Los Angeles - The stunts of Johnny Knoxville and his friends risking life, limb and good taste kicked "Jackass: Number Two" to the top spot at North American theatres over the weekend, preliminary figures showed on Sunday.
The sequel to "Jackass" is the second film spun off Knoxville's MTV reality show and on its debut weekend raked in $28.1m, estimated box office tracker Exhibitor Relations Co.
"Jet Li's Fearless" debuted in second place. The martial arts epic grossed about $10.6m.
Last week's winner, "Gridiron Gang," came in third, ahead of several debuts. The story of Los Angeles youth delinquents who took inspiration from their American football coach brought in some $9.7m.
The World War I aerial dogfight film "Flyboys" debuted in fourth place with about $6m, the box office tracker said.
In fifth place was "Everyone's Hero," about a youngster who crosses the United States during the 1932 World Series to return a baseball bat to Babe Ruth. The late Christopher Reeve directed the G-rated animated feature, which brought in about $4.8m.
A film noir mystery, "The Black Dahlia", directed by Brian De Palma, slipped from second place to sixth, bringing in about $4.4m.
"All the King's Men," modelled on Louisiana political kingpin Huey Long, debuted in seventh place, despite performances by Kate Winslet and Sean Penn, with about $3.8m.
Rounding out the top 12 were: "The Covenant" at $3.3m, "The Illusionist" with $3.28m; "Little Miss Sunshine" pulling in $2.9m; "Invincible" at $2.6m; and "The Last Kiss" with $2.5m.
Together, the top 12 films made some $81.9m, off almost seven percent compared to the $87.9m grossed during the same weekend last year.
