Earth Hour 'an empty gesture'

2009-03-27 11:39

Colleen Figg

This Earth Hour lark planned for this coming Saturday brings the same reaction out in me as The 46664 concert does: A chance for "names" to grandstand and strut about looking earnest and committed and in this case, a way for the man in the street to salve his greedy conscience by staggering about in the dark for an hour.

I see all the celebrities and public figures in South Africa have already got their pictures on the South African Earth Hour website: politicians, ex-beauty queens, comedians, the clergy, presidents - all are intensely dedicated to this very trendy cause.

E-mails I have been receiving from all over the world indicate that a series of parties are being planned by and for those who will be participating in the blackout.

Parties where people and their friends can rock on their heels and pat one another on the back for being committed to reducing their "carbon footprint" whilst downing a few good glasses of superb red and snarfing a line or two to keep themselves amused.

Not buying it

I simply do not buy into it. As one popular News24 blogger put it:

How is the resulting power surge when the Earth switches its lights on again, going to make up for the hour of darkness, for instance? Half the world will be online in an instant, too, sharing their stories of their hour of darkness. Journalists and bloggers will be inundating the internet posting articles and participating in discussions.

I read last week that there were massive media launches and functions being held in this country alone, to draw attention to the Earth Hour and the energy these events must have used in food preparation (not to mention any other aspect of arranging such events) would surely eclipse any good the blackout might have achieved.

Some respond to my scorn by saying that even if the Earth Hour itself generates a huge burst of electricity, it will also surely point public awareness to the plight of the earth and the threat of climate change, which is after all, its primary aim.

This to me is analogous to sending an animal abuser in to work with animals as punishment, or a paedophile to work in a crèche.

Before you start shouting in outrage, let me at least draw the analogy, will you? We have been exposed to the principles of environmental awareness for a few decades already.

Those who are interested in saving and preserving the earth are doing so, in their own way, every day. Those who are not, most likely never will.

Shallow public

Earth Hour remains in my mind one of those simplistic attempts by a shallow public to pay lip service to an ideal without having to inconvenience itself too greatly.

It will generate income, too, for people like me who are and who will write articles about it, it will allow some previously high profile people who have since sunk into obscurity to appear on the world stage once again and when all is said and done, I am sure Mother Earth will raise her eyebrows in silent irony at a largely empty gesture.

Send your comments to Colleen.

Totally agree with you Colleen...you have 'soo' hit the nail on the head!

Avril 3/27/2009 12:00:24 PM
How about you, Colleen, tell your family and friends that you now longer want your birthday celebrated because it is a shallow gesture. Let's stop celebrating and observing everything and join FML.com.

Marc 3/27/2009 12:00:43 PM
I could not have said it better. It seems a very shallow and insignificant thing to do. After all, it is only a gesture, nothing more. Awareness is good, but action is better. Hell, we hardly even recycle in this country, but now we wanna feel all good because we left the lights off for a bit? Boggles me

Die Griek 3/27/2009 12:01:53 PM
Prepare yourself for some abuse. I see it coming.

THE WATCHER 3/27/2009 12:02:32 PM
Yeah...Right switch everything off so the CRIME can soar for that one hour in the DARK... AND EISHKOM ...will it handle the POER SURGE?

george 3/27/2009 12:06:21 PM
it does as much good as sixteen days of awareness against aids, abuse against women etc etc ,.. if the politicians, big business etc were serious about saving the environment or prevent aids or abuse against women , proper legislation would be inforced, proper tax breaks for business going green or even individuals ( like what a rip off eskom and solar geysers +-R24,000 for one -rebate R1,500 to R2,500)That R20,000 I shall only recover over 10 years with the +-R150pm I'll save.No thanks.

steven 3/27/2009 12:08:42 PM
It is too late anyway - we have put nature on an unstoppable course from which there is no turning back. Who is going to force China to stop building coal fired power stations that is coming online at a blinding rate? How can all the nations suddenly halve their carbon footprint? Thats what is needed at least to turn this around. If we by some miracle succeed to stop emmiting C02 it will take a long time to get out of the system. We don't have time.

anamarie 3/27/2009 12:08:57 PM
How about you then conserve energy and turn off your computer instead of typing crap like this. You make some points but are coming accross as someone seeking attention. I would gladly pull the plug on you.

James Blunt 3/27/2009 12:10:44 PM
"Those who are interested in saving and preserving the earth are doing so, in their own way, every day. Those who are not, most likely never will." - That's the exact point where you make your mistake. How can raising awareness of a good cause ever be an empty gesture? You didn't think this through did you? Maybe the taxi drivers are bugging you and now you take it out on Earth Hour.

Earthy 3/27/2009 12:11:15 PM
What is more important is whether Global warming is caused by CO2 emmissions or not. There are always conspiracy theories, but both sides of that argument are siting scientific evidence, from NASA nogal! Apparently the ave temperature have been decreasing since 2001, o no wait, that is false again. All I know is that pollution is very bad but consumers will be paying for cleaner technologes. Pros and cons. I will support meaningful drives to reduce energy consumption as it cannot last 4ever

Sam 3/27/2009 12:16:09 PM
Next we can have an hour a month, then a daily hour, the awareness that it creates especially amongst the young is awesome.

