The Great Depression

2008-03-05 08:53

Max du Preez

The wave of depression that has hit South Africans (or shall we be more precise and say mostly white South Africans) of late is increasing in intensity.

People who called themselves New South Africa patriots and swore even three months ago that they would die on South African soil are now announcing their plans to emigrate.

I'm not prone to depression. But thank you for the opportunity to announce on this forum that I am now also officially depressed about the state of our nation.

The fall of Thabo Mbeki and the rise of Jacob Zuma in Polokwane late last year did not depress me. And I was privately very sure that Zuma would be in jail before our next general election, when he was supposed to become our new president.

The Zuma-ANC's vendetta against the Scorpions alarmed me, but didn't drive me into a depression. It was reassuring to see how many ordinary South Africans were against the destruction of this crack anti-corruption unit. In any case, the Scorpions will be around long enough to see the start of the Zuma case.

Not even the Eskom catastrophe depressed me. I thought at least two responsible cabinet ministers and most of Eskom's overpaid leadership should have been fired on the spot, but I didn't think, like so many others, "oh, there we go, just like another failed African banana republic".

I was pleasantly surprised to see how citizens and businesses were prepared to adjust, and I thought the crisis was a blessing in disguise, because we were using energy at a time of climate change as if it were free and ever-lasting.

I also thought the Minister of Agriculture should have been fired on the spot when she declared recently that she would welcome the collapse of the value of agricultural land. How ignorant can a minister be about her portfolio? But it didn't really depress me. I don't have high expectations of politicians anyway.

The first sign...

As I said, I don't get depressed very easily, because I understand that there is a difference between the state of a nation and the state of a government. I don't rubbish my country and its people when I think the government of the day is useless. Oh, and I do think they are utterly useless most of the time nowadays.

The first sign that the Great Depression was going to hit me was when I heard of and then saw the Video of Shame of the University of the Free State. But I was resisting the depression, especially when the disgusting behaviour of these four idiots was roundly condemned even by conservative Afrikaner organisations like Solidariteit, the Voortrekkers, the FAK, the ATKV and the Sunday paper Rapport.

I'm afraid the depression eventually overwhelmed me when I started reading the letters on the internet and on the letters pages of newspapers of people who were saying the video wasn't all that bad. A week after the video became public the number of these letters had increased sharply.

Why don't you people rather condemn farm murders, some asked. Others pointed to the Forum of Black Journalists' exclusion of white reporters at a meeting the week before. What about all the white people who get hijacked and raped by blacks, other letters declared. Some were outraged that it was alleged the students peed in the food while really they squirted water from a bottle.

By yesterday some said there was in fact nothing wrong with the video because the black women were clearly not forced to take part. The university's policy of "forced integration" was what really should be criticised.

I checked LitNet's popular discussion forum, SêNet, last night just before writing this column. The majority of all letters on this topic published yesterday protested that the criticism of the video was unfair to whites and Afrikaners. In fact, the four video makers were the real victims, they seem to say.

So now I'm depressed. As if it's not bad enough that we have a terrible government, we now also seem to have a large number of people in our nation who find it acceptable that men in their early twenties humiliate and make fun of women the age of their mothers - women who are indeed mothers themselves, in the case of one of the cleaners, a mother of a young man who is a student at the very same university.

I am an Afrikaner of exactly the same genetic stock as these brainless clowns who made the video - Free State farming stock. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind what these men and their ilk would have done if they came upon black students abusing white, Afrikaans middle-aged mothers in this fashion.

That campus would have been bathed in blood by now.

Send your comments to Max.

I couldn't, even to myself, put in words what exactly the reason was why this incident made me ashamed of being in the same demography as these evil idiots. You did it for me. Excellent column.

Gail 3/5/2008 9:23:51 AM
Thanks Max for a great article. This whole incident brings the following quote to mind: We need not worry so much about what man descends from - it's what he descends to that shames the human race." ---Mark Twain

kolobe 3/5/2008 9:24:30 AM
I needed this from you..nothing more to add...My hat off to you sir..

LvH 3/5/2008 9:25:39 AM
If Max Du Preezz emigrated, I would be happy to contribute money for his ticket, should he needs it

Al 3/5/2008 9:26:46 AM
Mini, get something newsworthy to write about.

Mary 3/5/2008 9:27:36 AM
I totally agree with you,Max!The behaviour of those students was unacceptable and there are no excuses for their behaviour or attitudes.Respect is what is needed in South Africa. We should all learn to apologise and condemn such awful acts!

zedisdead 3/5/2008 9:27:48 AM
Get to the point man, are you condemning whites for the video, black journalists, government, eskom. I watched the video on third degree last night and yes it was a shameful act, but i dont think it warrants the media circus surrounding it at the moment, expel the students, move on. I wasnt involved in apartheid nor was I involved in four white morons making a stupid movie, stop making black people the victims and white people the oppressors, and next time you write a column make your point.

