Obama himself. Hopefully we'll see a turn in the plot and everyone will see each other as adults .

Signlanguage 7/29/2009 11:30:52 AM
Very writerly stuff.

Anna 7/29/2009 11:42:58 AM
Good write up Chris - Good old wonderful, powerful, don't-mess-with-me America!! Assholes!
Good luck with the new endeavour.

Krulkop 7/29/2009 11:43:30 AM
You had some very controversial comments and other quit bad. But still I enjoy it and will miss you a lot. To say the least, racial issues will be with us for generations to come. We are like two opposing poles, one positive and other negative. Sometimes it actually changes poles like what is happening to earth at this very moment!

Hendrik 7/29/2009 11:48:56 AM
No Chris, don't go! You were one of the few rational people here! (Unfair statement I know, but I was thinking of Neels Jackson of Beeld - aka "Buchanpotatoheaddisciple".) Guess I will have to start reading the M&G now...

bARTHOL 7/29/2009 11:55:40 AM
I wonder if you know all the facts, Mr Roper, surrounding why a man was apprehended for breaking into his own house. Are there no serious criminals to arrest in America ? Why did you bother to write this story?

Sammy D 7/29/2009 12:09:26 PM
Thanx for all the beautiful work you have provided us, I will be the forst to follow you M&G. Enjoy.

Dr Steve Brule 7/29/2009 12:11:02 PM
Only in Africa can you convince government officials that you can excrete Diesel out of a rock. HAHAHAHAHAH the funny thing is I'm not surprised at all. But then again most of the 1st world believes in a man walking on water and turning it into wine, so maybe stupidity is a global problem.

Mark R. 7/29/2009 12:17:10 PM
Hi Chris, I tend to agree with what Stephen said on Radio 702 this morning: if someone is THAT gullible, he deserves to be duped!
Sorry to see you go! Good luck at the M&G.

Stella 7/29/2009 12:19:00 PM
sorry to see you leave, have enjoyed your columns.

Mogauteng 7/29/2009 12:19:23 PM
What's the point of your article Chris? Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

R 7/29/2009 12:20:00 PM
Loved your work, was always a pick me up when we hit the mid week slump. Well we'll always have the archives...

sum 1 7/29/2009 12:30:24 PM
So let me get this straight a guy breaks into his own house to get keys. he gets arrested and you imediatly think obama noticed it because of race, if some 1 i knew was arrested because of that i would also say the police are stupid

Bob 7/29/2009 12:39:33 PM
Ditto

Phinah 7/29/2009 12:40:50 PM
Sometimes, one has to be just "speechless" in appreciation of a well written article. I guess, we shall read more of your stuff on the other side.

dest 7/29/2009 12:58:38 PM
Dude! good article for a change! Thanks!
Just wait for the racist comments to fly in. I bet if you were black nobody would comment.
Yeah, I agree with the previous poster.I wonder what's happening at media24, but I'm sure you'll be better off at M&G. All the best Chris.

colin 7/29/2009 12:59:51 PM
Referring to any person as being stupid do not qualify you as being a racist - the matter of the fact is that allot of white people do not accept the fact that we have a black man running the most powerful country in the world and they will use every small little thing to discredit him(OBAMAN) - another fact is that black men in the USA are being abuse on a daily basis by police men all over the USA to an extend whereby it is not even safe for a black man to take a jog in some neighborhood as they will be seen as a possible criminal - the media in the USA also portrays the black man at most of the time in a negative connotation which is racist – what is contradicting to me is that both the media and the Police in the USA wants to label OBAMA as a racist but they themselves are part of a fraternity who have for decades and generations openly contributed to the degrading of blacks in the US.

concerned! 7/29/2009 1:21:54 PM
Even if you had hidden your identity on this so called "column" of yours Chris, you truly sound like the ignorant white people i know, and believe you me i know many. Those who claim to know so much about everyone and every culture in South Africa. Those who think they can and even have written books about South African "cultures".I am still wondering what your point was to this gwab you call writing.

Clare 7/29/2009 1:23:05 PM
Hell, I'm going to miss your columns. They're definitely the best thing on News 24. I'll never forget the "Hello Kitty nipple caps and lederhosen".

