Tingling tastebuds

2009-05-28 10:45

In the eighties, we were bombarded with advertising for Aromat, that sickly yellow, MSG loaded savoury food sprinkle.

We were encouraged not only to use the stuff, but to sprinkle it directly and liberally on our tongues, producing, the ad suggested, a pleasing "tch, tch" noise as it left the bottle.

Clearly the manufacturers have seen reason, and we haven't seen any such ads for a couple of decades now.

MSG is a food additive with a bad rap. Although FDA studies in the United States haven't found conclusive evidence that it's bad for you, they do acknowledge that it aggravates asthma and that some people are allergic to it.

I am asthmatic, and my father in law is allergic to the stuff, so in our family, we are particularly careful about avoiding foods containing MSG. It's no great loss for us. MSG doesn't taste of anything in particular; it just enhances existing flavours, in much the same way as salt does. So we use salt.

In this day and age, people are becoming more and more concerned about what they put in their bodies. FDA findings aside, people are reluctant to expose themselves to unnecessary chemicals. In light of this, food companies that care about their products and customers generally avoid including MSG.

Woolworths and Nandos are two noteworthy South African companies that have eliminated this additive from their products. Both are considered to be among our best loved brands, and produce food that is pretty universally accepted as a cut above the rest, so clearly the lack of MSG is doing them no harm.

Culinary trickery

Many restaurants, particularly Asian ones - because MSG is a common Asian food additive - clearly state that their food does not contain MSG for the peace of mind of their patrons.

Which is why I was so surprised, when I went to a Europa restaurant for lunch yesterday, to be served a side order of chips heavily coated in neon yellow powder.

My husband did a pinkie taste test, like an American TV cop sampling cocaine, and concluded that we had, in fact, been served a plate of MSG, along with a nice healthy side salad.

We called the manager over, and she was very sympathetic, but suggested that in future, we request "no Aromat" because the food preparation and presentation at the Europa chain is dictated by head office, and can't easily by changed by the branches.

I am surprised that a chain that claims to care about providing good food, made well resorts to the culinary trickery of MSG. It's a food additive that many people go out of their way to avoid - and a good marketing opportunity besides - so there's really no benefit to adding it to a meal.

But then, my brother-in-law noticed someone in his office kitchen covering their lunch with Aromat and commented in horror "but that's pure MSG"!

His colleague looked back at him, unconcerned. "What's MSG," he asked.

So, I guess that for all the people who read the fine print on labels and follow food controversy in the media, there are those who don't particularly care, as long as their tastebuds are tingling.

Georgina Guedes is a freelance journalist who loves to cook. She has an entire shelf in her kitchen devoted to flavour-enhancing spices - none of them contain MSG.

Just step away from the keyboard and go buy some shoes or something. Your allergy = your problem. Just because YOU are allergic to something doesn't make it bad for EVERYONE ELSE. Sure, it sucks to be you, but the fact that it contained MSG sure as hell don't make it bad.

MJS 5/28/2009 11:08:25 AM
You might not like it, others do ... freedom of choice!!

TB 5/28/2009 11:11:08 AM
Everything you put in your mouth is a health risk. Restaurants cannot cater for all allergic possibilities, so I suggest that if you are allergic to anything, ask before you eat or carry a bottle of anti-histamine with you. By the way, I love Aromat.

AJ 5/28/2009 11:12:50 AM
And red bull as well.

Viparo 5/28/2009 11:14:04 AM
Your father in-law aside, I think you're being petty. As you said yourself "Although FDA studies in the United States haven't found conclusive evidence that it's bad for you." Aromat tastes good, and as with everything in life, moderation is the key. As for Woolies and Nando's, I'm surprised that you can't see that it's just a marketing ploy from their side.

Marcel 5/28/2009 11:14:39 AM
Interesting article, but I'm afraid I'm one of those that doesn't care about what's in my food. And, amazingly, I'm alive and kicking. For now at least. Don't you think that in a few years they'll be telling us MSG is good for us?

