Good enough dog owner?

2009-05-07 09:00

Georgina Guedes

At the Exclusive Books sale earlier this year, I saw a book which claimed to be able to help readers to distinguish between being good dog owners and great dog owners.

The fact that this is the second year that I've seen this book on sale tells me something - that good dog owners don't care enough to buy a book about it and great dog owners already know they are.

I don't know where in the spectrum of greatness of dog owners I am cast, and I didn't even leaf through the book, but it did get me thinking about how to define a truly committed dog parent.

Here is a list of ten points that I feel a person should have considered and found an answer to before they take ownership of a hound, and should continue to practice throughout the relationship.

1. Dogs are pack animals

If you bring a dog into your home and your life, it will think it's a part of the family. Dogs need attention, praise and to feel included. In the absence of a pack to roam with, your dog needs to be actively involved in your life. Don't get a dog if you're going to make it spend its life in the garden, or if you don't want to make time for its needs.

2. Measure the commitment and be prepared for it

How much do vet's bills cost? If your dog gets a flea infestation, are you prepared to spend the extra time and money on de-fleaing it and your home? Dogs need to be dewormed, vaccinated and fed. If you are getting a big dog, are you really, really willing to take it for a walk every day? Will you take it on holiday with you at the end of the year or put it in a kennel? Can you afford that after you've paid the holiday bills and Christmas bonuses?

3. Consider your lifestyle

Do you have small children who will be upset by a large and boisterous dog? Do you have white carpets that will get messed by an enthusiastic and muddy puppy? If you leave the dog in the garden when you go out, do you have somewhere it can find shelter if it rains?

4. You have to be consistent

This is the first rule of successful discipline. You can't get annoyed with a big dog for jumping on the sofa if you let it when it was a puppy. If you feed it scraps from the table, you'll have a dog that watches you hopefully whenever you eat. Work out early on what it is that you expect from your dog, and what you can't live with, and then make sure that you stick to your own rules.

5. Dogs need a lot of affection

Dogs are needy beings. They like being touched, praised and included. Dogs are your companions - don't expect them to be happy with their bowl of food and role as watchdog in the front garden.

6. Dogs need grooming

Dogs with tatty, matted coats are unhappy and hot. Brush your dog - it's a treat for him and it means that your house won't perpetually be covered in his hairs. Wash your dog regularly. Some breeds need frequent grooming at a parlour while others can be hosed down in the garden when necessary. Work out what your dog needs and make sure he gets it.

7. Socialise with people and other dogs

Consider the other people and dogs in your life and start training your dog from an early age to get along with them. Even if you don't mind your dog jumping up when you get home, chances are that it will bother someone. Rather pre-empt the problem by teaching your dog good manners early on than have to deal with alienating friends who aren't dog lovers. Likewise, take your dog to your local park so that it learns how to behave around other dogs. Watch these interactions closely and guide your dog when it runs the risk of scaring its new friends away.

8. Treats for humans are not necessarily treats for dogs

Don't feed them ice-cream and chocolate. Just because you love these things doesn't make them good for dogs. And dogs only develop a taste for them if you got them hooked in the first place. If you want to show your dogs you love them, take them for a long walk or buy them a bone.

9. Don't tease

Dogs don't have a great sense of humour. They like to play and interact, but they don't understand the complexities of a laugh at their expense. Don't take away their food just to see them get hysterical. And don't play the game where you pretend to throw the ball. All that will happen is that you'll end up with a dog that looks stupidly at you when you really do throw it.

10. Enjoy your dog

If you take into account all the points I've mentioned above, and they seem more like hard work than pleasure, then you probably don't want a dog. These kinds of activities make up the majority of your interactions with your canine pet, and you should be able to get enjoyment out of their enjoyment.

Not many people consider the points above when purchasing a puppy from a pet store in a mall. When you raise a dog with love and discipline (and I don't mean smacking it on the head) they are one of the biggest joys you can ever experience. They need love and affection just as much as they need food and warmth.