Goodness Gracious 3/27/2009 12:17:14 PM
You are so quick to claim the idea / ideal of Earth Hour is no more than paying lip service to something that will make no difference. Well then have you forgotten about the times where animal conservation needed to be taken seriously? Do you think that the global population can change its behaviour without there being publicity stunts like this? We need more optimists than pessimists like yourself. Do what you like, dont turn your lights off... be the sort of self-riteous blinkered human who aides in the deterioration of our earth. I bet you do not even recycle... because it is done by supposedly pious wannabe's? Wake up... we ALL need to make a difference!!

Jason 3/27/2009 12:18:56 PM
This is such a "South African" response - we will continue to find the negative in EVERYTHING around us. From Racism to the weather, people emigrating and now Earth Hour for goodness sake. Take a step back - and just have a look at the cause for what it is worth. I see it as a great gesture - and who knows, perhaps the start of things to come. If we dont create awareness of the problems facing the earth - how are we going make things right???

Riaz 3/27/2009 12:18:57 PM
every little bit helps - yes there will be a surge in electricity when the world switches on but in the hour that the electricty is off, this so called "empty gesture" might send a powerful message to all (including those who do not care about mother earth). So i say to all switch off at 8:30

Jason 3/27/2009 12:20:45 PM
YOU to are part of the problem wether you like it or not! So instead of dissing earth hour - why dont you do your bit? Bet you not going to bother switching your lights off - probably going to sit at home and bake or something like the loser you are!

Perspective 3/27/2009 12:21:50 PM
but if "those who are not, most likely never will", we may as well halt all environmental education since we've reached the reachable. The event may achieve nothing, like you said, but it may also induce some thought around the issues and, hopefully, impact on the way particularly young people think. It is this kind of disdain for the actions of ordinary people by 'hardcore' environmentalists that alienates the middle classes and prevents the mainstreaming of environmental concerns.

Sara 3/27/2009 12:22:12 PM
For once be positive about something! Voting is an empty gesture but at least Im still trying!

Greenie 3/27/2009 12:22:24 PM
Your article expresses the views of many people, but these are the same people who just complain and do not do anything about ANYTHING. If we all had your pathetic attitude nothing would be done about crime, corruption and the other major issues facing SA. The whole earth hour event has not been designed to save electicity for the hour the lights are off....it is a form of protest and action that increases the awareness of gloval warming...now stop complaining and get back in the kitchen

DougieB 3/27/2009 12:27:30 PM
It has for the first time created a real awarenesss for me, my family and some others I know. It has to start somewhere no matter how small and insignificant it may appear to others. How (sadly) typical of South Africans to respond with such cynicism and negativity!

Candle 3/27/2009 12:27:32 PM
Sour because you did not think of the idea, were not invited specifically to participate, feeling downright rotten with yourself and now have to take it out on somebody, something????? AWARENESS is what it's all about and yes, it has to start somewhere. Every little bit helps.

Mike Turner 3/27/2009 12:27:53 PM
Earth Hour = 1 hour of voluntary darkness, right ? Apart from the voluntary aspect, what's different from the recent Eskom blackout chaos to which South Africa was subjected?

Gary 3/27/2009 12:33:15 PM
The man in the street IS the one who is going to save the planet. Attitudes are changing - and that is what counts. No thanks to you Ms Figg.

Peter 3/27/2009 12:34:53 PM
Hi Coleen, Mostly I agree with everything you say,but awareness is a good thing and cannot be underestimated. It would be far more constructive to suggest other ways and campaigns that will achieve results than complaim about what is going to happen i.e.the parties. The government should also get on board where I live there is a recycling depot but you cannot get in there with a car as the ground is full of glass and rubbish, it would cost you a new tyre every time you visit, so I don't go there,

Martin 3/27/2009 12:35:40 PM
This isn't a real attempt at lowering emissions for an hour, everyone knows the candles etc. good be even worse for the environment, this is an attempt to create awareness and get people involved. And if it is successful it could be the start of monthly earth hours etc. Please explain to me how that can be a bad thing?!? Take off your cynical glasses and do your part, if not for yourself then do it for your grandchildren.

Bikeless 3/27/2009 12:35:46 PM
I think you should turn your pc off for good and stop trying to sound intelligent about a subject you obviously have no Clue about. I will be turning off my Lights

JENNA 3/27/2009 12:36:30 PM
STOP BEING NEGATIVE AND START BEING POSITIVE. WE HAVE ENOUGH NEGATIVITY IN OUR COUNTRY AS IT IS; WE DON'T NEED ANY MORE. I AM ALL FOR MOTHER PLANET 110%

Greenie 3/27/2009 12:37:13 PM
Colleen, I believe you are too cynical to appreciate the goal Earth Hour seeks to make. The whole point of Earth Hour it to mobilise the masses and hence, put this awareness into action, even if it is just for an hour. So what if celebrities have joined in...at least they are utilising their "fame" and influence in a positive manner. Surely your constant whining isn't helping anybody. I suggest you cleanse your mind before you try to cleanse the environment.

Sarah 3/27/2009 12:39:22 PM
Colleen, an empty gesture is better than no gesture. What other suggestions do you have that could involve a billion people in a global gesture to express concern over the state of the planet? I am waiting with bated breath.

Avril 3/27/2009 12:42:01 PM
Earth hour (for those who will switch off Saturday) will have millions of kids asking why it is happening. What a great opportunity for parents to explain to them what we have done and what we need to do to prevent it from getting worse. I mean, who is going to tell their kids to switch off their Play Stations and listen to a talk about global warning at any other time?