Nonsense 7/29/2009 1:24:19 PM
You are writing a lot of nonsense. This article is hogwash. Lack rigorous analysis and is based on easy assumptions. You do not understand the bigger picture in this regard.

James 7/29/2009 1:28:28 PM
you have failed to come up with an intelligent argument, all I read is Black people this and that, and whites should be the ones to govern. race is a reality we have to live with, when a person rises and it's not what was expected, you criticise everything theu do. nothing stops you from achieving what Obama did in a country with a white majority as it's constituents. sadly it's only your peers who can relate, try being objective in your new job.

Karen @Terry Shilubane 7/29/2009 1:31:25 PM
I agree!! I am also soooo sick of all the racism. It is more rife now than ever before and we are supposed to be progressing - hahaha. The only progress we have made is to switch the target and demanded that he think it is fair. I have refused to get involved in AA and BEE on exactly those grounds. I have never supported racism and am not going to start now. I have never thought discrimination of any sort is fair and refuse to accept now that as long as the target of the discrmination is my own race that I should think its fair. Racism is ugly and unfair no matter who the racist is or who the target of the racism is - it should be as simple as that - but apparently it isn't. Am I missing something? Why do we not call a spade a spade and call it what it is - revenge.

Chris Roper 7/29/2009 1:40:44 PM
Thanks for the goodbyes, people. And Sum1 - when you write, 'let me get this straight', and then actually get it all bent - well, you should be in politics. Read the news, you'll get the story. And Swazi - I have no problem with America electing a black president, I have a problem with people who want to believe that American presidents can suddenly become saints because they're black. They're still American presidents - that's kind of the whole point about being elected president.

Ria 7/29/2009 1:43:03 PM
Good luck with the new adventure! Your columns will be missed.

Coll@ Karen & Terry Shilubane 7/29/2009 1:59:19 PM
Go Karen & Terry - you are the only x2 people that had any decent comment to make! Thes rest were mostly pathetic and irritating. Then again, we are all entitled to our opinion (stupid as some of them maybe :-) ). As the story goes Opinions are like A*holes - everybody has one! CHRIS - Enjoyed most of yr articles. We need someone to stir the pot sometimes - good luck at M&G!!

Michael 7/29/2009 1:59:47 PM
Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out!!!!

Rodders 7/29/2009 2:02:34 PM
Not your best column ever, old son, but the 'more is lest' rhetorical gesture more or lest made up for the rest of it!!
Sorry to see you go Chris, your column has been the one I look forward to most every week, but I certainly understand the need for change - best of luck in the new job and keep on finding the 'wit' in our political 'half wits', and punishing those who deserve it with your puns!!!

cuba - @Terry Shilubane 7/29/2009 2:05:28 PM
i'm with you mate, but i don't think this race thing will end anytime soon, chances are we would of been dead for a good few years before the world stops blaming everything on race... but we can at least lay the ground work for a less/non-racist society while we are still breathing and not pushing daisies
sorry to see you go chris, i did enjoy your columns, but hey, change is a good thing

Sarah 7/29/2009 2:13:21 PM
David Moseley was right - the abuse received while being a till operator at Shoprite is nothing compared to the abuse rained down by the commentators on the news24 forums...

louis 7/29/2009 2:19:01 PM
Anything to get to Obama? Sorry, you've just given yourself away by this sorry thing for an article!

varo 7/29/2009 2:27:27 PM
i dont understand your nonsense writen here but its realy not needed

Brandon 7/29/2009 2:31:33 PM
FACT: Racial profiling is rife in America and infact, globally. I would assume that the black Harvard professor tried to explain to the officer that he wasn't actually a burglar. I would assume that if you heard that any of your good friends was arrested while trying to get in their house, you would think the officers were stupid.Your article lacks facts Chris Roper. Why is it that when black people express their feelings towards injustices they have and are still suffering under the white hand, white people just roll their eyes. I like what Obama said - let these issues be addressed publicly so that we can let it go and move on as human beings...DAMN!

Nathi 7/29/2009 2:39:40 PM
Everytime i see a racist i see someone with fears and a an inferiority complex.Chris i am black but your article is beautiful.I am sorry to say black as i am i dont like Obama, not even a bit and i have sensed racist tendencies from him.I for one would not might having a white South African president(not Zille though) who will cater for all people along racial lines.I definitely know we have wonderful whites in this country.