Dave Robbins 3/5/2008 9:27:57 AM
Max, I so agree with you! Politicians are as trustworthy and believable as the people who send internet "prize-winning" e-mails - what saddens me is when I see the man in the street not seeing himself accountable for his actions. The UFS Four must realise that they have badly stuffed up, and must bear the consequences of what they have done, and not now try to justify it by looking elsewhere for their "reasons".

pete 3/5/2008 9:31:07 AM
The actions of these students were a disgrace. It shames me as an Afrikaans speaking person. Somehow I'm not surprised though. The old South Africa is alive in some parts of this country. I hope the law will take its course and these fools will serve as an example to others. Well done Max.

Annalise 3/5/2008 9:31:19 AM
My hart bloei vir jou depressie Max. Miskien moet jy bietjie beet of knoffel probeer!

Manto_Zumas Revenge 3/5/2008 9:32:50 AM
The great reality of SA has sunken in! In Africa it is the SECOND decade which makes or breaks a country. Max, CODESA was a farce and the NP ran with it's tail between it's legs and capitulated to people who were trained in USSR, North Korea, Libya, Lebanon...Do you think they will forget their lessons whilst abroad? People with nothing to lose and can be swayed by populism have been the cause of the downfall of Africa: Rwanda, DRC, Liberia, Sierra Leone. M'shini wam

lad 3/5/2008 9:32:57 AM
Funny how reactions can differ. I am not depressed by the video. I think that the response and outcry has forced this type of person to think. Those students did not know right from wrong. Now they do. What does depress me is the news on this web site and on the radio. Not once off. It is every day. And for every crime we read about, there are hundreds more which are not reported. What about the young girl who was raped by 6 men in a park in Durban in front of her father?

doep 3/5/2008 9:33:20 AM
Couldn't have said it any better!

Charlie 3/5/2008 9:34:34 AM
I would ask the question: Would they make a video of their mothers doing that? I very much doubt it! It's all about respect and they didn't have any for those woman.

P.W. ISDEAD 3/5/2008 9:36:23 AM
Thanks Max, now I am also depressed. The South African (white male - is that allowed) has a attitude that they are always right and their point of view should never be questioned. I suppose it is to the credit of the National Party. Its is scary how many people feel the same way as the sentiment you mention in your article.

Camel Man 3/5/2008 9:37:08 AM
Max,your article is true and presice.I was not sure why I also was feeling rather down.I now have my answer thanks.Things will get better they say.

All good things come to an end. 3/5/2008 9:39:23 AM
We've all been through this before. But the fact remains, white people in general will be lambasted for this for enternity. No matter how many time we apologise for their behaviour you'll always get the git who blabs about how they not going to apologize for anything and so the wheel of racism, hate and blame continue to turn. I too am proudly SA'n but am now considering my options. We will never be forgiven, never be accepted no matter what. It's time to go.

olive 3/5/2008 9:41:03 AM
I nod my head in agreement with you max and shake it in despair at the ignorance and hypocrisy displayed in this county. Being neither white nor black i sit in awe and watch how race relations disintegrate. Its as if each one has waited for this opportunity to throw stones defending their race. What a waste...

Andre 3/5/2008 9:44:09 AM
How do you condem the video and ignore the senceless killings . 3 Families had memebers killed on Monday. PLEASE FOCUS on the lack of respect for human life, and the enviroment.

Chris 3/5/2008 9:44:21 AM
The only reason people are changing there views and opinions is because there is now two sides being told. Not just the one side distorted picture.I would not be seprised if this hole thing was concocted at the FBJ meeting.

Crispins 3/5/2008 9:47:59 AM
Max you are a Wop!

Nicky 3/5/2008 9:49:10 AM
Max, great article as usual and I have to agree 100%. I hate what those idiots did and do not condone it for one minute. If the roles were reversed would we accept it as a senseless prank? I think not! We are 14 yrs on and we are all still racists yet no-one will stand up and admit it. We all need help and large doses of it. Apartheid is still alive and well even if we are a "rainbow nation".

Trying to be Optimistic 3/5/2008 9:50:02 AM
Max tou've hit the nail on the head. Like you all of the happenings since December last year I have been trying to stay optimistic and not get side tracked by the masses. Who are saying that they are leaving to Australia etc. (Besides I'm sure the Aussies will put a halt to the mass influx of South Africans). But I still remain optimistic, all these changes are presenting new economic opportunities for us, and with all the guys leaving in the future more Job opportunities for the unemployed :-)

alissa 3/5/2008 9:50:05 AM
I initially thought it was an initiation ceremony, but then discovered that the women in the video were cleaning staff at the university. It seems very strange that these students should wish to humiliate women old enough to be their mothers. It shows a complete lack of respect for the dignity of others.

Hendrik 3/5/2008 9:52:23 AM
The worst of it is that we have lost the moral high ground. No longer can we, the youth, say that we did not have anything to do with Apartheid. We have no credibility left. If things (heaven forbid) goes like in Zim, the rest of the world will sit back and say, "Well remember that video, what did you expect?"

