That old ball of yarn...

2008-05-09 08:42

Colleen Figg

My sister-in-law, who visited recently, was appalled to discover that I don't possess a sewing kit. "You don't own a sewing kit??" she said, in tones of utter incredulity. Eyes on stalks.

I thought I'd better not press the issue and tell her I've got three tops in the jolly old cupboard that I never wear because they're missing buttons or the hem's gone out.

Poor woman would have had a stroke, and to think I'm entrusted with the care of her brother, I could just hear her saying! I also didn't mention that if any sewing or darning or repairs of any kind do take place, they are done by her brother, and not by me!

I simply can't be bothered with feminine pursuits like crochet, knitting, sewing and embroidery.

Actually the fact is I don't know how to crochet, or knit, I can only do rows of plain, to make an endless scarf, and never learned to cast on and off, or to change colours midway.

So the best you'd ever get out of me was a red scarf or a grey one going on for miles until I ran out of wool or someone came to cast off for me. Whichever came first.

Drop off

Another problem was that I used to drop stitches, hence the scarf would get thinner and thinner as I approached the end, finally tapering off like some delicate lady's handkerchief corner, good only for mopping up tomato sauce or using as a leash on my cat, which I did from time to time.

At school I did some embroidery and did enjoy it, but certainly not enough to start lurking around haberdashery shops and discussing the merits of differing needle sizes with any other enthusiasts.

I also had a stab at tapestry, but that was also not really my thing; that hook and the wool set my bloody teeth on edge and I was sure that in the end people don't spend a great deal of time staring at tapestries - or at least not the people I know.

Seemed like a hell of a lot of work for very little return, really.

The thing would most likely hang on a wall for decades, collecting dust and spider webs, and once people had made suitable sounds of admiration about it, would be forgotten entirely.

No chance

This gave me to wonder just what I would have done, were I raised in Victorian society, where ladies were expected to be as adept at every domestic skill as possible, except for cooking. About the only blasted domestic skill I do have is cooking.

And that's only because I like it.

Oh, and washing the dishes; which I like as well, because of the warm soapy water and the fact that one can gaze out of the window, lost in esoteric contemplation that has nothing to do with needles and thread, or shades of cotton; or knitted booties for the neighbour's baby.

I'd be relegated below stairs, definitely.

In Victorian times, an upperclass lass like you would have had twenty servants to do all these things for you. You would have been a project leader.

.......welcome to my world, u are my cup of tea!!

Thank heavens, I thought I was abnormal. Although I can do almost all you mentioned I hate all of it with a passion and only do it because sometimes I have to. I enjoy fixing stuff though, like electical stuff, painting the house, fixing taps etc. etc. Hubby normally does the cooking and dishes, because he is totally useless when it comes to fixing anything - 2 left thumbs!

with doing things like that, though I have been known to daringly sew my own button back on!As women we were supposed to keep our hands busy with something elegant, such as embroidery, because we should not be doing something as mentally exerting as reading. If women tried to learn, they may have developed a fever, because the female was incapable!Thank the Lord for modern times!Hand me a book! Now all who embroider may do so, it is a skill after all, and those who will not will not be forced!

Nel 5/9/2008 10:31:07 AM
Thank goodness! I was always led to believe that I'm abnormal for hating ALL types of needlework! My mom had to do all those things for me from grade 1 already! (especially after I learnt some good swear words in standard 2!) At least you only drop stitches - I drop some & pick up others, so any scarf in my knitting hands, tend to zig-zag from side to side! Maybe I can start a new fashion? (that is if I can finish the scarf I started 2 years ago - I was really bored!)

When I met my boyfriend 7 years ago I was amazed when he told me that he likes knitting. It brought back horrible memories of my childhood, having to wear jerseys that my mom knitted with pride. Well...no boyfriend of mine's gonna be seen sitting on the couch doing THAT! I've made sure that I keep him soooooo busy that he doesn't have the time for knitting. Since leaving school...never worn a jersey in my life! Another great article Colleen!!! :)

LOVELY column....hehee.....I can't be bothered either...An ex of mine's mom MADE me sit down and learn to crochet one December holiday!!! Can you believe it?? I can do the button thing and if really pushed the hem thing, but that is it. I used to bribe my St.5 teacher with oranges from our farm, otherwise I would have flunked needlework...The anguish I had to go through...Naah thanks. Love cooking and doing dishes too! I feel the same about the soapy water and dreaming out of the window...

What wonderful creatures. Colleen, like all women you are simply unique. Do what makes you happy and to "dinges" with the rest. I heard this morning, that washing dishes actually takes off weight... same could be said about cooking. I sewed my life away... I make all my family's clothes, but am now strugling with a back problem...I loved it though. To each his own.

Zee 5/9/2008 11:05:01 AM
hehehe, your hubby sounds exactly like mine! He's a brilliant cook, but he doesn't even know what a radiator looks like! And I like fixing this too. Brilliant article Colleen! I can definitely relate

Kim 5/9/2008 11:06:27 AM
Let's start a "Non-Knitter/Sewer Club" Life's too short to stuff a mushroom or knit a scarf - unless its for a really good cause!

I really don't see that it is a woman thing to knit and sew. I like being able to do a button or a hem just as much as I like being able to change a wheel or mow the lawn. I would hate to have to rely on someone else to sew up some curtains for me because I am too bloody useless to do it myself. Multiskilling brings independence and I like it.

Anel 5/9/2008 12:09:37 PM
No woman is an island....It is great to ask for help once in a while! Not bloody useless....Bloody clever and very neccessary for human interaction to remain in existence. I too veer towards total self reliance and we only harm ourselves in the end.

jenny 5/9/2008 12:19:15 PM
Being a woman, I did try, honestly I did and actually CAN if I have to, but I have reached the stage in life where it is time to smell the roses and do what pleases me. I now have the names of a wonderful seamstress, caterer etc etc and my hubby has decided that rather than starve, he would become more self sufficient in the kitchen. We are both better people for it.

Thokozani 5/9/2008 12:29:12 PM
still possess the power of womanhood which is hardly what i can say for most women today. Knitting is some sort of relaxation for women, but other women have chosen to wage this battle with man by following on every footstep that men make. Women today relax by playing golf(a man's game) other drinking etc. I congratulate yours sister inlaw a tru woman in every sense as for you , keep tracking what men do but it's clear that your are chasing the wind.

charmaine 5/9/2008 12:47:03 PM
...and here's to all women who are blessed with children and get down to REAL motherhood and spending quality time with their kids.