Lorna 5/28/2009 11:16:01 AM
Ah Georgina, I am with you and will not give my child anything containing MSG's if I can help it but unfortunately every now and then, the urge for a soft-boiled egg, lightly coated in Black Pepper and Aromat overcomes me and I have to give in, there is just something about Aro-eggs I cant get out of my system. :-)

Eric 5/28/2009 11:21:39 AM
MSG has been found to be trigger for migrain !!! Given how many woman suffer from this, launching an awareness program should be easy??

Andre 5/28/2009 11:29:37 AM
It's just a buzzword and like sheep we all get on the bandwagon. MSG is not an allergen, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has found no evidence to suggest any long-term, serious health consequences from consuming MSG. MSG is one of the most extensively researched substances in the food supply.

Neil Kennard-Davis 5/28/2009 11:32:07 AM
More strength to your elbow! My wife is sensitive to MSG so we scrutinize lables carefully, and still sometimes get caught. I have heard that, in response to a consumer backlash, manufacturers in the USA are "hiding" MSG in Yeast Extract. The ingredients list then has Yeast Extract, but not MSG.

Marc 5/28/2009 11:32:11 AM
Georgina, it seems like nothing is ever right in restuarants, yet you still go there. I bet you still consumed half of it before calling the manager. If a patron wants something exlcuded: THEN REQUEST IT!! Surely you must expect chips will have some form of additive?? I own a restuarant and I tell brain-dead customers like these exactly what to do with themselves. And my place is thriving by the way

Anne O'nemus 5/28/2009 11:37:28 AM
What amazes me, is that as a society we are very aware of what we eat, and products are quickly removed from the shelves when it is discovered that they contain harmful ingredients, but it's still OK to inhale and blow poisonous smoke in places were innocent bystanders are harmed by it. Now where's my Aromat?

Cagenuts 5/28/2009 11:37:50 AM
msg? had to google it, sorry. Monosodium glutamate, also known as sodium glutamate and MSG.

Pierre 5/28/2009 11:39:33 AM
I love Aromat and we use it often as a substitute for salt (Not Aro-rice so much, more Aro-mielies). I'm sorry for asthmatics and MSG intolerant people, as you're missing out. We don't worry about the 'sickly' yellow colour which disappears into the lamskenkel potjie...

TonyT 5/28/2009 11:40:07 AM
I adore Aromat! Really, I throw piles of the stuff on mine (and my 2 daughters') food. Cannot imagine chips, fish or eggs without it. The whole MSG thing is so blown up. Its the swine-flu of foodstuffs.

Michael 5/28/2009 11:41:25 AM
To sum up, from wikipedia: "While many people believe that MSG is the cause of these symptoms, a statistical association has not been demonstrated under controlled." References and more on the site. MSG is safe.

shane 5/28/2009 11:43:36 AM
I share your distaste for MSG Georgina, however for me it is more a case of the restuarant which could put in more effort to supply a cayenne/salt/tumeric combination which you find at fish and chip shops and Steers for example. Everything in moderation even the much maligned MSG would seem to have very little in the way of side effects (except for asthmatics).

Heksie 5/28/2009 11:48:16 AM
Okay so you had a deadline looming and since you had not done anything yet decided to send out this as you did not need to do anything just type it up. Pointless. Stay home and eat you bland tasting overprice organice stuff.

Daniel Plainview 5/28/2009 11:48:40 AM
What are u ppl talking about, Aromaat is da bomb!!!Itsthese very same ppl that complain about MSG that smoke, drink and consume saturated fats.