Good article, sorry to see you leaving.

They are all just puppets on a string, race has nothing to do with it.

cc 7/29/2009 3:36:19 PM
By the way, Obama is not black...

allan@farmer roper 7/29/2009 3:48:40 PM
do they actually pay you for the drivel you spew out ,because he was black they arrested him for breaking him into his own home , if he was white i am sure they would have assisted him in breaking in even if he was a burglar and maybe given him a lift with all the stolen goods to the nearest pawn shop . ever heard the phrase blackman is always a suspect...spare us and join the other "writers" do not spare the rope.....

Noc 7/29/2009 3:49:56 PM
Take care Chris, hope you'll still be writing columns over at M&G - I'll be reading if you write.

Richard 7/29/2009 4:03:05 PM
Chris

What has calling a person "stupid", to do with your accucations of:
"stereotyping white police officers"
"judges people's actions based on the colour of their skin.
"pure knee jerk response to race"
against President Obama?

You seem to superimpose your own prejudices and then tactfully blend your ideas with other issues to make yourself appear liberal.

Of course there are enough readers out there with a similar mindset who are just as happy to find something to support their own biases against the Black President.

Fortunately, not everyone eats up everything "vir soetkoek".

cry 7/29/2009 4:08:04 PM
I don`t see any racism in the whole thing, you just don`t have anything to write about

Liraliwele 7/29/2009 4:08:41 PM
Good luck with your new job. I always enjoyed your articles, even though I did not always agree with you. But that is the point, after all. You did provoke our minds a lot. Will still read your articles on M&G.

Emmerson 7/29/2009 4:10:29 PM
Get over yourself. Americans voted Barack Obama last year and you still whining. You are a hypocrite. This is purely on racial lines and you know it. Swallow that pride and admit Barack Obama is doing such a wonderful job as President of the World. Hide somewhere if you cant stomach that. You are a racist yourself no matter what you say Americans voted for the best man for the job and the fact is he is BLACK.

Ahmed 7/29/2009 4:11:40 PM
Good Riddance.
Obama has some major flaws, racism not one of them.
Chris probably waited long and hard for something to critisize Obama about, I wonder who the real racist is?
Why the move to M&G?, somewhere out of SA would've been better...

Bodie 7/29/2009 4:13:39 PM
Sad, truly sad, that there are so many folks defending Obama after his gaffe'.

He should be sounding castigated for sticking his political nose where it did not belong.

The fact that he is colored or white (NOT BLACK) has nothing to do with it.

As the President he should have placed himself above such issues and accepted that the man on the ground, the same one putting his life on the line every day, was the best judge(no pun intended) of the situation at the time.

It's THAT easy.

aquahelix 7/29/2009 4:13:55 PM
I'm falling down with amazement... Oh, no wait... I'm not. Well said Fred!

johan 7/29/2009 4:16:36 PM
jip obama is a racist no matter which way you look at it.I bet if the professor was white and the cop was black, he wouldn't have said anything.

Ben 7/29/2009 4:22:31 PM
so... calling someone stupid (or their actions, excuse me) amounts to racial profiling. why, good sir, i believe that's a racist comment in itself

as fred said (right said fred? look om also being "clever" *cough* a to z *cough*), please find something useful to report on for a change

Ross 7/29/2009 4:47:43 PM
I remember seeing a video clip on Youtube some time ago, about a BLACK church minister telling ALL of America that they were stupid for electing a black president. He really got stuck into his fellow countrymen/women for voting for Obama, until he reached his final delivery, where he asked how could America think a black president would get anything right in their country, if Africa's presidents are anything to be judged against. He even said that that the legacy left behind by our beloved ex prisoner, is one of anarchy and mayhem and total disregard for criminal law. I think this is what those 'stupid' American people are worried about, that their country will go the same way as Africa, jobs for brothers and bugger the rest, I AM THE BOSS NOW!! Oh and please pass that rock, I need some Diesel. This from a BLACK minister in America, which surely cannot have anything to do with race, surely? Anyone? ANYONE??!! Or is he just a puppet of the so called white 3rd force, twice removed and never present and never ever found. Wake up people, race has nothing to do with it, but only about making normal mistakes like any other human being and sometimes saying the wrong things(not unlike Malema, but far less dangerous) The last time I checked Obama was human, wasn't he? Flawed like all of us? He got voted in, let America deal with it, same as we have to. Nice to read and write about everybody's opinions though.

chops @ Emmerson 7/29/2009 4:47:52 PM
How is Obama "president of the world"?