Bitterbek 3/5/2008 9:57:28 AM
Hi Max you suddenly after all get depressed by watching a video where all the participants were laughing and yoking, suggesting they were enjoying themselves at the time. I do not say it was right, but why did you/do you not get depressed where people are almost daily tortured, butchered and murdered with clear racial/ethnic undertones (I do not detect any laughter or enjoyment with the victims and their families).

Frog in heating water 3/5/2008 9:59:01 AM
There's such a racist undercurrent in SA. We can all feel it. It's like a monster lurking, and we hear it rustling in the bushes. Finally a video emerges - and this monster has a colour and a face. But let's not kid ourselves - racism is doing one thing that SA govt?s haven?t been able to get right for years - Complete impartiality to black or white. Racism camps happily on both sides of this "Fence" that our governments build higher and higher with their attempts to quell it.

Eduardo 3/5/2008 9:59:22 AM
It is a great article and you really put it in perspective by suggesting the reversal of roles in the UFS video. Those kids should be left in the middle of a township and lynched. There is not much to convince us that SA will not become another Banana Republic. Things seem to be out of control. With criminals at the helm, things are a free-for-all. Africa will never rid itself of cronyism and nepotism. Western morals are rejected because they come from the "oppressors". Let savagery reign!

joukoerman 3/5/2008 9:59:46 AM
Integration takes hundreds of years it cannot be forced, without minority rights or protected living spaces for white people we will continue to immigrate, little by little and during that process your own language and culture as an Afrikaner will unavoidably die. The video at UFS was wrong in no uncertain terms but the retaliation of threatening white students with murder and rape as have happened is worse. No if the video was made by black students insulting whites there would not have been blood as you have said, but if white people where responsible for killing one sixth as many black people as they kill whites CNN would only be reporting about SA and the world would hear how evil white people where.

Juan 3/5/2008 10:00:30 AM
Max. Yes, what the UFS students did was wrong, and it shows theire disrespect and racism towards theire elders. BUT STILL - No one got hurt or got killed. How can you (and the rest of the SA media) simply brush aside the blatant racist murders and torturing to death (of old people on farms) ? This is even more disgusting, and one-sided reporting wil eventually result in people sympathising with the 4 ufs students.

retiefdv 3/5/2008 10:03:40 AM
Yes Max, I agree. I am shocked by the response of some people who actually try to write positive stuff about that shocking video. I was also very very surprised to hear that the UFS only this started to address the segregation in their hostels. I really thought this was sorted out in 1994! The little apartheid island of the UFS is also to blame for the system they continued to perpetuate, while the rest of the country changed years ago!

JP Strauss 3/5/2008 10:04:22 AM
You say you don't get depressed by the utter collapse of the country you live in, but the actions of four students make you teary-eyed? I don't understand how that works. four people were disgraced in this incident and you feel depressed about it, but when 50 million people are disgraced, you feel nothing? Maybe it just shows your lack of character.

Alicia 3/5/2008 10:04:42 AM
Our nation is in a state and going downhill fast.. but be realistic...there always was and always will be the bullies, idiots, egits, stupid beyond words, active in our society. You and I as white Afrikaners were probably both, as were our children, victims of this evil, egged on by the parents, of white bullies. And they are amongst all the nations and tribes of SA. JZ being no. 1. It's time the small people stand up and be counted. If we can really stand together, there is hope for all of us.

Sam 3/5/2008 10:08:41 AM
I think those student should be punished for what they did, but a while back Carte Blanche had a documentary about MacDonald Chefs being caught on a hidden camera spiting at our food. I used to buy food there but as far as I can remember this documentary was swept under the carpet and I have not till today heard an apology from MacDonald?s or there Chefs.

Dave 3/5/2008 10:09:53 AM
The race tensions will not be easily solved, even by new generations of white children who have nothing to do with appartheid. I see a majority of young (5 to 18 year old)white children who are racist, and without appartheid programming, due to witnessing violent and brutal crime being committed against them and their families by mainly black perpetrators. Then there is AA which they only see as racism against them. Many of these children, affected by crime are afraid of & distrust black people.

flamby baderbuis 3/5/2008 10:10:40 AM
What is the point of this article Max? That there are still racist whites? You are indeed a visionary. Very clever...What you missed is the fact that what gross people out varies. For a lot of people, the Noord Street Mini skirt incident was ?worse? than the video. Yet, it did not make international news.

Kobus 3/5/2008 10:10:55 AM
That is exactly what I have been thinking and telling everybody from the first time I saw the video. "How would you feel if they were doing that to your mother?" And if they still think it is not that bad, I know they are racist, so I change the question to "How would you feel if the students were black and they were doing that to your mother?"

Ian 3/5/2008 10:11:06 AM
Imagine if those cowards who pour boiling water over people or burn people with hot irons could make a video of their savage actions, what would the world say then. Imagine how depressed you would be then.

JP Strauss 3/5/2008 10:11:22 AM
Didn't we give the ultimate apology when we PEACEFULLY handed over power in 1994?