CTheB 5/28/2009 11:50:37 AM
Are two chemicals that have been demonised for what appears to be no reason. What has been shown is that both have harmful effects (such as MSG's triggering of migraines) when ingested in large quantities. When they say large they're talking about grams of the stuff, far more than anyone is going to use on a serving of food. Of course, there are still questions about sustained long-term use. As for allergies, yes, it would be nice if restaurants put something in the menu or wherever that they use MSG as they might for nuts. However, effectively demanding that no restaurants use MSG because you're allergic to it is going a bit far.

L4LFC 5/28/2009 11:58:57 AM
Is there anyhting more irritating than someone harping on about how they 'only purchase organic'. This organic B.S. is quite possibly the biggest con of the century

Kel-tec 5/28/2009 12:02:44 PM
...miss Georgie A-grade. The defining property of MSG, is that it "enhances existing flavours" without needing "an entire shelf in [your] kitchen devoted to...spices". People use MSG because it is cheap. Chinese takeaways use it for the same reason. And yes, perhaps, people who use aromat put hunger before health, so dont bother to read the fine print...

blou kosie 5/28/2009 12:11:08 PM
My great grandmother lived to be 94 and ate Aromat every single day. I cant imagine eating Pizza without it. MSG- You need to eat tons of the stuff to suffer any side effects. One of my friends also avoids MSG and when I asked him why ,he couldn't come up with a good reason (he is a chemical engineer). If you are allergic (though I doubt it)- Take some allergex to the restuarant and chow away.

keith 5/28/2009 12:12:15 PM
Each individual has a different dietary requirement which is impossible to cater for at all times. Although I stay away from all the proclaimed "bad things" (sweeteners etc) all things in moderation - too much of anything is bad.

Courtney 5/28/2009 12:15:02 PM
I'm rather surprised at the amount of negative feedback. Surely everyone realises that we are putting ourselves at risk by putting unnatural substances in our bodies? The worst is the more you have, the more you want it. It's only when we eat food in it's original form, flavoured with herbs & spices that we will truly taste what we are eating. Everyone is entitled to make their own food decisions but I'm not waiting around for any authority to tell me I'm poising myself. It's not worth the risk.

Marc 5/28/2009 12:17:30 PM
Scientists have conclusive eveidence that MSG is good for you

Mickey 5/28/2009 12:20:19 PM
There is nothing like MSG. I love it. If you go to China Town in Cyrildene you can buy 500g bags of the stuff. It looks like salt. It is known as savoury powder or something like that. Everything has MSG. Steers Savoury Salt, various brands of Crisps, if people really do try stay away from MSG, it eliminates a whole whack of food from their diet. Granted, it is the less healthy stuff, but hey, you only live once. Might as well live a little.

Jimmy Jackpot 5/28/2009 12:20:45 PM

Hey Georgina, go on and have a 'slap' chips and candy floss with some tasty MSG.C'mon now...theres a good girl

Bob 5/28/2009 12:28:46 PM
consumerism. There are toxins and heavy metals in just about everything sold to us but we like living in ignorance. Parabens, SLS's in our cleaning products (which are banned in many first world countries), oestrogen in our water (giving men boobs), aluminium in our cooking pots (making us senile), etc. All of this gives us cancer, heart disease, strokes but carry on people, stuff another KFC leg down your throat when it isn't even made of real chicken!

Rodders 5/28/2009 12:39:53 PM
Cause it's found in nature too: Glutamate is a component of common foods such as milk (including breast milk), meat, fish and certain vegetables. Free (uncombined) glutamic acid and its salt, sodium glutamate, are also natural components of many foodstuffs. The body makes no distinction between 'free' and 'bound' glutamate. Glutamate exists in the 'bound' form when linked with other amino acids to form proteins. It is also found in nature in the 'free' form, not linked to protein but present in plant and animal tissues. It is 'free' glutamate which plays a role in palatability and acceptability of foods. Foods that contain high levels of glutamate include cheese, ripe tomatoes and mushrooms. The average person consumes between 10 and 20 grams of bound glutamate and one gram of free glutamate daily. http://www.foodfacts.org.za/Articles/MonosodiumGlutamate.asp

HVR 5/28/2009 12:41:23 PM
Who only eat organic, no MSG, no Tartazine etc. But drink flavoured water, Diet Colas, sugar replacement sweetners to "stay healthy". Check out studies on sweetners.