Werner 3/27/2009 12:43:28 PM
Relax ppl, it's Friday! The big question is what to do for an hour, without lights. Mmmm, the bedroom sounds good!

Michael 3/27/2009 12:44:13 PM
People with this kind of attitude make for a lesser world. If the celebrities, politicians, etc. had not voiced support for this, you would probably have written an article about how apathetic and inconsiderate they are towards our environment. I bet you are not going to vote next month, seeing as "it will not make a difference".

john s 3/27/2009 12:44:57 PM
it is an "awareness campaign" ms figg... it helps spread the word in the hope that it will begin to make people concious of there carbon footprint and then lead to greater activism/savings in the future. it's not particularly abt the elec it will save in that hour. more the publicity. a journey of thousand miles begins with one step.. no??? colleen get with the programme and quit spreading lame negativity - any fool can do that. this column is far emptier for its soul destroying negativity.

James 3/27/2009 12:47:05 PM
I agree with Colleen... Yes, we need awareness but don't kid yourself that we are saving anything by just swicthing off the lights? You would need to kill all power and not use torches, candles or fires as all the before mentioned add to the carbon footprint through use or manufacture. Then when it all comes on at a bang again 1 hour later, it will draw more power to get everything running then would have actually been used if everything was just left on for the hour. What's the point?

WarHammer 3/27/2009 12:50:17 PM
Colleen, you don't have to. You don't have to do anything. In fact, this effort is to create awareness amongst people like yourself, that there are actually people who care, and who practise energy conservation. We want to show, by the absence of consumption, our support. You don't have to do a single thing, and you certainly don't need to deride the efforts of those who want to make a difference.

Etienne 3/27/2009 12:51:19 PM
What's wrong with a party in the name of a noble cause? Even if you don't give the proverbial fig, Colleen, let the rest of us remain positive. As in: there's one good thing leading from the global recession - it might just save the earth in the long run.

Ghost in the Machine 3/27/2009 12:55:34 PM
You say: "Those who are interested in saving and preserving the earth are doing so, in their own way, every day. Those who are not, most likely never will." While true, perhaps Earth Hour will motivate a few more to think about their role in climate change, and make their own changes. Awareness is one key, conscience is another. If you want to complain about something pointless, try the upcoming election...

Gail 3/27/2009 12:55:37 PM
Gee Colleen are you having a bad day? Agree with James Blunt, if we had the attitude that "Those who are interested in saving and preserving the earth are doing so, in their own way, every day. Those who are not, most likely never will." then we could more or less give up on practically everything good and worth preserving right now. If just a handful of people end up being more aware and more responsible in their use of resources, then Earth Hour would have served its purpose

AJ 3/27/2009 12:58:03 PM
celebrated by governments, countries and people who really dont have the ablls to amke some MEANINGFUL change - just want to make themselves feel better for an hour. I'll be watching TV instead (and turning off my geyser AS USUSAL).

Bigbatman 3/27/2009 12:58:55 PM
I'll do this. It's better than nothing. It's a start. At least it's making people aware. Stop finding things to compain about. Jeez! Pathetic

MJS 3/27/2009 12:59:08 PM
So you want me to understand, that you'd rather stick your head in the sand and hope for the best - WE NEED THE SMALL GESTURES to start off with and then move from there - in this country we cannot expect to start with the BIG solutions if the public does not also take part in the smaller stuff. Creating AWARENESS is what this movement is about.

AJ 3/27/2009 1:00:16 PM
What exactly is this "powerful message" people are expecting to come though during this hour. You cant see anything, read anything. You'll get just as powerful a message if you closed your eyes and had a nap for an hour i.e. no message

MJS 3/27/2009 1:01:18 PM
People we should not blame Colleen for her point of view, she is part of the "out of touch"-generation. She wants to save the planet in one fell swoop, not step by step...

Bright Idea 3/27/2009 1:02:55 PM
I dare say this article proved ol' Figgy to be a bit of a banana...

The elves 3/27/2009 1:03:15 PM
If the best we can muster up this late in the game is a gesture as pathetic as Earth Hour, a tithing exercise to assuage middle-class guilt, we're in a lot of trouble. We should be joining the Earth Liberation Front and rioting in the streets, not thinking we can magically save rainforests by installing a Facebook application. The problem is that we're all lazy, scared and heavily invested in this culture of destruction. Soon, however, we won't have a choice.

witperd 3/27/2009 1:04:20 PM
Dis n klomp stront.los jou ligte aan anders word daar net weer kinders gemaak.

Natalie 3/27/2009 1:05:11 PM
Earth hour is supposed to be about the Earth. Everyone using this for publicity is totally missing the point!

cj 3/27/2009 1:06:45 PM
There will be no global power surge - time zones come into play here and it's not 8.30pm at the same time all over the world.

Jason 3/27/2009 1:07:14 PM
Amazing how these columnists become so quiet when they get a taste of their own medicine from the public. How about a response Ms Figg - you still think Earth Hour is pointless?

ruby 3/27/2009 1:11:26 PM
That 1 hour is not only about switching off lights, more people are becoming involved in it not just because of the free concerts etc.. it's about awareness, if just a few people around the world become aware of the global energy overusage and conservation, I say go for it. its better than nothing, think of how many people have been introduced to a culture of saving electricity and trying out alternative energy sources. gotta start somewhere, give it a chance please.

