Prince Mashele

Congratulations to the winners and sorry to losers! The good thing about April 22 is that the top three political parties have all won, the ANC, DA and Cope. Unfortunately, the losers are smaller parties.

While the ANC has failed to secure a two-thirds majority, it has still performed beyond expectations. We should not forget that we are dealing with a party that has gone through a turbulent 2008. It fired a State president, two provincial premiers and some of its prominent leaders left to form Cope.

While dealing with all this, the party also had to rush in and out of courtrooms in support of its leader who faced criminal charges. Yet the ANC still managed to secure 65.90% of the national vote and remains the ruling party in all provinces but the Western Cape. We can thus conclude that the ANC won against all odds. Congratulations ANC!

Although squeezed between the ANC and Cope, the DA still managed to secure 16.66% of the national vote, which is a substantial improvement from 12% in 2004. You love or hate the DA, this party has done a good job. They ran an effective campaign and implemented a working strategy.

Thanks to the short-sightedness of the ANC in dealing with its internal politics in the Western Cape, the DA is now able to form a provincial government without the assistance of other parties in that province.

South Africans will now have an opportunity to compare the performance of provinces run by the ruling party with a province governed by an opposition party. Congratulations DA!

Cause of death

Formed only four months ago, Cope scored 7.42% of the national vote and secured a position as an official opposition party in five provinces. No party formed after 1994 has ever broken this record. All parties launched post-apartheid failed to secure a mere 5% of the national vote.

There are those who believe that if Cope did not introduce Mvume Dandala late in the day, they would have performed even better. Well, this is speculative; we only need to look at what they have achieved. Congratulations Cope!

Let us all cry with smaller parties. While leaders of small parties kicked and screamed in defence of their parties during campaigns, voters have been merciless in ignoring the shrill of the desperate voices of the PAC, Azapo, UDM, ID and others.

When political doctors perform a post-mortem, they are likely to locate the cause of death in two parts of the body of small parties: (1) the failure to fashion a modern political outlook and (2) an inability to grow beyond the founder leader of the party.

The first cause of death affects mainly parties such as the PAC and Azapo. Apart from the leader of the PAC looking like a pity-deserving fellow, the party is still stuck in the old conception of Africanism, an anachronistic conception of Africanism fixated on the thirst for land for the sake of land. Even if you were to give the PAC land, it remains unclear what exactly they would do with it - let alone the question: do they have the capacity to do anything with land?

On its part, Azapo is yet to make black consciousness a phenomenon that is relevant to post-apartheid South Africa. Steve Biko played his part in our history, and it remains for Azapo to play its particular role in our politics today. Let our collective hero, Steve Biko, rest in peace and please, Azapo, tell us why you deserve to be our electoral heroes today!

The political tactic of waving past flags is fast losing its appeal. Voters ask a simple question: if we vote for you, what will you do for us, and do you have the capacity to deliver on your promises, full stop! This is how brutal the voting station is!

IFP needs to be rescued

As for the ID and UDM, you need not put on your pince-nez to tell that both parties are in a coffin waiting to be buried. Since they broke onto our political scene, they have moved in reverse in their attempts to garner votes.

Ironically, the enemies of the UDM and ID are their own leaders. Close your eyes and imagine the two parties: who do you see? Do you see any credible and high-profile leaders other than the founder leaders of the two parties? If you do, congratulations!

It would indeed be unfair to ignore a party that got position four in the national vote, the IFP. The IFP has secured 4.55% of the national vote and 22.40% in Kwazulu-Natal. Nationally, the party has done well, although it remains a sick patient in the intestine care unit (ICU) panting for its life. The tragedy of the IFP is that the older its leader gets, the more senile the party becomes. In other words, the party needs to be rescued from its own leader.

Furthermore, it is the IFP's reliance on Zulu nationalism that explains the victory of the ANC in KZN. A universalist Zulu had the following question to answer before placing a cross: do I want a Zulu to become South Africa's president or do I what to prevent the death of a Zulu nationalist party? Well, let's wait and see if the IFP will come out of the ICU alive or if it will, like the ID and UDM, jump into the coffin for a quick burial.

This said, it is advisable for all of us to tone down our faith in elections. In his seminal book, In Defence of Lost Causes, theorist Slavoj Zizek reminds us: "Fully 'rational' elections would not be elections at all, but a transparent objectivised process."

Herein lies our individual and collective foolishness in attempting to attach a modicum of wisdom to the X we placed next to the party of our choice - even as we all agree that democracy is a better model of governance.

The magical X

Thus, the joy generated by our individual X should not create the illusion that the unemployed will suddenly have jobs. Neither should the X delude us into believing that those retrenched since the beginning of the global economic crisis will go back to their positions of employment, nor should the X hypnotise us into thinking that corruption will disappear in government or society.

Indeed, one wonders how has the X suddenly come to possess such magic that it will, by osmosis, make the public service work better and cause manna to fall from our good Lord in Heaven.

So, as we congratulate winners and cry with losers, we should not allow politicians to make us believe that, tomorrow, we will wake up in Utopia when, yester night, we slept in biblical Egypt.