    MikeF 5/7/2009 9:51:25 AM
    Some really accurate advice there.

old, female, paleface 5/7/2009 10:17:49 AM
Dogs need to be respected and socialised as part of "your" pack. They will give their lives for you willingly. They are far more intelligent than we realise. My SPCA mongrel understands me better than my family does ! She talks to me with body language, eyes, ears and tail. My soul mate adjusts her behaviour to my state of being. She 'expects' nothing and is delighted with her life. Will a human do that for you? A dog is not only man's best friend, it is his only SINCERE trustworthy friend.

    Miss Cellany 5/7/2009 10:24:13 AM
Right now my niece is sitting with a beautiful pedigreed Airedale Dog (unneutered) and living in a townhouse. These are dogs that love people and their owner and she is at work 10 hours a day. He originally had a companion (dog) and she has yielded as a result of threats to having him to obedience trained. Now she is thinking of going overseas. What will happen to this dog? So sad, he is a king of dogs IF you have grounds.

    AnimalLover 5/7/2009 10:29:09 AM
I have a lot of dogs and each one has his/her own personality, they are a lot work to keep feed groomed trips to the vet etc.. but are the best companions, watchdogs and friends that I have ever had

    Scottie Lover 5/7/2009 10:30:49 AM
Real sound advise, but it scares me to think dog owners don't know the first thing about dogs. I walk my dog regularly to nearby Delta Park, and pass probably 10 or more houses with a lonely dog in the front yard, whose only purpose in life is to bark at any and everything that passes by. It's not the dog's fault, it's always the owner's fault when they have misbehaving dogs. I think it should be made law, like in New Zealand, to take it for obedience classes and daily walks.

    Marelize 5/7/2009 10:42:16 AM
So how do you cope with the dog and baby question? My dog want to much to sit on my babies lap. And to kiss her all over. But luckily they both like the kissing game. But it is not good for my nerves. Seeing my 7 month old girl kiss my Border Collie all over, gets me turning around before I split the 2.

    Rish 5/7/2009 10:48:59 AM
Just last month I had to put my Speedy down, it was the hardest decision I had to make. She broke her leg, they managed to save it, but a month later it got infected. They gave me 2 choices, amputate and hope that it doesnt trouble her again or put her down!! I was gona go the amputation route but I was told that the best option was to put her down cos there was a chance the infection could cause her further ills later on. I am now a broken person cos I still dont know if it was the right choice

    jerrycindy 5/7/2009 10:53:05 AM
have so many "dog owners" take their animals to the SPCA simply because they cannot afford to feed it anymore. To adopt an animal is a lifetime commitment and costs (as Georgina had mentioned) is part and parcel of their lives. Don't feed dogs or cats substandard food. Would you like to eat rice crispies twice daily? If you cannot afford the expense, time, space etc. then go without.

    Ryan 5/7/2009 11:03:46 AM
Great article, I just wish more people who are thinking of getting a pooch read this before the buy one. Too many people buy a pooch, neglect it and then suddenly it is the SPCA's problem. Then they get a different breed. The lack of responsibility from some humans kills me.

    PAR 5/7/2009 11:16:41 AM
This should be read and acknowledged by all prior to purchasing a dog. Dogs will be intelegent, loving and loyal companions if treated right. I do not understand the logic of anyone buying a dog if they do not want to include it as part of their family.

    Erica 5/7/2009 11:22:34 AM
We have a 6-month-old dachshund that we drop off at my parents' house every morning before work, and they look after her all day because they are retired, and then we collect her again after work! If we have to go out at night or out of town, she sleeps over at their house! We did the same thing with our previous dachshund that we had to have put down last year (I still cry over her - R.I.P. Cleo). And also, it is very important to have your dogs spayed/neutered - too many unwanted animals.

    francois 5/7/2009 11:25:35 AM
3 dogs and a cat with me in bed at night. they love me ! most loyal friend man can have. for those who don't care about there pets . the wheel turns .

    Joy Thorpe 5/7/2009 11:32:30 AM
... Delta Park is 200 meters from my house. My landlord has the most adorable female Great Dane, but at 80 kgs, I am wondering WHO WOULD BE LEADING WHO ??? I agree that dogs are very special, loyal creatures whose love is unconditional ... all they need is love, respect, understanding ... of course it is expensive to keep them, but their love is worth so much more than that !

