Cape Town - Calls to Charlize Theron to say a few words in Afrikaans when (hopefully) accepting an Oscar later this month, have echoed even through parliament.
In a motion to the national council of provinces, Adriaan van Niekerk, the NNP's language ombudsman, asked that the council congratulate Theron on the Golden Globe award she won last month for her portrayal of a serial killer in Monster.
He also asked for the council to pass on a message to her that, as an openly proud South African, she say a few words in Afrikaans, if she wins an Oscar for her role.
The NCP accepted the motion. Naledi Pandor, chairperson, however did not know how they would get the message to Theron.
During a visit to South Africa two years ago, Theron said: "The day I win an Oscar, I will accept it in Afrikaans."