Amy 3/27/2009 1:11:29 PM
I think it's a great idea. Sure, the "Earth hour" itself may not have a huge impact, but it will hopefully make us all think about reducing the amount of energy we consume as individuals. We should ALL be thinking about it ALL of the time..

peet 3/27/2009 1:12:01 PM
when News24 columnists had something to write about....guess this is not one of those times.

BagManT 3/27/2009 1:12:49 PM
This article illustrates exactly what is wrong with people in the world. Did you write just to get a reaction. You have misd the point. It might be a gesture, but one of positivety and greater life for all. I find it highly disheartening that of all the subjects in the world you couldve written about, you chose the one that is trying to help the world to critisize. My advise, gain a better perspective on teh world before blattering out absolute rubbish!!!

bob 3/27/2009 1:13:26 PM
What a pathetic and narrow minded article. Guess Colleen is like many of the quick fix generation. The earth hour is about creating a consciousness so that people in the street start becoming more aware of their actions and how that may have an effect on their external environment. Its not a quick fix to undo all that has been done but at least a start.Mybe you shouldnt have that wine and a snarf before writing such baligerent BS.

andrew 3/27/2009 1:16:53 PM
Its about acknowledging there is a problem and accepting that we all have a role to play going forward.

Wahammer 3/27/2009 1:16:56 PM
Are you guys putting any of you diatribe into action? Rioting in the streets? Someone needs to explain how this will save the planet.

Bob 3/27/2009 1:17:35 PM
I am glad that I am not the only one that thinks that this whole "Earth Hour" thing is a lark.

BagManT 3/27/2009 1:18:03 PM
I hope you are not breeding, to breed this mentality into the youth would only make everything worse.

AntonDa 3/27/2009 1:23:26 PM
All things take time to get off the ground. At least there are people who are attempting to bring it to the forefront, and not just writing, and complaining, about it. Hopefully we can one day look back and say. "It all stated with a single hour".

peter 3/27/2009 1:24:44 PM
I cannot believe the ignorance of your article. Did you snarf a line or 2 or perhaps have too many glasses of wine before writing this article. You must be very bored if you dont have anything better to write or complain about. This event is about creating Awareness and no ots not going to make a sudden change but could create a shift in consciousness which could eventually lead to change. The only person that is shallow is you Colleen as you just dont seem to see the bigger picture.

Warhammer 3/27/2009 1:28:28 PM
Let's hear from the Figg. Are we still all bananas, or does finding yourself in the minority dry up the vitriol?

Yolani 3/27/2009 1:30:42 PM
Earth Hour is a good idea, and I totally understand the point Colleen makes. For one hour the lights are turned off and then after the hour everybody switches on and party away. The thing is yes it causes awareness, but why party? Why not just put off the lights and enjoy the starry sky? And why is it necessary to arrange an earth hour for people to turn off lights? Why not turn it off in any case - I do, lights only burn in my house when absolutely necessary.

CTheB 3/27/2009 1:33:38 PM
Yes, Earth Hour is an empty gesture if considered in the light of making any actual difference to one's carbon footprint. It shouldn't be about doing that through turning everything off for one hour once a year, since that simply isn't going to make enough of a difference. It is sad that people are using it to promote their public image and, indeed, those who simply turn everything back on all in one go and blog about it, etc. straight away can be argued to have missed the point entirely. Hopefully some people will realise the folly of such things during the hour they have everything turned off.

mvw 3/27/2009 1:37:50 PM
I was under the impression that we are still fighting global cooling. I have been leaving my lights on for the past few years, thought I'll get a tax incentive for saving the world from another ice age. Cannot help but wonder what the next trendy term will be for people to waste their time and resources on.

Excalibur 3/27/2009 1:37:50 PM
If that was the case then having "16 days of activism" against abuse of women and children is just as pointless, as are any of the noble "gestures". If it makes a population more aware then GREAT. If 1000 households realise that they can leave 2 lights on in the evening instead of all of them, day in and out. Wonderful. Stop being so damn cynical, this is about awareness, not saving power. TURN THEM OFF!!!!

fiona 3/27/2009 1:38:11 PM
I was wondering the same thing...but I'm still switching my lights off- because I try to do my bit wherever I can.No point ranting at you or the millions of ignoramus consumers out there who dont actually care that we are in climate crisis. We can all just do what we can to make a difference- one person at a time.

Paul 3/27/2009 1:38:18 PM
While I agree with trying to conserve energy, I can't support an event that tries to usurp God's power. There's no such thing as 'Mother Earth'! God created the planet, and one day will destroy it and replace it with another one, a perfect one. Who does mankind think 'he' is, trying to fix a God-sized problem, even if we're responsible for the mess. If everyone believed in the power of God then maybe He'd be willing to fix the problem for us, which He can do in the twinkling of an eye!!

Frank 3/27/2009 1:38:36 PM
Colleen you might have a point, but it is all about the gesture. Like saying thank you, to some a swear word, but some people are still grateful for what we have. At least someone took the initiative to make a difference! We are all aware of ?Earth Hour? its all over the media, some of us think it is fig, but millions of us are going to take part in this great effort. We must stop beating around the bush or must I say fig tree! (Thinking about it, when was the last lime you saw a fig tree... :)

Alison 3/27/2009 1:41:39 PM
I agree Colleen. The hour itself makes no difference to the amount of electricity the power stations produce - they cannot be turned on and off at will - therefore it makes no difference to the excessive use of resources. We practise on going, daily conservation of electricity and water. That practised by a large number of people will make a much more significant difference. Even more so would be if industry and commerce reduced its excesses and wastage.