RJ 3/5/2008 10:11:50 AM
I'm not an Afrikaner, but as a white person feel utterly ashamed by what the Free State "white trash" did. How can, so called educated youngsters treat another human being like that is beyond me.

dude 3/5/2008 10:11:57 AM
What excactly is the point of the article? Are you now all of a sudden depressed because of one incident committed by your fellow Afrikaner? Oh come on. The Big White South African depression has hit me a while ago, mostly because so many people I know are leaving, I fear I might be the only one left.... being an SAPS reservist and all is not even worth it anymore because I am fighting for a banana republic.

Muzi 3/5/2008 10:15:53 AM
God blessed a black man with the ability to forgive. Irrespective of what happened blood will never flow because of this and that's a guarantee. What really amazes me is the fact that these women will allow these boys to gedrade them in such a way. Why didnt they refuse to participate point blank because I dont think these boys wud have harmed them! On the other hand this is a blessing in disguise as this serves to remind people that racism is very much alive in our society.

Frog 3/5/2008 10:17:31 AM
There's a tense racist undercurrent in SA. We can all feel it. It's like a monster lurking, and we hear it rustling in the bushes. Finally a video emerges - and this monster has a colour and a face. But let's not kid ourselves - racism is doing one thing that SA haven?t been able to get right for years - Complete impartiality to black or white. Racism camps happily on both sides of this "Fence" that our governments build higher and higher with their attempts to quell it.

Godfrey 3/5/2008 10:17:53 AM
I agree with you Max,it's difficult not to be depressed these days.Just when you think things are becoming better, then something crops up.I think there are people who are hellbent on depressing us,both in government and in the broader society. We,ve got racists, criminals, corrupt politicians, incompetent govt officials, all these people contribute to our depression. But what scares me is the response of some whites about the racists video, that it's really just a joke, these are the untransformed ones.

aj 3/5/2008 10:19:46 AM
I think a lot of us are suffering from this state of mass depression. But why are we only depressed when 4 white idiots screw up in such a spectacular way. Why is it that normal, progressive and thinking (afrikaans) whites need to shoulder the responsibility for the actions of these inland, backward morons. I see no similar responsibility being taken by any other group for the actions of the bad apples among them.

padkos 3/5/2008 10:24:36 AM
They should just punish the 4 idiots, so that this can end now. But also the comments made to kill and rape white woman, must also taken serious. African history has shown us every time people get angry, people die, and things get destroyed.

David 3/5/2008 10:24:39 AM
The problem i feel is that the more crazy our leaders in the country become the more we will see these kinds of incidents. There are no morals left in our country the very people who are meant to be setting an example of how to act and conduct oneself (our leaders) are all a bunch of idiots and criminals. This mentality will filter down into the fabric of our society. Its a shame, but i feel its unavoidable.

Draco 3/5/2008 10:24:40 AM
I'm not ashamed for anything. I don't condone violence or humiliating anyone. These 4 idiots should be expelled, nothing more, nothing less. But to point the finger at all whites or all Afrikaaners for this is just as racist as pointing the finger at all blacks bcause a small percentage of them are violent criminals. Everyone from politicians to the average person needs to stop playing the race card and get on with trying to make SA the great country it has the potential to be.

Buzi 3/5/2008 10:27:47 AM
What if those cleaners were white and not black? They seemed to be having fun while they were doing this and were laughing all the time, it never seemed that they were unhappy or forced to do these thing? They obviously knew it was all a game, or else they would've protested against doing it at least. If those were white middle-aged women doing the same thing everyone would've said that they were fun loving people up for a challenge. But when white people do something to black people it's racism?

johan 3/5/2008 10:28:21 AM
Your letter started quite interesting and I thought at last, someone will put the black on white barbaric attacks into perspective. But no, Max is too afraid to say anything about this, because this video is much more violent, barbaric, etc. The brutal attacks on whites is not that important. Be depressed, be very depressed, for soon some black person will kill you and your family.

Gideon 3/5/2008 10:30:19 AM
I became depressed when when I read that the UFS video depressed Mr. du Preez more than the the murder of approximately 50 people a day and the rape of approximately 147 woman and children a day...Max du Preez is a excellent politician.

Deon Botha 3/5/2008 10:33:44 AM
Max, I agree with your article. But i think the media are a bunch of sensationalists. There is far more worse things happening in this country accross the devide on a daily basis. Kids being murdered, raped, people being brutally killed or mamed. If one kid is murdered in the UK it is huge and I mean huge. Non stop for weeks. Here if anybody is killed it is a non event. I really think that this UFS issue is a non event that could have been dealt with off the radar.

Muzi 3/5/2008 10:35:56 AM
Racism is immortal. It is a demon that is passed from generation to generation whether u were born pre or post 94. God will judge those who allow themselves to be used by this demon. I belive there are a lot of white people who are colour blind but unfortunately then there are those including the four boys that will continue to give the white race a bad name.