@Courtney 5/28/2009 12:42:19 PM
MSG is found naturally in a long list of foods.

Shez 5/28/2009 12:46:45 PM
We such third world people if we have to be aggressive towards someone that wants to eat healthier. Try do research on organic instead of acting like idiots.

MJS 5/28/2009 12:47:57 PM
You are forever complaining about everything ...

CTheB 5/28/2009 12:50:32 PM
That's right, all natural substances are safe. There are no poisonous plants, arsenic is fine to have any time and there's no way to have too much of anything if it's natural. And how does changing the taste of what we eat through the use of herbs and spices allow us a true tasting of what we're eating?

Trish 5/28/2009 12:55:26 PM
Found a good susbstitute for salt, msg etc. It's called Herbamare or the spicier one is Trocomare. It is more expensive but lasts a long time and is far healthier.

ps 5/28/2009 1:02:46 PM
If you need a flavour enhancer to make your food taste pleasant, maybe it's because the food you are eating is tasteless to begin with. Take a cooking lesson, you lazy-assed drones.

Lol 5/28/2009 1:03:59 PM
Seriously, life is too short to worry about MSG! There are more important things to worry about!!

Karen 5/28/2009 1:15:50 PM
We grew up on al this 'unhealthy' foods and most of us turned out ok. I hope you don't drink wine and fruit juice, it's treated with sulphar and very bad for asthma! But I do agree, maybe restaurants should be careful serving food with products containing MSG. Problem is, where do you stop, if you really start looking you'll find almost everything is bad for you (couple of years ago tomatoes gave cancer and then again help against cancer!)

CoCo 5/28/2009 1:17:16 PM
I suffer from many allergies including, nuts, dairy and eggs. But I will not aks that menus be changed to accomodate me. For instance I wont ask them to stop preparing food in a place that has traces of nuts. I really dont see why you ask them to stop using MSG. This is a Hype that sarted in the '80's. I remeber my mom stopped buying products with MSG. It has outlived Y2K, Bird Flu and Mad Cow. As for Red bull I wll keep drinking it. I love the taste.

TN 5/28/2009 1:18:49 PM
We, YOUR customers, actually pay for the diatribe that this columnist writes. do we not? (the editorial staff might like to confirm this) Quite frankly, this article would be of no use if it were printed on toilet paper... The general standard of your regular columnists has deteriorated to the point that I for one no longer read them on a daily basis - which was once the case.

bob 5/28/2009 1:31:08 PM
firstly your brother in law is wrong, Salt is the largest ingredient in Aromat! I would suggest the amount of salt added to food is worse.

Jan 5/28/2009 1:32:23 PM
I could only laugh at reading "So we use salt"... Salt is as bad for you as MSG can be. It raises blood pressure and if you eat a balanced normal diet, you have no need for it. I have been using no salt on meat for 3 years now. I am the only one in our family that doesn't have high blood pressure!!!

billy 5/28/2009 1:36:12 PM
what are you worried about a bit of MSG which in reality the serving in grams was more thanlikely so small it is harmless. I would be more worried about the deep fried chips in oil!

Ginger 5/28/2009 1:43:29 PM
You are being poisoned daily and most people either don't know or don't care.

Blase 5/28/2009 1:44:12 PM
I used to be such a big fan of this column when you were still doing the backpacking thing. But these days, you have no off the top of my head written 3 articles on food in restaurants and one list about dog owners. Please change to interesting subjects.

