Gareth accused of blasphemy

2007-12-04 21:59

Birgit Ottermann

Cape Town - 5fm DJ Gareth Cliff is in trouble again. The controversial radio presenter has caused a furore by calling God "petty" on his breakfast show.

However, according to Cliff's manager, the incident has been blown out of proportion and taken out of context.

"Cliff has been accused of blasphemy for referring to a news report of the Teddy Teacher Gillian Gibbons who had been arrested in the Sudan for naming a teddy bear Mohammed."

"Blasphemy should not be a crime," Cliff said in an e-mail on Thursday.

"If God is great, why would he be so easily offended by what a mortal man says? If God has such an ego, then he must be petty."

Since the show, numerous e-mails have been circulating on the web with petitions "to get Cliff off air".

News24 has also received numerous complaints of users saying that Cliff "has gone too far".

'God is not petty'

June Jousten, a News24 user from Gauteng, said: "What really gets to me, is that this seems to happen on a daily basis and that the South African Broadcasting Association does little to zero about it."

In the midst of the furore is Gerda-Mari Povey, a 5fm listener from Pretoria, who sent an e-mail of complaint to Cliff on Thursday morning after listening to his show.

Povey forwarded her e-mail correspondence with Gareth Cliff to News24.

She wrote to him: "You know what, Gareth, I love your show, but this morning u shocked me!!!! just wanted to say, God is not petty!!!!!

"I pray that something drastic will happen in your life, that will allow you to experience the loving kindness and mercy of God..."

"As a Christian, I really felt offended," she told News24. "He (Gareth) should have more respect for people's religion. He has offended many of his listeners."

"What if my children had heard his comments. It was very irresponsible of him. I'm normally the kind of person who just keeps quiet, but this time it was just too much."

Hate mail

Cliff's short reply to her e-mail was: "Stop sprouting nonsense. There is no god. There is no tooth fairy and there is no Father Christmas."

Povey said: "I was so upset. I was almost in tears. I forwarded his response to a few of my closest friends, but I never intended this e-mail to be circulated through the entire country."

Povey told News24 she had been receiving a lot of hate mail since Thursday.

"Some people have said to me, how can I know for sure that it has indeed been Gareth Cliff who replied to my e-mail. Well, I sent my initial e-mail to 5fm's mailbox and Cliff replied to my e-mail from his personal e-mail. Who else at 5fm could have written that e-mail?"

"I don't have anything against him personally, he can debate politics etc all he wants, but when it's about religion, he should show more sensitivity."

Tribunal

Cliff's manager told News24: "Gareth has always been opinionated and loves debating. He has responded to Povey by e-mail as a courtesy and has treated her in the same way as he would have treated a friend."

In his follow-up e-mail to Povey, Cliff placed into context what he was trying to say on his show.

"I will never agree with you just as you find my lack of belief so distasteful. The difference is that I concern myself with people, and try to be a good and hopefully moral person.

"I don't need blessings or permissions or prayers. I'm a happy guy."

According to his manager, Cliff was not available for comment until Thursday morning.

"The SABC has called a tribunal at the Broadcasting Complaints Commission in Johannesburg on Thursday morning at 09:00 to discuss the issue. It will be open to the public.

"The SABC has come to his defence and believes his comments have been taken out of context."

Just another example of how South Africans claim to uphold Freedom of Speech. But only when it doesn't touch them. The very point of Freedom of Speech is that anybody is allowed to say what they please without fear of reprisal and despite how distasteful it may be for the listener. By getting in a huff about this you are no better than the Sudanese government. I dont necessarily agree with what Gareth has to say but I'll fight for his right to say it. Change the station of you don't agree.

brian 12/4/2007 8:39:53 PM
Ah come on I cant believe that this is being taken this far.