MACK MYBURGH 3/27/2009 1:41:59 PM
People that buy into this never use thier Ds-tv for anything else but music, movies ect.The nature programs have for years now said maybe this is the way it happens ,yes we do contribute to it ,but not as much as the spin doctors who want to make money off it tries to convince us. WELL WRITTEN DIAMOND !

Ray 3/27/2009 1:42:09 PM
To all the goodie two shoes on this blog, I totally agree with Ms Figg. Yes, we do have time zones, but how many millions of lights do we have in one time zone? You didn't think of it that way, who ever you were with that stupid comment. Secondly, you have not yet experienced five robberies in one week at your neighbour's house, nor have you experienced a spate of violent, armed robberies in your neighbourhood lasting more than a month, now have you?

Olivia Rose-Innes, EnviroHealth Editor, Health24 3/27/2009 1:43:00 PM
The environmental crisis is a huge, messy, vastly confusing problem, to ordinary people and the world's best scientists and policy-makers too. Our attempts to rectify it are imperfect and messy, and often look and feel pointless and hypocritical. But at least they are attempts. I tend towards the cynical and pessimistic myself, but I'm working on that? because it ain't helpful. It's planetary crunch time, not time to indulge in being pseudo-sophisticatedly jaded (and, by the way, that's awfully trendy too). Of course you don't have to switch off your lights tomorrow if the idea offends you so deeply (and does it really? C'mon!). But then don't throw your hands up and disengage because you can't handle the inherent contradictions involved in the event. Do something, please, and let me know your ideas. People I've spoken to (see my piece on Health24) who're taking part tomorrow aren't twits: they know perfectly well an hour's jorl in the dark isn't going to save the world. But at least they're trying. And if we stop trying, however imperfectly, then it really is Game Over.

Wendy 3/27/2009 1:45:24 PM
You are so ready to be cynical and negative that you missed the point - its about creating awareness - no one is pretending the gesture is going to save the world.

Excalibur 3/27/2009 1:45:28 PM
Will be achieved by everyone limiting their use of non-renewable resources. Forget about Government, they will never do it. YOU .. You need to limit your demand, permanently, by using solar heating, recycling intelligently, reusing water by using bath water and rain water for toilets and irrigating your gardens. Reduce your demand, save the planet - it is s simple concept. And it starts with awareness, something that Earth Hour is trying to raise!!!. Sorry Gazza, Colleen, Bob, you are wrong.

Marlize Meyer 3/27/2009 1:45:53 PM
AWARENESS IS GOOD. BUT A HUGE AMOUNT OF AWARENESS WAS RAISED DURING THE BLACKOUTS IN CAPE TOWN A FEW YEARS AGO. PEOPLE COOKED WITH GAS, SPENT TIME WITH THEIR FAMILIES, PUT ON AN EXTRA JERSEY. BUT WHEN THE LIGHTS CAME ON, LET'S BE HONEST, HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE MADE ANY SIGNIFICANT LASTING CHANGE? AND IF SO PLEASE LET'S HEAR ABOUT IT. marlize

Greg 3/27/2009 1:46:36 PM
Too little too late-We are already past a point of no return as of today damage is still taking place and has at least a six month lag. One hour cannot help us except create awareness so that we can try and minimise the damage. Basically no one cares, the effects of our damage will hit us as quick as this financial crisis did.

Zolani 3/27/2009 1:46:50 PM
A great excuse to light the fire and braai

Alicia 3/27/2009 1:48:02 PM
You are all, those who share your views, so selfcentered. This is not about us, but about the souls who have to live in this wasteland we are going to leave behind. It is for your childrend, grandchildren and their children. You all have grave cases of tunnel vision.

michael 3/27/2009 1:48:26 PM
Hey Gary nice job the man in the street has done so far! what is going to happen to change all that? There is only one answer (to ALL of our problems not just Global Warming: "If my people who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear them from heaven, and WILL forgive their sin and WILL heal their land". 2 Chronicles 7;14. No doubt the atheists will protest with much noise!!

possum 3/27/2009 1:50:51 PM
Colleen you echo my thoughts, I'm expecting Bono or Geldorf to pop out of the woodwork any minute. I'll look out my window at 8:30 on Saturday, bet the billboard opposite my house is blazing brightly!

The elves 3/27/2009 1:50:53 PM
To whoever is reading this: it's depressing that you chose to censor my previous comment. Perhaps you should reflect a little on what YOU think is needed to fix the sorry state we've gotten ourselves into. I'll give you a clue: it really might involve monkeywrenches....and a whole lot more. I wish you the courage to reflect honestly on your convictions and then act on them.

Kale 3/27/2009 1:51:22 PM
Good article people are fickle creatures who sought after attention and empty promises (the promise to do something about the environment), but if by some small chance this encourages 1000 people in the world to do something better for the environment then that is still a victory, a small one but one none the less.

Ricky Bobby 3/27/2009 1:51:53 PM
This is getting boring, bring on the catastrophe already!! i want some excitement in my life, earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes etc etc!! come on already!!! we have been battered with this global warming for years now but it seems like our climate is changing... if we are going to be scared can it atleast be thrilling!!! Cue the hailstorm from hell already!!!

