Pietermaritzburg - What was initially thought to be an aborted foetus left in a toilet at McDonald's in Commercial Road, turned out to be a toy that had expanded and filled the toilet.
Cleaner Thuthukile Zungu said she saw that one of the toilets was blocked with what looked like flesh and told a security guard.
Guard Nkosijabo Matiwane said he went to have a look and tried to flush the "foetus" down the toilet, "but nothing moved".
He then told one of the managers, who called the police.
Inspector Jack Haskins from Mountain Rise Police Station arrived and readied himself to remove the "foetus". He put his hand into the toilet and pulled out a toy, which had expanded on contact with water and filled the toilet pan. "That had a happy ending," he said.
The toy was of the type that comes in the shape of various animals and expands greatly when immersed in water for a long period.