Godfrey 3/5/2008 10:38:09 AM
How did they get into the university? But out of all of this i commend the many white people who condemmed this evil act, i also commend black people who condem violence against whites. There are decent people on both sides.

Doorboot 3/5/2008 10:40:31 AM
The problem is that Afrikaners are feeling marginalised and feel obliged to make counter arguments when we stuff up. It does not make either situation right. Farm murders are a huge problem that is ignored, but so is white racism. By the way the thought of leaving is also messing with me.

Colleen 3/5/2008 10:40:52 AM
I must have watched the wrong video as the one I saw on Sunday Times website showed everyone laughing, and having a real giggle and no one forcing anyone to do anything. That aside, whatever the underlying motive, I fail to see how the behavior of a few white students can be representative of a whole nation of white people. In that case, should we be labelling all black people as highjackers, murderers and thieves because those crimes are committed predominantly by blacks in this country?i

zeus 3/5/2008 10:41:49 AM
What amazes me is the fact that this isolated case of human humiliation, yes, that's all it was, is focused on. The fact that this is actually what makes you depressed and not the forementioned topics, gets me depressed. Were anyone hurt, killed, raped or stolen from? No. They played along, were not forced into doing anything against their will. I do not condone this behaviour, but there are more serious and sick things happening on a regular basis, repeatedly. Punish them and get over it!

Igor 3/5/2008 10:43:27 AM
Racism is present in South Africa. Its impossible to ignore the FACT that is black- on white crime. Revenge for the apartheid past, perhaps? Every time something like this video surfaces, the whole country cries Wolf, but everybody ignores the obvious and blatantly racially motivated violent crimes committed in the white suburbs and farming communities. I condemn the actions of the four white students in the video. But there are far worse crimes being committed as we speak.

leaving 3/5/2008 10:43:56 AM
I agree with you sir. It's disgusting and shameful that blatant racism is not only increasing sharply among a new generation of degenerates, but that it is being condoned and excused becasue "black people do bad things too" - its stupid and low. it's also unfortunate that some people believe that all white people teach their kids to hate, kill and be a***holes. Please note: we are not all the same. and we also want to take a stand against hate crimes - skielik & ufs are both hate crimes

Vuvusela 3/5/2008 10:44:27 AM
Those fools thought they made an excellent video on what new South Africans would need to tolerate should they want to integrate. They did not consider that the real issue is transformation. They could shoot video footage at any of the other uni's that transformed and show the increase in garbage, decrease in the learning ethic, increased lack of morals standards etc. etc. The journalists are defending their lack of getting a view from the other side.

colin 3/5/2008 10:44:49 AM
Blacks have never condoned the killing of whites in any way; in fact we do feel your pain and agree that this is an injustice which needs to be addressed. Blacks are also killed hijacked and tortured by the same criminals ? I believe that theses criminals have no regard for skin colour and act indiscriminately. We as black will never ever justify the senseless murder or rape of any person in this country ? why should whites believe that they have the right to justify the racist actions of any other white person. Wrong is wrong and right is right finish and klaar.

S 3/5/2008 10:46:04 AM
Lad at 9:32 asks a pertinent question. Hundreds of shocking crime stories that are not made such a fuss about. Are you depressed about those, Max, or do you not want to upset the ANC by venting your disgust at on-going crime in the country?

Peter Ferreira 3/5/2008 10:46:14 AM
I agree with you my brother. Yes, we have black on white crime, we have white on black racism. We have so much black on black crime that is not reported because it does not sell. The vast moderate majority of us of all colours, must stick together. forgive each other, fight the evil together, and remember, as you do unto the least of my brothers ,so you do unto Me.

Dr.Phil 3/5/2008 10:48:31 AM
I am a next generation 'Afrikaner'.I have children @ school and have benefited from a prejudicial government in the late seventies/eighties.I have seen the Boerkinders @ work before. They are also called boelies, but I used to call them Idiots.Max du Preez, you are hitting the nails right into the Idiots'skulls andthey don't like that.As long as these Boerkinders get away with it, there will be murders/rapes etc.We/I strongly condemn it,we should realise 99% of its birth is in Apartheid.

Benzo 3/5/2008 10:49:38 AM
I am surprised that the utterances of four students depress you and not so much all the bugger ups of SA officials who failed to alleviate those feelings by their continued race related decision making. Instead they fuel those feelings and cry "baby" when it surfaces. Every body outside South Africa knows that "social re-engineering" takes time and careful manoeuvring, not just legislation. It is commonly called "change management". Not so the ANC and its officials. The film is just one symptom of a general irritation with people of all races with the ANC Government. Surprisingly, all these things do not depress you. A little like getting irritated when your roof falls on your head but not when you see the people stealing the pillars that hold your roof.

Anon 3/5/2008 10:51:28 AM
Well said!

Mark 3/5/2008 10:51:58 AM
Want an example? Some neighbours in my complex made a lot of noise. So I asked each one to be more considerate. First I spoke to him, then wrote a friendly letter, then if needed, a more stern letter. Guess what? The white ones either bettered their ways, or at worst, ignored me. But my black neighbour came to my door, started shouting, swearing and threatening, and told me that I was the actual problem, because I'm (you guessed it) a racist. How's that - HE makes the noise, but I'M a racist!

