Proudly South African

Andrea Botha

My recent News24 column and a subsequent radio talk show explored the different aspects of South African cultures. From the responses of both readers and radio listeners, it was obvious that people are very proud of their heritage, whether they are black, coloured, Afrikaans or from any other of the many cultures of the country. We are not called the Rainbow Nation for nothing.

But what about an identity as South Africans? Is there such a thing as a South African way of life? Apart from our individual heritages, is there a South African culture - common characteristics that set South Africans apart from, say, Pakistanis or Americans? Apparently yes, if a study by the SA Human Sciences Research Council is to be believed.

Announced on Sunday, the study found that the majority of South Africans, almost 60% of us, don't believe in doing physical exercise. It's official - we are a lazy bunch.

Close to 3 000 people of all races and ages were interviewed and remarkably, it was found only 8% did anything sporty during the day - whether it was playing soccer or going for a walk. We apparently think that watching sport on TV is about the same thing as taking part in it. For a people who sometimes seem bent on showing how different we are from one another, we certainly have a few things in common:

Beer

Whether you drink Castle, Heineken, Windhoek Light, Black Label or a homebrew, all SA cultures enjoy some kind of beer. I once had a friend (over a few beers of course) go on at some length, about how you could judge people by the beer they drank. He loved his beer.

If I hadn't interrupted him at some point, I swear he would've started crying. (He liked Tafel beer, by the way). But you can hardly blame South Africans for liking their beer. South African Breweries is the second largest beer producer in the world. We consume the most beer of any African country, a fact we may or may not be proud of.

Language

South Africa has 11 official languages, the country with the second most official languages in the world. But I think we should add another language - South African.

This language would include words like bru, which can be pronounced and written either like broer, bra or even bhuti. All of our different cultures seem to make provision for calling one another brother (and sister, to a lesser extent).

Other South African words would be - lekker - pronounced either lekka, lekkuh, or lêkke as well as nooit, cool (kewl/koel), sweet (schwiet, swiet) etc.

Naughty... naughty...

Do you pay all your traffic fines? Drive while talking on your cell or maybe after a few drinks too many? Ever claimed something from insurance that wasn't technically, exactly, totally, stolen?

Corruption affects all levels of the South African economy - from government to small business owners, CEOs and company employees. A TNS Research Survey recently revealed that the same South Africans who were vocal about slamming corruption were also willing to commit corrupt acts, like buying pirated DVDs and CDs and committing traffic offences.

These may be petty crimes, but they are not pretty and seem to indicate a very ambivalent attitude towards the law in a country desperately fighting crime.

Kind, caring and compassionate

When a spate of xenophobic violence gripped the country a few weeks ago, leaving thousands homeless as winter arrived, South Africans from all walks of life stepped up.

The first people to set up soup kitchens and bring blankets were not government officials - but the churches, the mosques and a variety of community and residents associations. Ordinary South Africans who had nothing to gain and weren't trying to get any press coverage for their good deeds.

What to make of all of this? As all South Africans living in this beautiful country know, there are a few things we need to work on, regardless of which race and culture we belong to. Instead of trying to distance ourselves from others, we need to come together to help bring about the change we would like to see around us.

I don't know, bru, but I reckon I'll start with paying my TV licence.

all your facts and opinions may not be agreed upon, but a nice read nevertheless.

liesl 7/21/2008 9:57:29 AM
Good on you for finding the commonalities rather than the divisive things! such a great read for a depressing Monday morning.

irene madiba 7/21/2008 9:58:42 AM
as a nation we somehow connect in a certain way that is what differentiate south african from other countries. language ; food ; music

Anon 7/21/2008 10:02:51 AM
definitely one of the big SA things... definitely has a strong flow through-out industries, government etc, and you cannot stem the flow alone, so you go with it, and the gravy train.

Mike F 7/21/2008 10:02:54 AM
We South Africans take ourselves very serious most of the time. And we mostly focus on taking each other apart. And we are so holier than thou when it comes to issues of crime and corruption. We are a great Nation. Our diversity is our strength. We are all united in our admiration and gratitude for Nelson Mandela. Our challenge and responsibilty as South Africans is to renew Madiba's vision for our Nation and work towards becoming the people that he has sacrificed for. It is in our hands.

There's no place like home!!!

Nico 7/21/2008 10:21:17 AM
We are one country. If we get rid of all politics and idiots running places like Eishkom, this country wil be cooking (with electricity :-))

TB 7/21/2008 10:21:49 AM
Unlike Europe, America & Aus/NZ. We have much more freedom to do whatever in our daily life. Unfortunately we seem unable to take responsibility for what we do and like to blame each other for our lack of that. Maybe the Govt should "vat ons vas" like the governments in the developed countries. Believe me, they take no shit from their citizens.

