SA 'taught Charlize discipline'

2008-06-30 09:40

Anesca Smith

London - Oscar winner Charlize Theron believes her South African childhood helped her with the discipline necessary for difficult roles like that of Aileen Wuornos, the serial killer in Monster.

"I tried to establish a link between Aileen and her experiences as a child when I remembered something that had happened to me when I was five years old."

"We were driving somewhere when all the cars stopped because a truck had fallen over and caught fire. A man was trapped in the vehicle."

"Everone in South Africa carries a firearm and he pleaded for someone to shoot him, because he didn't want to burn to death. Nobody could get him out and someone shot him."

"It was terrible, but one of those moments that taught me the value of life," Theron said in an interview with The Observer on Sunday.

Her film Hancock, also starring Will Smith, has started showing in South Africa.

Theron also explained why she was not afraid of tackling roles in which she did not look attractive.

"Why do we have to be embarrassed to show different sides? Why should we be only one thing: a good mother or a prostitute?

"I don't think that what lies under my clothes, is evil. I am a woman and I am feminine. I like how I look and I celebrate it. I don't apologise for it."

Is this story for real? Maybe it was Charlize's East Rand upbringing that prepared her for the role of a redneck serial killer ... (OK OK, just a joke, but this article is one too!)

Xmas & Guns 6/30/2008 10:21:05 AM
First I read last December that Charlize told the world that we don't celebrate xmas in SA...and now we all carry firearms??

Christel 6/30/2008 10:23:03 AM
"Everyone in South Africa carries a firearm" ???? What is she talking about. I don't know anybody that carries a firearm! A friend of mine does own one, but always keeps it in a safe...this woman is clearly trying to ride on the wave of her South African background...pretending she came out of some kind of warzone!

Monique 6/30/2008 10:51:26 AM
When Charlize was 5 year old, it was +/- 1982, every adult man I knew had a fire arm back in the 80's, I was a child myself, but can remember this clearly!

It is really sad that this woman, who is clearly from another planet, has so many stupid things to say about our country. What's even worse is that the whole world's media will believe everything that she says... I wish she would rather not feel the need to talk about a country that she obviously knows so little about!

Nolene 6/30/2008 11:54:30 AM
Surely someone will be up for manslaughter if they shoot someone even to save his life... Can't remember that story being on the news...

Janine 6/30/2008 12:00:22 PM
First of all Charlize is no longer a South African. She is a US citizen. Everytime she has an interview she always tells them of her experience in "my home country" Charlize you don't even know your own country. There are so many beautifull places in SA. Why do you talk about that, but no you speak of all the bad things. People in SA is starting to change, why do you start!!!!!!!!

Mavijela 6/30/2008 12:13:53 PM
What the hell does she mean that "Everyone in South Africa carries a firearm".Only police carry firearms with them, maybe thats who she meant.Maybe when she was five there was only policeman living were she lived.

Xmas 6/30/2008 12:15:37 PM
If you ever celebrated Xmas in the Northern Hemisphere, you would know what she means by not celebrating Xmas.- H

SA frakked her up so she ENDED UP in Hollywood.

frankman 6/30/2008 12:17:37 PM
What a stupid thing to say, every man in SA had a gun . yet this guy ask someone to kill him..where was his gun??? Please Charlize keep your mouth shut about our country, you know nothing about it. So you and your family witnessed a murder and said nothing to the police at the time? Just goes to show, Beauty is really just skindeep. Stupidity on the other hand, is longlasting!!! What inspires you to strio infront of the cameras?? Also your childhood at home??

One has to agree with Frank. Sincerely.

oj says... Absolute brilliant album... will be buying one... can't wait. I've listened to 4 tracks already and it's fantastic. Don't listen to these critics. Yes it's not as brilliant as get rich or die trying but it's a hip-hop trend setter once again. Read the article...
