UK invests in memorabilia

2006-05-31 12:47

London - Some Britons are prepared to invest in memorabilia of celebrities such as England footballer David Beckham or U2 rock band leader Bono to earn money for retirement, according to a survey by Aon Consulting on Tuesday.

A survey of 1 680 adults showed 29% of respondents said they would consider celebrity memorabilia as an investment option for their pensions.

Property and timeshare properties were the most favoured area at 58%.

At a time when public confidence in traditional pension investments has been hit by concerns about market volatility and the costs of covering an ageing population, alternative investments in property, antiques, vintage wines and timber are growing, Aon said.

"The average UK investor should be wary of directing too many funds towards the latest investment craze of buying signed photos of today's hottest celebrity or relying on a dusty bottle of Bordeaux to appreciate in value, without initially seeking proper investment advice," said Ian Dearnley, a client relationship director at Aon.

Among other details, 70% of respondents said they would consider alternative investments. Some 34% said they would consider classic cars, and the same percentage would look at evergreen forests.

Marguerite Winton says... Left home in the Southern Suburbs at 2.30pm. Got to general area of Val de Vie - i.e. Franshoek / Paarl valley on R301 at 4pm. Got into veuue & parked at 6.40pm........ complete lack of organization on behalf of all the mail players...... & the so called security / parking attendants didn't have a clue - most have probably never driven or parked a car in their lives. Concert was brilliant although very short for the ticket price. The food was very disappointing & as for the bar - well, I think everyone else has said was a shambles that was. getting out was an absolute nightmare - the concert finished at 10.15 & we actually left the venue at 2am - got home 3.15am..... the friends who were with us were still stuck inside the venue when we were already home!!!! Maybe there are still people there now? There was absolutely no security or other help to direct traffic to get out. In fact 2 young guys in a 4X4took it upon themselves to go on point duty & start directing traffic out in a more orderly way - don't know who they were but I say a big well done to them as without them I think we would all have still been there. My great fear was if an emergency were to happen, such as a car go on fire on similar no emergengy vehicle could get in either. Where were the Health & Safety people when this shambles was planned? Val de Vie in its present state with lack of exits, lack of general organisation etc is NOT a suitable venue for an event such as this one. I have a ticket for Elton John who is also going to be playing there but I will NOT now be going. BIG CONCERTS is going to loose a lot of street cred if they don't improve on last night's debacle.... please passs all these comments on to them. I will also be writing to KFM & Heineken.