Deon 3/5/2008 10:53:53 AM
As an Afrikaner I think it is totally disgusting what those four boys did. The fact that there are a lot of people saying it wasn't so bad or look at the farm murders is just a symptom of the many old and new hurts in SA that are not being addressed and are allowed to fester. But I don't for one minute believe that there are any normal Afrikaners who would condone embarrassing and humiliating old ladies - it doesn't exist in our culture either.

Realist2 3/5/2008 10:55:25 AM
You know Max, I felt exactly like you when Zuma became president of the ANC, however issues like this (including the 6 year old girl) forces one to think that maybe transformation must be forced in order to get more blacks into jobs and hopefully this will spurn economic growth. I cannot help but to think, maybe Zuma will assist SA to force us to transform.

White Afrikaner Male 3/5/2008 10:56:41 AM
If you have no responsibility for apartheid (I don't), don't let misplaced nostalgia for the patch of soil you were born on keep you there. No point staying somewhere where people will never let you forget something you did not do, take part in, condone, and even protest against, but instead discriminate against you and blame you on the basis of your skin color. Sound familiar? Moved to Australia 4 years ago, still no regrets, happier every day that I did.

joh 3/5/2008 10:57:28 AM
Max I have never really appreciated you. This has not changed. I really wish for the day when we can look at an incident like this and say "how can anyone be so disrespectful to another person. And for that they should put on church square to be disrespected" - no matter what the colour of the skin. Until then I will be depressed with my country that I will never leave.

Gatvol Afrikaner 3/5/2008 11:01:13 AM
The 4 students didn't become disrespectful racists by themselves. I blame their parents, environment and low IQ's. Teens and young adults are becoming increasingly aggressive and I say bring lyfstraf terug!

Willem 3/5/2008 11:01:25 AM
I am also an Afrikaner. The video made me ashamed to be an Afrikaner. However, after being condemned by all Afrikaans organisations, it seemed that it was an isolated incident by four offtrack students. I could find peace in saying: "Ons is nie almal so nie." However, the seemingly huge support that the 4 individuals are getting from fellow Afrikaans speaking people makes me wonder? "Ons is almal so!" However, I trust that Afrikaners can rise above this incident and live a life integrity.

Dylan 3/5/2008 11:04:29 AM
This group of young men that are privileged to have the resources, advantage and opportunity to be at a tertiary institution, have gravely missed out on seeing what a luxury all that is. Shame on them. Shame on the spaces they wasted in those classrooms where people who want to improve their lives could have sat, ditto the dorms where they slept where students used to living with entire families - all 4 generations in one room could have slept. Shame! I'm white and 30 and not leaving.

Phumba 3/5/2008 11:06:36 AM
What they (and the Skielik community shooter) did was unforgivable. Did it justify all the media attention - no. The excessive media coverage on isolated acts of racism only increases the tension between black and white. Just read the plakards branded by the protesters, count the race motivated farm murders and you realize racism is very much alive and well in this country. White on black racism is just not as newsworthy.

2 minds 3/5/2008 11:07:12 AM
Jackass is an idiotic series of movies with a lot of youngsters pulling pranks on anyone and everyone. In most cases causing serious bodily harm and pain. This is not an isolated South African incident but a younger generation stupidity prank that does not deserve the attention given. This is why the youngsters cannot comprehend what the fuss is about because we the public have misunderstood the intensions of the DVD. Not racist but younger generation, easy target stupidity. hope you feel better

colin 3/5/2008 11:08:11 AM
The handover of power was not given - people died for this freedom so do not make as if the white led government was accommodated in this regard as they had no other choice. You as white South African should be thankful to the ANC for being willing at the time to negotiate a peaceful handover otherwise civil war would have been the result.

Johan 3/5/2008 11:08:49 AM
Max, I condemn what these idiots did. They should have thought about the consequences and should be held accountible for their actions. But so also, must the gov and CEO's be held accountible for the power crisis, crime, education and healthcare in this country. The problem is: THERE IS NO ACCOUNTIBILITY!!! Instead of the CEO of Eskom and our Minister of Minerals and Energy's heads axed, they are patted on the back and told hat it is OK?

Student 3/5/2008 11:11:43 AM
Did you guys not read the article. Max's focus at the end of the day, wasn't about black or white or initiation traditions and he probably does not condone crime. What he does point out is that these young boys had no respect for elders. And he was asking...What if it was black students making fun of white grandma's from old age homes? Would you guys still think the video was innocent and simply tradition?

Johan 3/5/2008 11:12:32 AM
They still earn enourmous amounts of money for costing SA MILLIONS a day in loss of income. Does that make any sense to you? We allow our Borders to be crossed illegally, beacause we have the spirit of UBUNTU, while SA'ns do not have jobs, housing and food? What about senseless killings, rapes and theft? Does THAT make any sense to you?