    Suzz 5/7/2009 11:34:30 AM
We have always grown up with dogs in our yards. But I must say that since I have my own, I pity the ones we had when i was a child. They were forgotten in the backyard. And my parents thought vets were too expensive. It's not always the best thing to get a dog for your kids, cause they won't look after them the way they should. You as the parent must still really want and love the dogs. Today my dogs are my children and no costs are spared when it comes to the health of my dogs.

    Belle 5/7/2009 11:36:53 AM
Their poor little Daxi pup sits alone outside all day and night. Last night when there was a storm outside, he cried of fear, they just ignored him. I've never heard them play with him or give him one kind word.

    Eve 5/7/2009 11:39:30 AM
My heart goes out to you. I dont even want to imagine making a decision like that about my 2 boys. All my sympathies. You did the right thing, maybe not for you, but definately for Speedy.

    Scottie Lover 5/7/2009 11:53:50 AM
The loss of a pet isn't an easy thing, let alone if it was up to you to make that choice, whether it was the right choice or not is difficult to say, but I'm sure you did it with the best intentions and spared her future pain. It also sounds like you treasured Speedy and gave her a good life, so don't stress to much. A new puppy always brings happiness to a home, not to replace Speedy, but just to bring joy, consider it. RIP Speedy

    Mark 5/7/2009 11:55:43 AM
Being a dog owner and lover, i thought your article was well written and thought provoking. Its a pity people dont think of these points when they buy a cute puppy in the window. Dogs are truly man's best friend

    Gogga 5/7/2009 12:00:32 PM
Does SA still allow pet shops to sell mammals? How barbaric. They should be limited to fish and birds!

    Amber 5/7/2009 12:09:35 PM
As a dog owner (good or great) these things were kind of obvious. We have miniature sausage dogs, and they are truly like our kids! The point we really need to get across is to spay your animals. It's extremely important!

    Amber 5/7/2009 12:13:50 PM
I am so sorry for your loss!!! I think in the long run, Speedy would probably have suffered. In my opinion (which isn't worth a lot) I think you did the right thing. Kudos to you for having the courage to do that!

    billybob 5/7/2009 12:16:34 PM
Some good points but I must admit I am getting tired of seeing people with dogs off leashes when walking in public places and steeping in doggy do, because owners are to lazy to pick it up themselves. And people should really consider their own living space before getting more than one animal or one that is large. Also Camps Bay beach should NOT be a dog beach!

    Dog/man lover 5/7/2009 12:23:30 PM
even when you replace the words 'dogs'/'dog' with 'men'/'man':)

    Sharon 5/7/2009 12:27:24 PM
I must disagree with you a bit. I adopted two collie dogs from the local animal shelter - both going to certain death. They are my babies, showered with love, affection, bones and treats (and play in a large yard). But I can't afford Eukanuba or Hills. They get standard Husky wet and dry. Should I give them back because of this?

    Catz 5/7/2009 12:29:40 PM
We do exactly the same with our dachshunds. well, they stay home during the day, but we also drop them off with our parents when we go out in the evening or when we go away for a few days (which doesn't happen much) my little girl likes to sleep on the bed, but the boy has his own basket (which he prefers) I don't know what I'd do without them!!

    Citizen X 5/7/2009 12:40:31 PM
I think having a dog adds a whole new element to ones life, and those things you mentioned aren't chores, or something that you dread doing but something that gets done with pleasure. Dogs make truly good friends.

    Skip 5/7/2009 1:11:59 PM
I have a daschund, his name is Mango. We potty trained him and all the bells and whistles of dog training at home. We got another daschund to give Mango company as We both work from 8-5pm. The problems is we didnt potty train Lula (Kalula, hehehe!) but she is better trained that Mango. He is peeing in the house and on the bed, ripping boxes to shreds etc..but Lula wakes us and goes outside everytime and is very calm and a great dog. So am i a good or bad owner? Coz this is contradictory?? Help!

    jerrycindy 5/7/2009 1:12:35 PM
As long as animals eat food with substance, it's o.k. Chewy hide bones from the petshop or the grocer is preferable to chops or chicken bones as the bones may cause splintering in the tummy at a later stage and popular to human belief, it is NOT good for their teeth. Wish there were more people in this world like you.