Everything in moderation... And there is nothing better than popcorn loaded with AROMAT!!!mmmmm leave my Aromat alone!

jbk 5/28/2009 2:01:54 PM
I get pissed off with those hippies who eat 'organic' too. I mean, ensuring the animals you eat are treated humanely and aren't pumped full of antibiotics, or that your meilies aren't causing litres of pesticides to be absorbed into the water table is, like, SO inconsiderate. Idiot.

Cynm 5/28/2009 2:10:57 PM
Last time I checked chefs around the world were all using spices(flavor enhancers) in their food. Guess those "lazy assed drones" should all go back to cooking school. I thought one used "flavor enhancers BECAUSE most foods were tasteless to start with.

Lina 5/28/2009 2:23:17 PM
you are so uninformed and ignorant about food issues, it's a shame they give you a platform to write about it. i had to chuckle about how you get on your high horse about aromat, but proudly proclaim we use salt. LOL. anyone can demonize salt just as badly as aromat. do you know how bad salt is for you? moderation is key, dear. if you are so princessy that you can't handle some aromat on chips and the aromat pisses you off more than the fact that you are eating a deepfried fat-laden object...

EffKay 5/28/2009 2:28:59 PM
http://www.bris.ac.uk/synaptic/public/basics_ch1_4.html For all the plebs defending their habits that don't know how to read this: MSG excites neural pathways (in the brain... if you have one) responsible for feelings of feeling satiated. So basically MSG dampens the feelings of feeling hungry and is a cheap way to make you feel full but actually serve you less food. Which could explain why you're always hungry an hour after eating a heavy meal at a chinese restaurant? The MSG wears off.

Carey 5/28/2009 2:36:02 PM
While I applaud your efforts towards a healthy diet, I can't help but find it ironic that you order a plate of deep fried, High GI Carbohydrates, without any guarentee that the oil it was fried in doesn't contain trans fatty acids, and then worry about the fact that they served it with MSG. Maybe they just didn't expect health-concious people to order chips?

Confucious 5/28/2009 2:45:18 PM
most of the people like yourself and your in-laws who walk around with masks and spend hours investigating if there are no MSG, MPP, PDP, ANC, or whatever in their food are the ones that gets sick the most. That is because you are actually living abnormally - think of it....

What a joke 5/28/2009 2:59:47 PM
Oh my word, everytime I hear someone say natural is good and unnatural bad, I can die. arscenic etc. is also natural!!! If you love natural products so much, go live in the bloody bush!

Kuifkop 5/28/2009 3:42:04 PM
very nice to see you all fighting over food and not the politics of the day! Keep it up, mice example for our kids

Anonymous User 5/31/2009 11:37:54 AM
Considering the fact that salt causes blocked arteries, high cholesterol, and some other issues, even though it is a natural product, Compared to Asthma... mmm, tough choice, though I will still rather go with the asthma. And I should start lobbying for all salt to be left out of food products, considering the foul method that manufacturers use the salt to increase their product sales. Similar to what a farmer does with their sheep.

LP 5/31/2009 4:36:17 PM
piere MSG lekkerte

Anonymous User 6/1/2009 8:21:07 AM
"Clearly the manufacturers have seen reason, and we haven't seen any such ads for a couple of decades now."

I'm sure there was an ad a few years ago...

AroKing 6/1/2009 2:40:12 PM
Aromat rocks my world! Everything in moderation though..

Bruce 6/8/2009 7:15:32 AM
For Shane: FYI, that spice mixture they place on our fries at Steers, contains MSG. I should know because I have 2 bottles of it at home. I'm an asthmatic but am not sensitive to MSG - so I choose to use it in moderation. To all those who malign the ingredient - it's in everything from instant soups to stock cubes, so don't lay the blame squarely on food outlets.

Michael 6/9/2009 9:03:43 AM
Blah-Blah-Blah...... Aro-Eggs! Aro-Mielies! Aro-Chips! Aro-Popcorn! (Yes, the last one isn't on the ad, but it tastes good) I've also had people go "But it's got so much MSG!!!", who cares!????? Not me.