America only makes up 5% of the world.

mp3's mentor 7/29/2009 5:06:00 PM
Emmerson you are saying Obama is going to do wonderfull things probably only because he's US's first black president. but polls show that hes popular as a person but not for his policies... the US have the highest debt in the world approaching $60 Trillion. but because of the racial tension no1 will criticize him for fear of being called a racist. you have no idea how politics works so i'd not criticise. Obama will be as bad if not worse than bush. you can see all the bills he's passing thats creating more debt and sending inflation through the roof. Obama was picked as president way before the elections as every1 knows the average american is an idiot and can be manipulated through the media. the US is going to burn and Obama will put all the nails in the coffin as he is popular and will be allowed to do so.

Wez 7/29/2009 5:11:43 PM
Chris, I think you lost the plot on this one.

moosa abrahams 7/29/2009 5:31:12 PM
As much as I am a lover of free speech I can't help but notice that in this column, you somehow bring your pet hate to the fore (the Burka and women who wear them)

Mkhululi 7/29/2009 5:36:14 PM
Mmmm ... woman calls police and repeatedly says she is not sure whether this is a break-in or homeowner trying to get into his house. She can not describe the two men but thinks one may be Hispanic. The police reports says robbery in progress by two black men. The officer (veteran who has received "sensitivity training") finds a lone black man on the phone in the house. Even after officer sees ID he calls for more cars to come to the scene. If race was not a facter, intelligence certainly was. By the way Obama said the police "acted stupidly" not that they are stupid. As you say getting the facts right matters.

Ben 7/29/2009 5:42:35 PM
LOL @ emmerson: "president of the world"

dm 7/29/2009 5:57:27 PM
One gets arrested if one undermines the power of a policeman, point. A president's words have a far reaching impact and therefore should be carefully considered. The pres failed here by commenting before reading the facts. It seems, he lost his judgement due to certain factors?

Joan 7/29/2009 6:23:12 PM
Is he half black or half white. His mamma is miss Ann!

ex-pat 7/29/2009 6:28:44 PM
Having read the report and seen the photo of the professor I have to agree with Obama: those policemen were stupid. I don't know if Obama said they were racist, but if he did, he was right. It is a fact that black people, men in particular, are seen by US police as potential criminals far more than whites are. And I wish people would stop looking for things to say against Obama - give the man a chance! America had a dangerous idiot as its president for too long, who did immeasurable harm to the country, and Obama is only human; he can't wave a wand and instantly fix everything to everyone's satisfaction.

Cracker 7/29/2009 8:08:04 PM
Chris...your an idiot and no one is really going to miss you (except for the other idiots). Obama didn't not call the cop stupid...he said he acted stupidly (quote fox news and cnn). This is just another rant by some 3rd rate wannabe writer....

Piet 7/29/2009 8:47:20 PM
Anybody that calls a man that is 50% black and 50% white, black is stretching the truth and talking along racial lines..

Deano 7/29/2009 9:26:32 PM
Ah Chris, you forget how racism works. If a black accuses a white it is called "justice" (or if justice doesn't work it is a "misunderstanding"). If a white person accuses a black person regardless of proof or situation it is ALWAYS racism. Just one of the sad facts of life.