All we need to do is to congratulate the ones who are in and sympathise with those who are out - and hope that the politicians who are in will remember to throw crumbs society's direction.

Although proportional representation is probably the best method of government for our fractured multi-cultural society, it still boggles the mind that a person with little contribution to society (whether though their own fault or not) has exactly the same say in electing an official(s) as someone who contributes billions to the economy.

Kuifkop 4/28/2009 12:58:47 PM
We all hoped for a better life for all after making th emagical "X", but already the excuses are coming out. Jakob said "depending on the availibilty of the means..." so we are going to wait for the new houses, the electricity, the water, the jobs, just like those in Zim are still waiting for their share, Morgan also said there are no "funds" to improve life in Zim, not what he promised before.. just hold out the begging hand.

TB 4/28/2009 1:07:14 PM
According to their leaders the FF+ lost voters because the DA scared them with anti-Zuma psoters! Hells bells, what does that say about their EQ's? Personally I think their support base is dying out due to old age.

I always enjoy your work, Prince. Most likely, it will once again be too intellectual for many of the readers. I'm going to look up some of these authors you refer to. After all, knowledge is power.

Let us bow our heads and have a moment in silence and ponder our potential. Please note! All the small parties can collect free vouchers and application forms to be integrated into higher societies of SA. Your options are: COPE, ANC and DA. Later you will see the light of this new direction even if the clouds at present look a little grey.

Jhazzman 4/28/2009 1:19:30 PM
I always enjoy your articles. Well balanced. Let us in SA strive for excellence, and hold ALL our leaders responsible for delivering the quality that is there charge.

I really enjoy reading your work, as you have the ability to see things from all sides. Nice article today, let's hope that people see this for the good, intellectually stimulating piece it is and not end up battling wits at the lowest end of the intellectual spectrum - by bringing in racism and 'white colonialism' as I have seen on other News24 forums today.

Agree with most of your assessment of the political landscape we find ourselves in post elections. Cope did exceptionally well considering their infancy in the political arena. DA also did well and I thank goodness I live in Cape Town where they will govern. ANC lost support to both these parties, but also gained some from IFP iro Zuma marketing himself as a zulu, thereby gaining the tribalist support of other zulus who are pleased to have one of their own as president. The only thing I beg to differ on in your article is where you say ANC performed beyond expectations - the ANC and their supporters were actaully convinced that they would get more than a 2/3rds majority in this election which they have failed to do. In fact some supporters were convinced they would get more than the last elections ie: more than 70%, so no, they did not perform better than they expected, but unfortunately they did perform better than others expected. I had faith that more of the majority had had their eyes opened to the "real" ANC and that even the racist supporters who openly say they would not vote for Zille because she is white, would feel that they had an option in Cope. Many did, but not as many as I had hope for. I am just really pleased our constitution is safe even if our country is not.

Tholo 4/28/2009 1:41:40 PM
Thanx for a brilliant piece of article, it adds a fresh air to an otherwise tense atmosphere. Just look at the treatment of State President at the Freedom Day Celebrations in Durban's ABSA Park! Pathetic to say the least! My foot, this is the President of South Africa! But is it diffcult to find out who and why they did that? I don't think so but I smell something here. Anyway, elections have come and gone and now we need to go back (that is those who are still fortunate to) work and deliver!

JBird 4/28/2009 1:42:26 PM
It would be fantastic to see an objective report on the performance of all three parties come the next elections so that we dont have to rely on general statements as to the performance of each party. We need to be able to determine what was delivered against what should of been delivered and to allow a like for like comparison between parties. I have found the Cape Town financial statements for last year but not Joburg's. Anyone know where I can find this?

cvz 4/28/2009 1:47:05 PM
Shew, and here i was scared that you'd go on and on praising the ANC endlessly - thank you Mr. Mashele, it seems you have the right frame of mind.

nthatuwa 4/28/2009 1:52:03 PM
The ANC has played our people so well.I nenver heard in their campaigning that they intend halving poverty by 2012.They said they'll eradicate it.They promsed our people the stars, the moon & the sun and now they say "depending on the availibilty of the means..." Aren't the means available being wasted on election campaigns,Freedom day celebrations & inaurgurations? With the state we're in & Zuma wanting to impress us,you'd think he'd do the right think & set his priorities straight. What an arse.

KOBUS 4/28/2009 1:52:54 PM
I think you mean "intensive care unit" and not "intestine care unit", or does Prince Buthelezi have some kind of stomach complaint that you are referring to? :)

motswanagape 4/28/2009 2:13:26 PM
I voted ANC and we've been mostly victorious .I always ponder about two strange scenarios.Firstly, the other parties except Inkatha have accepted defeat with humility. If the ANC were to loose will our ANC supporters accept the results ?Secondly, how interesting would our elections be if the results would stay stalemate/deadlocked ( ANC 60's ,DA 30's and Cope 10's) till kingdom come.