Colleen Figg 3/27/2009 1:52:25 PM
I am not fickle - do you think I would write an article and once I see a few overly emotional souls disgaree with me, I'd backpedal and change my mind? Not me! For those saying I am negative, no I am not; simply realistic.

MARLIZE MEYER 3/27/2009 1:53:31 PM
I'M READY TO JOIN THE EARTH LIBERATION FRONT.IT WOULD BE A RELEVANT AND WELCOME RELIEF FROM OUTDATED EGO POLITICS.STEP BY STEP ISN'T GOING TO WORK WHEN THE ICECAP IS AT YOUR DOORSTEP. marlize

Candle 3/27/2009 1:54:42 PM
You're ALL wrong. The world will end on Sat night. Will the last one out please switch off the lights......

Celine Dion 3/27/2009 1:55:14 PM
Colleen, it always boils down to subjectivity and how we want to interpret such an event. There are always pros and cons.

Your words: " Those who are interested in saving and preserving the earth are doing so, in their own way, every day. Those who are not, most likely never will."

Even if they never make an effort after Earth hour to be green, at least they will be more aware, which means that in the end the pro's outweigh the cons.

Earth Hour is better than nothing. b

dan 3/27/2009 2:00:22 PM
Funny, I read somewhere that the road to hell is paved with good intentions???

Why bother writing about it? 3/27/2009 2:01:15 PM
I agree, it's fairly pointless, other than raise some awareness among people who are dead against any change in their comfortable lifetyles (i.e. you), but maybe one or two of them will begin making some changes, and that's worth it. You writing this article only brings up negativity, what's the point of your article? Any more relevant than earth hour? No. Just as pointless, EXCEPT - yours is totally negative and closed-minded, earth hour is bout changing for the better. Stop whinging.

Greenie 3/27/2009 2:01:23 PM
Colleen, the only thing empty is the void directly between your ears. This has allowed your fingers to type things that your 'void' hasn't processed. If you are willing to dent your journalistics integrity by writing utter tripe, rather do it by writing opinion pieces on why you think Zuma will be a morally sound President, maybe more people will agree with you.

Rabbit 3/27/2009 2:01:42 PM
>>>you really did'nt think this through. You are getting slaughtered, Hope Mr Roper will back you up on this one, as you did on his piece, hahahahaha!!!!

Max 3/27/2009 2:01:50 PM
...make up my mind. I was at odds about whether I wanted to participate or not, but reading this made me realise how badly we need to raise awareness on the issue. I will be switching off, and you?

Richard 3/27/2009 2:04:01 PM
Sheesh, I thought I was the only one. Thanks for a great column!

SB 3/27/2009 2:04:52 PM
It's about creating awareness. We're stuffing up the planet and expect to sit back and carry on while it becomes someone else's problem. What a bunch of idiots who just don't give a Figg! My lights will be off....in fact total blackout!

Amber 3/27/2009 2:05:10 PM
I will be switching my lights off tomorrow evening at 20.30 (it might not be 20.30 in other countries, but I'm sure that they adjusted the times accordingly) and so will 72% of people who voted in the pole on the homepage. I try and preserve the environment every single day. I wont let any opportunity to make a differance pass me by. What does it matter what peoples intentions are?? I agree with Anamarie and Jason. Why do you try and suck the life out of anything positive????

cj 3/27/2009 2:09:03 PM
I was the one who made the "stupid comment" re time zones. Fact is, I was answering the concerns about a "global surge" - there will still not be one so time zones are of particular importance. Earth hour clearly states 8.30pm local time and not all the people in each zone will be switching off their lights. And I have very good knowledge of armed robberies, having been subjected to one recently where we were all badly beaten and subjected to hours of abuse. So don't tell me I don't think!

Pierre 3/27/2009 2:09:40 PM
Colleen, you make a good point but when you say "Those who are interested in saving and preserving the earth are doing so, in their own way, every day. Those who are not, most likely never will" you are lapsing into dangerous territory. Surely you believe it is possible to persuade some people to change (not only on green issues but around race, gender, sexuality and so on) - already the notion of "green" is entering into our language and consciousness. Perhaps you have some ideas....?

Martin 3/27/2009 2:09:53 PM
Welcome to the real world old girl. Stand up and do something for a change. My 3 & 6 year old kids knows about recycling and switching off things/lights that are not being used. Start somewhere!! This is a great opertunity to make the upcomming generations aware of mother Earth!!

Sandy 3/27/2009 2:14:43 PM
How many of the people who care so deeply, and are having a go at Colleen, recycle their glass bottles and newspapers? Just asking.

Marnus 3/27/2009 2:20:08 PM
Like a shining light will keep a robber at bay! LOL! Before slinging insults regarding stupid statements, double check your own shallow thoughts first mate.

Kevin 3/27/2009 2:20:09 PM
Get a life Colleen! Any iniative at improving the environment for the good, even if its just a little bit of awareness can only be good. Please feel free to ignore the initiative if it makes you feel better!!!

Jen 3/27/2009 2:20:14 PM
Ai Colleen, you always seem to see the negative side of things - even on your blog. Try and be positive sometimes. Moaning about things all the time is a tad boring. It's not being realistic, just cynical.

nigel 3/27/2009 2:20:28 PM
what a moron you are...educate yourself & switch your lights off tomorrow like those of us that care....btw your naive post has created a lot of awareness...thanks, you have unknowingly contributed to the cause...