Jak 7/29/2009 9:58:23 PM
Remember a few years back in SA when a white male confronted an unknown trespasser hiding behind a bush at night. He fired off a warning shot into the air that in a most unfortunate freak accident deflected from a powerline and killed the baby of the black mother that trespassed. He was stereotyped by the media and government as the utmost despicable racist. Yet he was at most trying to protect his property and had no intention of putting the trespasser's life in danger and if someone was to take blame it should have been the trespassing mother putting her baby at risk.
This reminds me a bit of that incident. People tend to jump on the bandwagon (Including Obama) and lose perspective of what really happened. Sad really

Kana 7/29/2009 10:38:25 PM
I've read the police report, and the policeman wrote that he insisted on seeing ID even when he was getting convinced that the black man was a resident. He should have backed off as soon as he realized his mistake.
The professor might have over-reacted too but this could be understandable if he's experienced any police racial-profiling before. I'm not black or coloured but I'd never just step out of my door and hand over my ID to somebody claiming to be a policeman. Is that what all Americans are required to do?
Anyway, the main culprit of this stupid incident is that woman who thought her neighbour was a burglar. Didn't she recognize who he was, backpack or no...?

Nic 7/29/2009 11:03:17 PM
Listen, boet, we are fuming 'cause you're leaving. If fact, I'm so kwaad, I am sommer going to arrange your credit card people to make life hell for u. (still have the Std B one ??

Fred 7/30/2009 1:28:09 AM
Chris you obviously have done some research before writing your article. More than a lot of your critics on here. I live in the USA. One thing you have wrong thoug is that obama is black. He is 50% white 43%arab and 6% black although he himself chose to be "black" enough of that. to you all that critisize Chris on here, go and do your research about the incident. The professor is a personal friend of the president. He came back from China that evening. His door was stuck and he could not open it normally. He made a lot of noise bashing the door in and a woman neighbour called 911 because she thought it was a potential burgular. When the cops arrived and tried to talk to him to find out who he was, his answer was "I'll talk to your mamma" All he had to do was to present his id to the cop and nothing would become of it however, he saw it fit to follow the cop uotside and run his mouth at the cop. Once he stepped outside his door, the cop had full right to arrest him by US law. Also this cop is not an every day rooki. He actually teached race relations for several years to other cops. Another fact. About 80% of the USA inmates is black. Now for them beighn a minority group, it sure says something. To put it blunt, more crimes get committed bay blacks in this country than by whites. Even the black cops working with this cop said that they can't believe that he acted in the way he did because of race. The bottom line here is not that the president spoke out about this, but that he used the public stage to speak out about a situation that he did not know the facts about and furthermore he did so on public stage as president because a friend of his was involved. It's good and noble of anyone to support their friends, but first get the facts. Is he black? hell no. Although I support the president while he is in office, I sure as hell won't make the same mistake again. He has been caught in several lies and making promises that he does not keep makes him just another dishonest politician. I had may say and I stand by it and stand by what Chris said here. O and by the way Emmerson, name just 1 wonderfull thing that the president"of the world" (I thought we elected him as pres. of the USA)did for the people of the USA. He does such a wonderfull job that his ratings is dropping even faster than Jimmy Carters did back when he screwed the country up. One more thing. If this has happened in SA and a neighbour called in to report it the cops would still not have been out there to check it out. Fact . Hello CC

Owen 7/30/2009 3:25:39 AM
so what if he called the arrest "stupid", it WAS!

Robert 7/30/2009 7:36:03 AM
Um... I see all this racism talk... but all I see is someone calling someone else stupid. Insensitive perhaps, but racist, no. Oh, wait it's a white/black guy calling a black/white guy stupid... of course that's racist - NOT!

Why does everyone feel the need to jump on the racism bandwagon. Is it the only way to win an argument or make a point these days?

realist4sa 7/30/2009 8:02:04 AM
@Emmerson - As they say my friend, one racist sees another racist.. "President of the World" Ag please, are you a communist? Obama is doing his job as president of the USA, that's all! Nothing wonderful! He's a man of smart words, but nothing makes him different from any other president the USA had before. Stop with your own racist attitude my friend, you need to grow up and so does any other person who thinks the sun shines out of his/her arse! Come to think of it, I would rather be associated as a racist by another racist then at least we can be equal!

Bit-chi 7/30/2009 8:09:22 AM
Obama is part white part black, so what is he then? Must say he is a lot more intelligent and professional than the SA counterparts. Why must every problem be a racist thing? The cheetahs and tigers should then also riot because the lions are racist. They are all cats arn't they? Sorry to see you go Chris!