Phinah 4/28/2009 2:20:38 PM
Hopefully we will have at least 5 parties on the national list. I just dont understand why is it that this smaller parties dont just contest a provincial legislature before going all out for the national parliament? ID should just focus on Western Cape and IFP on Kwazulu Natal, surely they will do well focusing all their attention in one province?

samsam 4/28/2009 2:31:09 PM
Good leadership skills from JZ,I have learnt a lot, however I differ with you when you complement DA&COPE they lost DISMALLY Tony Leon has ackonwledge that, check his article on BusinesDay,they dont have strategy to kill a limping animal, they were completely outclassed by a LESS EDUCATED Zuluboy, with their degrees from Sussex

Fraud 4/28/2009 2:46:30 PM
and the rest; the elections are over. Come on guys, let's move forward. We get it; you hate Zuma. Even if he could put crime to a complete stop and improve the economy; you'd still passionately hate him - we get it. Now may we please move forward? Thanks.

Sebastien 4/28/2009 2:46:49 PM
Just wait, they haven't woken up yet. =D - Good article, very pleasant read.

Fraud 4/28/2009 2:57:41 PM
most cope supporters I've spoken to are disappointed - and rightfully so. These guys were (mis)led to believe that they actually stood a chance against the ANC. The DA, on the other hand, knew that they'd lose against the ANC and so they picked their battles carefully and won. Congrats to them. Of course the Stop Zum campaign did not attract any black voters, but instead repelled a lot of black people from it. But what it did achieve was to consolidate the support that the DA has and the type of voter who is more likely to believe that Zuma is actually Lucifer himself (as he is described by the DA). Cope's challenge in the next 10 years is survival more than anything (looking at the trend of splinter groups). The ANC is extremely under pressure to perform, and they might. If they do, we could see the same cycle we've been seeing so far, ANC improving its majority (like 1994 to 1999 to 2004).

catherine 4/28/2009 3:11:55 PM
Many thanks for an objective, insightful article. Refreshing to find an intellectual analysis of the current political climate.

Shrek 4/28/2009 3:18:56 PM
With voting comes a big responsibility - accepting responsibility for your vote.We need to respect peoples vote & accepted the results. Based on the election promises made by the ANC, SA is heading for greener pastures, job creation, more housing, no more squatter camps, access to water/sanitation etc,. The future certainly looks great.

maxx2 4/28/2009 3:28:16 PM
Most of our laws do not a require a 2/3 majority to enact. In any event, there are parties which are sympathetic to the ANC which can assist it in the event they want to change the constitution eg AZAPO,APC and MF

malcolmx 4/28/2009 3:28:48 PM
ANC voters can now start their fourth long wait for the ANC promises to bear fruit. Fourth time lucky. But not to worry. When you stupid idiots get nothing more than a tap with occassional running water about a kilometre down the road, you still have an opportunity to vote ANC again and have a fifth opportunity to wait for F.A.

Sbo 4/28/2009 3:53:59 PM
I don't understand this hype about the ANC loosing its 2/3rd majority. People must accept that more than 11million SA citizens voted for the ANC and not for an individual. People have faith in ANC policies and we do not have time for newly formed organisations who will take us back another 15yrs from now. The ANC must continue with its programme and they need to be kept on their toes to deliver.

Karen 4/28/2009 3:57:50 PM
We don't hate Zuma, well at least I don't. I just hate having him as our president, however if, by some miracle he completely stopped crime and improved the economy I would definitely change my mind - not likely though. As for Cope supporters they should not be disappointed. I think, for a new party barely four months old, they did very well and will grow considerably before the next election. This election was very interesting, the next one will be even better. Cant' wait for it....

MJS 4/28/2009 3:57:53 PM
Sobriety is not a word to be used at this point in time - Now comes a period of mad spending to get new cars, houses and outfits. Then the proof will be in the pudding for both the ANC and the DA, as now the DA has a province in which to proove that they are capable leaders, which in turn might lead the ANC to try and lift their game at least 550%. Then we will all be the winners. Lets see who pushes whom to greatness!

aqgqe 4/28/2009 4:10:16 PM
Prince we know that you are the one who is disappointed with COPE, we know you are COPE supporter, i think you should be political Advisor for COPE.

Fraud 4/28/2009 4:40:15 PM
these elections were very exciting, and the next ones will be even more exciting.

June 4/28/2009 4:52:02 PM
Brilliant Sir.

Figgo 4/28/2009 6:56:03 PM
This 65.9% gained by the ANC in these elections could be the last throw of the dice by the voters and if they continue to f@#k up as they have always done before they could soon see their arses !!!

Colorblind 4/28/2009 11:49:25 PM
The DA will send a clear message to all that the ANC mediocrity is not going to uplift anyone. The DA will set the example of what bennifits a well run provincial government offers its constituants.Congratulations DA. The DA might just be the medicine the ANC needs to cure its ill's. ANC and others try to make out DA is a "white" Party. Go do your homework and see what Zille has done for the "Struggle" then next time put your cross next to DA because you know its the right thing to do!

Barend J Nel 4/29/2009 4:15:35 AM
Mr.Mashele, your articles are always a reminder of the insightfulness so many of us don't possess. Education can enlighten the nation and for the sake of our children I hope this time around the ANC delivers." together we can do more"