Me 3/27/2009 2:24:41 PM
In my opinion, if you dont know by now that we are heading for a crisis, I dont think you will ever get it. I do my little bit every day, not only with power, but also water, no unecessary trip in the car etc. The people who dont give a damn will not suddenly become "aware" if we switch off for an hour. They will just as usual carry on with houses lit like Christmas trees etc I am talking out of experience with my neigbours even with Eskom crisis, every light in and outside were lit every night

Heathen 3/27/2009 2:25:05 PM
on what's on my TV at the time...

TheSmith 3/27/2009 2:25:35 PM
This initiative is about awareness and the collective realizing their potential to bring about change. The event itself does nothing to alleviate Global warming and relevant risks and doesnt claim to. Your attitude and presumptuous comment about people drinking red wine and snarfing a line or two at black out parties tells me a lot about how you like to keep yourself amused.

TheSmith 3/27/2009 2:31:31 PM
The time zone argument has been brought forward, so your power surge jibe effectively goes down the drain. Colleen, please be consequential and donate the money you are making from this article to a cause or initiative that you care about - show us how you take action. Please let us know what that is or you can of course raise your eyebrows in silent irony at this empty suggestion.

Inkblot 3/27/2009 2:31:31 PM
Earth hour a noble cause. Perhaps someday, when global awareness has filtered into the cracks of political power and the world has managed to wash away all the filth of the corrupt politicians and their over-indulgence and all the polluting whores have burned then perhaps Colleen will realize this. Perhaps not.

Olivia Rose-Innes 3/27/2009 2:32:00 PM
As we are already on the road to hell in a handbasket as it is, I'd rather have that road paved with good intentions than nothing at all. I'm not too sure if you're disagreeing with me or not though, because what I'm saying is: Let's DO something about it. Once this parlour discussion is over...

Des 3/27/2009 2:33:02 PM
People, how about switching off your lights for that hour and spending time with your family; talking; interacting and just enjoying the simpler things in life? Instead of sitting in front of the tv, playstation, cell phone?

j 3/27/2009 2:38:33 PM
Earth hour is not about saving energy, Its a stage to get people to think about saving energy. I don't think that Earth Hour was about power saving. For one the Hour we are off not the entire earth will be off only those in the time zones. The government has already stated all street lights will remain on for the safety of communters and pedestrians. The Earth Hours is so Office blocks and homes can switch off their light in recognition of the support for the cause. No a power surge won't happen

Frank II 3/27/2009 2:39:57 PM
Thanks to light pollution, the stars and galaxies have become invisible from our towns and cities. Our children doesn't know the star patterns anymore and many people have never even seen the Milky Way! Even worse, thanks to the crime wave, every house has huge bright spotlights wasting energy and they are destroying our view of the stars. Please people, get motion sensors for those security lights and only buy light fittings that shine the light downwards - NOT sideways or into the sky!

sukie 3/27/2009 2:40:05 PM
All of you can say what you want and critisize all you want, at least she got some GOOD reaction out of all you sleepy heads!! Whether its good or bad, some response hey! You go girl!

Jo 3/27/2009 2:40:23 PM
It's sad how people like to criticize the positive intention of others. I think the organizers have done a great job, creating awareness among people. If you honestly feel that earth hour is worthless, then instead of spending all your energy moaning and criticizing, why not get off your lazy bum and start your own campaign that you feel will benefit and make a difference. At least Earth Hour is doing something the best way they know how, rather than doing nothing.

John 3/27/2009 2:42:43 PM
Has anyone stopped to think the massive publiicty this article has created for EH alone...? Perhaps it was intended...?? Colleen - any comment on that...

Frank II 3/27/2009 2:43:22 PM
We won't save the planet this way but it does make it clear to everyone that we have a problem - a BIG PROBLEM and that we will have to change our ways and make sacrifices.

Zulu 3/27/2009 2:45:02 PM
Colleen, I agree, a total load of bollocks. We are going to braai and watch the night shoot in Simonstown....

Colleen figg 3/27/2009 2:45:42 PM
Pleae do not keep subjecting yourself to my 'negativity' Jen, by compulsively following my blogs and columns. Can't be good for your mental health, dear! There is a HUGE difference between negative and realistic, for your information. Think about it on your way out.

Just M 3/27/2009 2:49:53 PM
So AIDS day and breast cancer awareness week are empty gestures? If people don't know about AIDS and breast cancer by now, they never will? You probably have 1600W lights outside at the pool, lapa, gate and front door. And you leave the fridge door open when you pour a drink and you let the tap run while you brush your teeth. You make me sick.

andy 3/27/2009 2:55:45 PM
You're right, Colleen. Never mind climate change. Let's stick with IMPORTANT stuff like Jade Goody, Idols and Isidingo. Then we can tell our grandchildren that when things got tough we stayed focused on passing on a planet worth inhabiting.

Kohr-Ah 3/27/2009 3:02:00 PM
I agree. Earth Hour is nothing more than one of many knee-jerk reactions to a problem of catastrophic proportions.