Eduan 3/5/2008 11:14:22 AM
Well if this is the reason the "Depression finally overwhelmed" you then you seriously have your priorities screwed up. Yes, it was wrong. But please get real. There are far, FAR Bigger issues plauging this Country. At the rate the Murders are carrying on now, you soon wont have any more Fellow "Brainless clown" Afrikaners to criticize.

Andries 3/5/2008 11:14:40 AM
Your deppresion is due to the loss of the moral high ground. Up to now us white citizens could look at the current state of affairs and and feel that we have tried to do our bit and that our side of the slate is clean. However, after the video and the certainly after the enexplainable defense of the issue, we have to face the fact that the white part of society are nowhere close to understanding the concept of dignity and respect. After all they were just a bunch of 'ousies'.

Whatever 3/5/2008 11:14:41 AM
The only reason for the media circus is that these idiots were dumb enough to film their stupidity. Just think how depressed you would be if we had videos of countless women and children being raped everyday, but we quickly forget about it because we didn't actually see the proof of it. It's just one more murder, one more rape to add to the list.

Female Perspective 3/5/2008 11:16:12 AM
I am glad that you worked through the reason behind your Great Depression Max, but I would personally much rather be forced to drink a glass of someone's piss, than be savagely raped or murdered. There is unfortunately no question of which one is more likely to happen to me here though, is there? I must therefore refuse to immerse myself (pat-on-back-higher-self-like)in this one isolated incident, when we are all drowning in far too many incidents of hate and fear and pain.

Al 3/5/2008 11:19:33 AM
Well said Max. it really comes down to your last paragraph-what if the tables were turned and it was black students abusing white middle-aged afrikaner women, possibly the mothers of these 4 thugs. The events at UFS should not be a black or white issue but rather a moral issue.

Just wondering 3/5/2008 11:21:05 AM
With all the race uproar created by the jackass idiots on UFS campus, will this story (http://www.dieburger.com/Stories/News/17.0.187720628.aspx) get the same publicity and attention from all corners of the political, social and media spectrum, or will it be condoned to an insignificant little isolated incident in Robertson? Is this less of a racist issue or just less sensational and juicy? Lack of consistency gets me depressed.

Pluto 3/5/2008 11:23:22 AM
I understand that these students really put them self under the watch glass, but I believe that the media is using this as a opportunity to make money! I don't see that all the murders, rapes, crime, hijackings etc etc gets the same media publication. Our country is in a depressions yes, the depression of loosing innocent human live and people we love, why don't we wake up and see what really is happening around us or do we have to wait till it happens to someone we love before we realize the truth of our depression, Max you are looking for attention please grow up!!! The fact is these simple students only caused media sensation not loss of live!!!!

Coen 3/5/2008 11:24:15 AM
I agree with you, the depression has hit me as well because of this video. I always felt and believed that the next generation, of all colours, will be the real NEW South Africans. The one's without emotional baggage of the past. I think we as S'Africans are caught up in something evil that has not been addressed yet and it's snowballing. The easiest is to point fingers of course. But hopefully, and I again naively hope, that this is an isolated incident. But I think not.

Joller 3/5/2008 11:31:38 AM
Have you ever seen a Jackass movie? They most certainly do not pull pranks on "anyone and everyone". What they do is perform a series of crazy stunts themselves, to test their limits and make us laugh at their outrageousness. What they would never, ever do, is subject innocent working people to the kind of gross indignities the UFS dooses did in their video. Stop trying to make excuses for them. They are just as bad as the Nazis who enjoyed publicly humiliating Jews in the run-up to WW2.

Will 3/5/2008 11:32:39 AM
Great column, Max. There worst of this is the increase in I-told-you-so from the most polarised citizens. To the left, an all-whites-are-racists refrain, joined in two-part harmony by the tired, wailing of we-told-you-this would-happen-if-you-voted-yes. It's not a lekker time to be a human, let alone a white South African. I'm staying and I hope we get through it as one, just as we believed it would be in '94.

Eduan 3/5/2008 11:33:26 AM
Well lets see. Almost on a daily basis the tables are turned. We have black youths savaging white females. Open Your newspaper and read. And far from what happened at the UFS, in this case, the Victims are normally raped, mutilated, beaten to death or shot execution style. But I dont see any CNN or BBC Journalists up in arms over that. Blacks are just SOOO ADEPT at playing the poor innocent victim. Oh, and just for the record, I dont condone what happened at all. I also think its disgusting.

Ingrid 3/5/2008 11:34:07 AM
I live in the UK and saw this terrible crime splashed on British TV, do know how embarrassing this is? How do I explain this kind of behaviour to my English boyfriend? I thought SA was going forward not backward!

Colleen 3/5/2008 11:46:35 AM
Even as a moral issue [disrespect for old folk] the seriousness of this matter has been blown out of all proportion ONLY because the 'purpetrators' were white and the 'victims' were black. Every day of the week there are millions of 'disrespectful' jokes/comments/gags/videos at the expense of old folk and no one creates a media storm of indignant protest.