    Dog owner 5/7/2009 1:14:54 PM
Rish, ask yourself whether your Speedy ever went hungry? Most probably Speedy was better off than a large number of children in this country. I love my three dogs to bits and after my divorce they were the only comfort that I had. Mistreating animals is worse than mistreating children.

    Nat 5/7/2009 1:16:13 PM
    Dogs are angels from above!!

    Nikki 5/7/2009 1:21:46 PM
Excellent article. One other thing. Ensure you have your pets (dogs/cats) sterilised. In the long run they are much happier. Good luck with the new baby :-)

    Wayne 5/7/2009 1:25:19 PM
I wish I was half the person my dogs think I am.

    Amber 5/7/2009 1:40:07 PM
You're not a bad owner. We also have 2 Daschunds. I figure it's a way for Mango to mark his territory. Especially with Lula being around. You have got to get both of them spayed. It's almost as if he's trying to impress her. It's actually cute, but very annoying when they pee on the bed! Good luck, hope it helps!

    Been there 5/7/2009 1:40:07 PM
Skip, have your Mango neutered and all your problems will end.

    Erica 5/7/2009 1:53:16 PM
There's nothing like a worsie, seems a lot of commenters have them. Once you've had one you'll always get another, cannot live without them! Difficult to housetrain, but very good once taught! Ours sleeps in the bed between us, under the blankets. Now in the cold mornings we have to drag her out of bed, wrap her in a blanket for the car, then she climbs straight into bed with my dad when we drop her off! They sometimes sleep or "watch TV" in bed until noon! He takes her for a walk every afternoon

    Hayley 5/7/2009 2:05:33 PM
Having multiple dogs means they all need to establish their relations with one another in terms of 'the pack'. You don't mention whether Mango had these problems before the introduction of Lula. If not, Mango probably feels threatened by Lula and is trying to assert his authority by marking the house. You need to be consistent and remind him he is the top dog. Try not to favour your new dog in front of him either.

When God had made the earth & sky, flowers & trees, He then made all the animals & birds & bees. When His work was done no 1 was quite th same. He said I'll walk this earth of Mine & give each 1 a name. And so He travelled & everywhere He went a little creature followed Him, until it?s strength was spent. When all were named upon th earth & sky th little creature said, dear Lord there?s no name left for me. Father smiled and said, I?ve turned My own name back to front and called you dog, My friend

    Cindy 5/7/2009 3:03:21 PM
I have a basset, around a year old. He is absolutely precious and the centre of our universe. He goes to "play group" during the day at my mom's house with her 3 great danes, but he does tend to cause havock, and was being an escape artist. We have had him neutered, and the results are starting to show... but it does take time. its not an immediate fix, but a marked improvement.

    Jonathan 5/7/2009 3:14:58 PM
Heart warming posts here and as a proud pops of a Dachshund I can attest to their wonderful quirky nature. But like all dogs they need lots of attention and exercise, not to mention a warm bed. Good to see that so many people are responsible and dedicated dog owners.

The Dog Owner 5/7/2009 3:45:53 PM
I got this dog from "Danoon" ....what an expensive dog... it has a skin allergy (to think where it came from it used to eat sand and rocks)...now it can only eat "Royal Canin"...@ R904.00 X 14 kilos a month..now i gotta live with it :-( Now you still want me to buy a book... i'm the fella ..not rocker fella....

    JARC 5/7/2009 4:02:21 PM
People take note please - chocolate is potentially fatal for many small breeds. Don't go there!!

    John 5/7/2009 4:56:10 PM
If you get a dog, remember to put on an ID tag or better still, microchip your pet. Just so many dogs at the SPCA because owners didn't spend a few rand on a doggy tag. www.sapetregister.co.za