Mandy 3/27/2009 3:02:08 PM
I agree with you Colleen, and while events like this do bring about a certain amount of awareness is isn't enough to save the Earth. These events with a lent-like mentality need to reinvent themselves slightly if they are to make any impression on people and on the Environment. When I was at school we celebrated "Peace Day" - everyone wore blue and white and exchanged ideas on Peace, when I got home a house in our street had been burgled. Earth Hour, bah humbug! Do something that counts.

jk 3/27/2009 3:03:22 PM
an hour... and only the lights must be switched off??? one 100-watt light bulb turned on for 1 hour uses 100 watt-hours of electricity. Well all the light bulbs in an average house consumes around 500W on average (5x100W bulbs), lets say there are close to 6million houses in SA...and say a million switch off there lights(who knows)...then the KW hours saved would be 500Megawatt hours of energy in one hour.equivalent of say 500 grocery stores.

George 3/27/2009 3:05:12 PM
I agree with you. This is such a sham. These people should be putting all their energies (pun intended) into making practical changes as everyone knows that is the only way the general public will change its ways, if its easier for them. Wake up and smell the landfills...........

Tired elder 3/27/2009 3:06:34 PM
Have already had "earth days" thanks to Eishkom and cable thieves, but if it makes poeple feel virtuous, so be it. And that in a country that bars the Dalai Llama!

darkwing 3/27/2009 3:08:58 PM
I wonder who's going to give up their cars to save the world as well. What about a 'no automobile day'? Humanity is relentlessly destroying itself and is too self-centered to care.

Al 3/27/2009 3:10:09 PM
Turning off one's lights for an hour at least raises some consciousness about power usage. An hour in the dark is always a good excuse to work on the physical aspects of one's relationship. Make love, I say ... not war against gestures that we think are futile, but are actually one battle in the war of raising awareness and making people think about things.

Christiaan 3/27/2009 3:11:50 PM
I believe a new economy is planned around global warming and carbo-footprints and that earth hour is just a way to do market research to see how many people can be lured or have already been lured into this new economy. Not that I am against protecting the environment. But this is not going to do anything towards that.

Marnus 3/27/2009 3:14:29 PM
Shame f@ggy, looks like you can't handle all the flack, going off on a reader like that! Should've thought this column through better it seems. Of ALL the replies to your column, that's the best reply YOU could come up with -- more insults? Think about that on your way to please never write dribble again!

Henk 3/27/2009 3:28:41 PM
why try to create awareness? that won't help. We ARE aware. our governments are just not DOING anything about it. Governments in the world need to stand up RIGHT now, and make this their NUMBER 1 priority. Above hunger, and disease. Else there will not be anything left of the planet, even if we make a dent in hunger and disease. Stop talking about it on years and years of Kyoko meetings, and just pass laws. Idiot politicians the world over. Obama is on the right track, but it is still to slow.

IZ 3/27/2009 3:30:33 PM
The earth has been here for millions of years and will still be here a million from now - just maybe in a changed way. All this "saving the earth" is to save people and our children. Why? In a million years there will be another species at the top of the food chain.

soraya 3/27/2009 3:31:43 PM
but i can honestly say it's making me think about other ways that i can help the environment. so yes, for me its been a good thing.

Henk 3/27/2009 3:31:51 PM
Nigel, I bet you are reading this now. You're the type that will come back to see if you got the reaction to your tantrum that you had wanted. Stop insulting Colleen because she differs from you. Idiot. (I realise the self-contradiction here, but sometimes one just NEED to call an idiot an idiot. And Nige:YOU are it!You don't get half the issue, stop claiming you have an idea what global warming or plastic in the oceans mean. And sorry:I'm moving on to another article, and won't see your reaction.

pete 3/27/2009 3:43:14 PM
Switch off your geysers for that hour. They consume far more electricity than a couple of light bulbs!!! Wonder if the criminals have anything in mind for that hour. Must be some good opportunities for them!

Capital Q 3/27/2009 3:55:05 PM
Colleen, I usually find your points a bit lacking, but this time I 100% agree with you. 'Earth hour' is a joke. If people do not yet know that there is problem then having a party or switching lights off for an hour will do nothing to convince them. Besides the fact that the real truths about global warming are be covered up behind sad excuses like 'carbon footprint tax' or 'earth hour'. whatever!

fiona 3/27/2009 3:57:32 PM
Can we get off our high horses, start saving energy, buy local, liftshare and watch what we do with our carbon footprints? Live the lifestyle, be a good example- EH is about signing the petition- get the list as long as possible. Tell your irresponsible friends about how they can help the cause. Spread the word- but dont just do token stuff- Live the lifestyle. Educate your kids.Thats the point of earth hour- not just switching off lights.

Babe 3/27/2009 4:10:24 PM
A dinner by candle light, and spend time with your partner on the patio gazing at the stars. If you are lucky emough to live in a polution free environment. We all for it and do our bit every day. I feel sorry for you Colleen. Don't you have a romantic partner?

Willow In The Wind 3/27/2009 4:14:57 PM
Colleen, you have shown your true colours. Your snipe about "a few overly emotional souls" is so typical & characteristic of anyone who is in fact opposed to environmentalists & bunny huggers. Yes, people are emotional. The planet engenders an emotional response. What exactly makes you optimistic & hopeful? You appear to be sorely lacking in both. Look back throughout history. Change happened through awareness. Could you provide us with some viable alternatives that we might all adhere to?

nhs 3/28/2009 11:08:00 AM
I think we all know what will happen in this country if lights were to be switched off, apart from a crime wave, we can only hope for eskom's sub-stations not to blow up like they did before when power gets switched back on. I'm all for saving the earth, but I don't 1 hour is enough. This is simply a marketing hoohaa.
