London - Coldplay have secured their first UK number one single with Viva La Vida, the title track from their new album, according to figures released on Sunday.
The song topped the chart in its debut week, while the band's fourth album spent a second week at number one, the Official UK Charts Company said.
Although the band, fronted by Chris Martin, have had a string of top 10 hits such as Yellow, Clocks and Fix You, they had never before taken the top spot.
Retailer HMV said the single's success was based solely on downloads from the internet because no hard copies are yet on sale.
"The Coldplay success story just keeps getting bigger," said spokesperson Gennaro Castaldo. "Viva La Vida is one of HMV's biggest-ever selling downloads."
US album chart
On Thursday, the four-piece band scored their first US number one single. They also topped the US album chart.
Elsewhere on the singles chart, last week's number one Singin' in the Rain by dance act Mint Royale fell seven places to number eight.
American R&B artist Ne-Yo climbed one place to number two with Closer, while Barbadian singer Rihanna slipped to third with the ballad Take a Bow.
US singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles was at number four with Love Song, ahead of Forever by R&B singer Chris Brown at five.
Sweet About Me, the debut single by Australian singer Gabriella Cilmi, was steady at number six, while indie band The Ting Tings were down three at seven with That's Not My Name.
Mint Royale, Welsh singer Duffy and US pop singer Jordin Sparks completed the top 10.