SirDon 3/5/2008 11:51:44 AM
I was not depressed after the FBJ incident, Eskom scandal, Zuma disbanding Scorpions, etc .. then I read this article by Max and now I am depressed such an intelligent man can be such an idiot. Please come squirt Oros in my soup, and yes, I'll eat it while on my knees just for the fun of it.

Sam 3/5/2008 11:52:02 AM
I have not seen the video. I don't want to. It was a foul act that was inhuman. But lets talk about just some of the inhuman acts taking place in our country on a daily basis; every single day someone is beaten, raped and murdered, mostly by black people. Logicaly, I'd rate these acts as far more serious then peeing in someone's food.

nomonde k 3/5/2008 11:53:47 AM
Excellent column Max. As black female in her early twenties- I am appauled and infuriated by the video clip. And yes- had the tables been turned and the students were black, it would have been a federal case so to speak. And as for the Thabo Mbeki- Jacob Zuma saga, I share your sentiments. A country that is led by a tribalist with no ethics, has no relevant understanding of the seriousness of the HIV/Aids pendamic and is linked to henious corruption will leave us no hope. Very relevant column.

MySA.com 3/5/2008 11:54:58 AM
What a pity...things like these do not have a place in SA but the issue is the attitude and behavior of the people of this beloved country. As young person, I'm disappointed with our Gvt officials, there is no leadership, no actions, no progress, no thing except position based scandals and corruption. Ndisatshaya. MySA.com

Alicia 3/5/2008 12:03:57 PM
I was born in the 40's and obviously went through many changes in our country. The idiotic, shameful behaviour of the students shames me. Comparing it to the primitive murders, rapes and atrocities which all South Africans, black and white are subjected to is so painful and confusing. All these years I heard and was told that WE are BETTER than them??? So, why behave like them. My apologies to my black friends.

TheOne 3/5/2008 12:07:33 PM
The problem is that most whites want to justify the racist actions of fellow whites (Skierlik, UFS, farmers killing labourers, etc) with the criminal actions of some black criminals. The truth is many blacks get hijacked, mugged and maimed by fellow black criminals, and when this happen to whites, they cry racism. Come-on ... Racism and criminality are two different things -and racism is the problem in this regard.

taurus 3/5/2008 12:09:18 PM
My my, what a lot of pietistic self-flaggelation. Enlighten me, why should I apologise for something four stupid idiots did? Should I then not also have to ask forgiveness for Leon Schuster's movies which are just as degrading?

adrian 3/5/2008 12:10:54 PM
I'm more depressed about the 5 Million Aids orphans, The fact that at least 1 in 10 of our population is Hiv Positive and we still have the same minister of health in office! I'm depressed that BEE Policies are causing 1000's to emigrate to find Work, I'm depressed that every time i walk the street, drive in my car, wave goodby to my wife and kids, go to sleep at night etc I'm really aware that it could be my or their last day on earth that we'll be hijacked, murdered raped etcTe list is longer..

Piet 3/5/2008 12:10:59 PM
I was also very depressed about the state of our nation but am very positive now. I got my Australian Visa today. Who's coming along? And no, I am not coming back when all these problems are sorted out. That will never happen. Who's going to sort it out, the clever, bright hard working masses? I'll see you in Australia when you come over to watch the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Until then..

Rishal Sangan 3/5/2008 12:12:13 PM
The only thing that gives me hope is that there are open minded people like you out there.

TheOne 3/5/2008 12:17:03 PM
What amazes me is that many whites tell us that 14 years is too short a period to effect racial integration (at UFS), yet long enough to discard tranformative policies such as AA, BEE, etc. This only goes to show that for such whites, apartheid was not as serious as blacks make it out to be; hence their penchant to tell the blacks to "forget about apartheid and move forward"

Quentin 3/5/2008 12:19:32 PM
Thanks Max for the article. I still however believe in the people of South Africa.

Nhl 3/5/2008 12:19:57 PM
I know it's not the only time something like this has occured at the University. The only difference is that this one wsas exposed and thank God for that....Get well soon Max.Shame man.

Annon 3/5/2008 12:21:41 PM
I would like to thank the people of this country as a whole for once again proving that white afrikaners are not welcome here. Now, if you wold kindly give us back our taxes, the food we produce and the corporations we built, we would be glad to leave. There is a saying:"Don't criticise a boer with your mouth full".

Gatvol 3/5/2008 12:24:41 PM
Max, could we ask you to write an article objectively, about the crime that black people have to face in their townships everyday? Yes, the murder of poor, defenceless, old, white people is terrible. What about the crime that black people have to face EVERY day? What are their lives like? White people live comfortably in their suburbs...what about the black woman having to manage on her own at home in a black township? Please Max...

GE 3/5/2008 12:31:24 PM
Max, worry about the big stuff, murder, violent crime, the rand, education, health. Grow up, there will aways be sick jokes and students.