Nice article. However as hard as I try not to distance myself from other cultures,I find it impossible to relate to the kindergarden mentality of the majority of S Africans.Until those in power stop thinking that they are entitled to steal, this country is heading for the rubbish dump

outandabout 7/21/2008 10:28:41 AM
A very good article. One thing I have noticed is that although South Africans tend to spend a lot of time discussing the problems of the country and their effect on ones day to day life, the minute an ?outsider? dares to criticize SA we all become fiercely patriotic. One can observe this regularly at international sport events (tri nations) and also when meeting ex-pats abroad. A South African could have been living in e.g. Helsinki for the past 10 years but ask him about South Africa or South Africans and he will tell you: we South Africans?. and our country?. All I can say is: Once a South African ? Allways a South African!

Marc 7/21/2008 10:29:41 AM
I wouldn?t be proud of S.A women though, they seem to be always whinging about something. And I do think they are over-rated. Im proudly foreign when it comes to the ladies, my days of dating SA women are over, wouldn?t waste my breath. Ive had 2 foreigners and they win hands down in all departments. Would I be considered patriotic or not??

Hi Andrea, One thing that we have in commom with World in general, is our loss of our Christian Identity, Christianity is not hating your neighbors, but loving them and tring to lift them up. We need to return to a Christianity that unites us, allows others to differ yet makes us a Christian Nation primily under God. God Bless.

expat - London 7/21/2008 10:35:20 AM
What exactly is the point of this article? Have things in SA gotten so bad that we have to read about what we truly enjoy about the country (the little that there is)?? Is this a feeble attempt to actually try to keep people in the country?? I am an Indian from DBN who sincerely misses all the Indian culture i.e. food, drinks, clubs, cars, slang etc? However, I would give that all up just to have piece of mind that I would not be held at gunpoint while walking down the street (again).

talk about south africans being compassionate using the context of xenophobic violence makes very little sense considerign that it was south africans who cared out these acts to begin with. Unless you are not considering that lot south african. I can see the catch phrase on the tourism brochure now: "Come to south africa, we'll beat you up and and probably set you alight... but hey, if you survive we'll throw in a bowl of soup and a blanket!"

kwk 7/21/2008 10:49:58 AM
From experience in driving around, watching TV, reading company memo's, observing government education policy, one could be forgiven for thinking English is the only official language, with Sotho, Xhosa, Zulu and Afrikaans being distant secondary languages that are being phased out.Scotland commemorates non official Gaelic more than we do any one of the unlucky 10 languages.Since winning the 1995 RWC, we've actually gone backwards in forging a national identity.

Ben 7/21/2008 10:55:48 AM
You're absolutely right about our culture of crime, especially the way everybody gets away with traffic violations...

outandabout 7/21/2008 10:55:54 AM
Sorry bru - I disaggree! SA has the greatest chicks on the planet! They'll gladly join you at Loftus or Wanderes, play pool, probably be able to drink you under the table and while being all that they remain the best-looking, most passionate and endearing ladies found this side of the galaxy!

Adam in London 7/21/2008 10:59:04 AM
no idea where this Marc palooka is carrying on about?! Sounds like he just wants to brag that he has been overseas- sorry marc so have a lot of people! Either way...SA women win hands down- sexy, liberal and outspoken and dont take K*k! Single and proudly South African looking for a Saffa gf this side ;)

Mary 7/21/2008 11:03:57 AM
Despite the many challenges that South Africa faces, the majority of people living in the South are kind and good, and have a lot in common. We should focus on the good people and their contributions and stop only focusing on the criminals!

nWo 7/21/2008 11:04:14 AM
Of what relevance is ur rubbish to the posting???So make South Africa a christian country hey??Christianity to unite us hey???So how do u propose we do that???Inquisitions, crusades, mass force conversions???If people dont comply we eliminate them, like previous sets of people who refused to convert....

zolani sixolo 7/21/2008 11:24:17 AM
Great article!! Wish we could have more Real South Africans who think like you, instead of those that think SA is an extension of Europe.

Graham 7/21/2008 11:29:10 AM

Kuhle in London 7/21/2008 11:47:32 AM
Right back at ya! Not at home either, and I have to say, SA men are miles ahead of the rest. There's a reason most Saffas date each other. Marc, seems you've lowered your standards.

vuyo 7/21/2008 11:47:43 AM
marc...with all the trouble and turbulations we having as a nation, the one true gift that we as a South African nation (regardless of skin color) is the most beautiful women in the world. any corner of this country boasts a bevy of good looking women, any foreigner will tell you that. our women is one true gold that we have here...look around you my brother

NT 7/21/2008 11:49:32 AM
Nice article, a refreshing read indeed!

MySA.com 7/21/2008 12:18:51 PM
All we need is uphold and maintain Mandela's vision and spirit i.e. democratic, non racial, non sexist and prosperous SA. That requires some adjustments to our individual attitude and behaviour. If we deal with our biggest enemies i.e. Crime and Corruption, RSA will prosper. Mzansi for life

Zleen 7/21/2008 12:27:22 PM
Nice read. But... Paying my SABC TV license is probably the very last thing I would ever do. It's like having to pay for a mandatory propaganda machine.