Loxionspear 7/30/2009 8:24:05 AM
Chris Roper go well, we need less writers like you.

Chris Roper, everyone sees the next person differently whether its colour, height, sex, education, ugliness, hairstyle, language, size of the nose, body weight etc. That is not a problem..the problem comes in when people institutionalize these differences which was done by apathereid which I believe Roper benefited tremendously from it. God created divesity in nature including human beings...that is why we have the term biodiversity. Obama stated that the Professor involed was his friend and not because he was black...I am sure there are many black people out there who get harassed by white police Obama has not said anything...I am sure Obama would have said the same even if the friend/person harassed was white.

AS an ex-cop in South Africa (yes, bad old days), I knew that there was a time to walk away. The policeman always has the high ground and can decide the nuance of a "crime". Gates was in his own house, had shown his ID. Even if he was abusive, even if he followed the cop to his car, the cop should have just left the scene, giving Gates his name and ID if necessary. That would have left Gates in the position of having to prove racism by the cop (which there was not, ar at least it does not look like it). Any subsequent action for misconduct by the cop would have been proved false as he was responding to a complaint, cleared the suspect, and walked away.

Summary - perhaps the woman who reported the suspect needs her motives examined. How can you live over the road from someone and not know them.

Does poor judgement and an ego consitute stupid action. In my book - yes.

Your articles makes no sense...I dont like Obama as I feel he is a wolf in sheeps clothing..smooth talker..charmer..whatever..but i think you missed the boat on this particular episode. I dont see how you can attach racism on his part.

Chris Roper, I really don't think Obama was responding to the situation strictly based on race. But I read that a senior officer would not have arrested Henry Louis Gates Jnr., he explained that even though a man may insult you, there is no law that a police officer may arrest him. The police officer in questioning Sergeant Jim Crowley had arrested HLG Jnr. on account of disorderly conduct, and what was needed to arrest someone on theses grounds is that it should be in a public area, Jim Crowley talked about 7 people stopping and watching the spectacle going on. Yes the professor and Harvard Graduate was at fault for overreacting, but in his circumstance, anyone who would've been locked out, would also not be on their best behaviour, especially when a police officer arrives at your home, insisting on an ID, while you have come from a long trip.

The law says the smaller the crime, the greyer the line, but in this instance I ask myself had it been a fellow white harvard graduate who was locked out of his house, and he reacted the same way, would the police officer had arrested him because he reacted in an unbecoming manner, me thinks (which is a generalisation) that the police officer would've swallowed his pride and just left, and that is why Obama (according to my thoughts) reacted the way he did.

On that instance alone, I would also like to add, that even though Obama's black, and he is seen as a "so called" saviour, it doesn't mean that he's not human. At the end of his term he may be equated to the likes of John. F. Kennedy, and Thomas Jefferson, he may well be the president that brought stability to recessional country, and may well be the peace maker to the world, but we should give him that chance.

I'll end with a statement said by an American reverand, called Al Sharpton “We're not willing to give black leaders second chances because, in most cases, we're not willing to give them first chances.”

Maybe just maybe you chris roper, do not wana give Obama his first chance...

@ Terry Shilubane. I couldn't agree more ! so glad i'm not the only one thinking like this!

Johncarlos 7/30/2009 11:23:16 AM
A person who holds a PhD from Harvard reports a burglary at his home, presumably fancy, and he's the one who gets treated like a thug....and u don't find that worthy of Obama, a friend of the professor, calling it stupid? If it was a (white) Hollywood celebrity Obama was friends with, nobody would make a big deal of his reaction

Joe 7/30/2009 5:02:15 PM
Obama questioned the actions of a police officer who arrested an old man that couldn't bench press a warm loaf of bread _ after discovering that the man truly lived at the home as he said he did. In the days that have followed, the police officer's story has unraveled and the victim's story has remained firm.
As an American who has visited and lived in South Africa, I find it unconscionable that a S.A. writer would devote such time to a overblown story two continents away. Given the volatile and sickening race relations that still exist in your country even after the fall of apartheid, you're in no position to judge any nation. Take care of home before you conduct a neighborhood watch.

Good thing you are going! This is a terrible piece, as for President Obama, he isn't like any other president and he certainly isn't racist....like you!