David 12/4/2007 8:44:42 PM
I support Gareth 100%. I see no reason why a debate about differences in religous viewponts should be treated with extra sensitivity compared to a debate around politics, the existence of UFO's or even who the greatest artist was. All these topics are based on subjective, unquantifiable beliefs which are open to free and vigourous debate. To me, the usual recourse applies - if you don't agree with the views broadcast, either accept the DJ's right to have those views, or switch off. Simple really

DubbleHeelix 12/4/2007 8:48:23 PM
Well done Gareth, finally someone with the balls to say it as it is. Never mind that blaspheming annoying "god" the whole Old testament is riddled with this so called god's pettiness

Bored of Anal People 12/4/2007 8:52:35 PM
Why have South African's had such a sense of humour failure of late?? The fact that people will actually write in to complain about a joking statement on the radio waves about God, is PETTY! Get on with your lives and stop being so critical, are you the same people that moan about Taxi Drivers in the SMS the Newspaper section, and then write to the Traffic Department to get plead poverty when you get caught breaking the rules, and then hit the church on a Sunday?!?! Get Over it... Boring, Yawn!

Daz 12/4/2007 8:57:45 PM
I am not a huge fan of Cliff but if you dont like him then dont listen to his show!! Its not as if there are no other radio stations!? As for the religious furore. Get over it! If you belive in god (or the tooth fairy for that matter) why does it bug you so much that someone else doesn't. We have had religion (christianity in my case) shoved down our throat for ever. I welcome a balanced opinion even if I dont agree with it! Daz

zwelakhe 12/4/2007 8:59:18 PM
we all love gareth b'coz he is so opinionated & is not afraid 2 speak his mind but i agree that this tym he has gone 2 far even though i believe taking him off air would b extreme

Heather Ellis 12/4/2007 9:05:06 PM
Gareth did not say that God IS or WAS petty; he said that if God reacted in a certain way, He would be petty. My understanding is that Gareth (regardless of his own belief system) felt that God IS NOT petty and that is actually a compliment rather than a criticism.I am a very commited Christian but feel that he has been harshly judged with regard to his original remark. What he did or did not write in an e-mail after that is not confirmed so I shall not comment.

Rationalist 12/4/2007 9:07:24 PM
It is ridiculous that this country continues to allow itself to be bullied by religious fundamentalism. It's time people reaslised that iron-age philosophies have no place in the 21st century.

anti-religion 12/4/2007 9:07:35 PM
This is the 21st century, but yet again action is taken because the fanatics feel their "faith" is under threat. The answer is simple: when I switch on the TV or radio and some religious nutter spews his message about god/salvation/damnation and other medievil fabrications, I change channels. The remote control is a wonderful invention - use it! Oh and dont worry, your child will not be harmed by his opinion, but rather by you enforcing your beliefs on him!

Justin 12/4/2007 9:12:03 PM
I'm so tired of religious groups getting their knickers in a knot. They happily mouth off at gays, abortion etc., but if anyone dares point out the judgemental, punitive nature of their belief systems then there's big trouble to be had. If your belief system is so impenetrable, the allow it to be questionned openly and defend itself - like everyone and everything else has to do! Stop silencing questionning minds.

herman 12/4/2007 9:17:07 PM
a few issues is to be looked at: God is not petty, people is, it was people who started the action in Sudan. If Mr Cliff was putting things in context then why would he put God in the same category as the easter bunny and father christmas. As a public figure he has to be way more carefull in what type of statements he makes. I do think he realy went way to far this time, and it was not so much as on air but his reply to the mail.

Ben 12/4/2007 9:28:57 PM
nobody has respect anymore for anybody else, this is why today's sociaty is going for the bowl of crap. the issue is not about God, but respecting other people - wether its about their religion, race, hair colour, dressing code or what ever. the sad thing is that these kinds of disrespect is being hidden behind so-called freedom of speech. IMO, Cliff should get should get fined or even fired. The day we can learn to respect each other is the day the world would become a better place.

Jaco 12/4/2007 9:31:51 PM
Note that my subject refers to religions, and not "christianity" per se. Yet the smallmindedness by the christian fundamentalists shown over the last few weeks can most certainly not attract any new followers to their cause. I personally would have chosen more sensitive words to make his point than Gareth, but like others mentioned, I too would die to defend his right to Freedom of Speech.

Leo 12/4/2007 10:00:19 PM
I listened to the particular show and firmly believe that his comments were pulled out of proportion. And as far as I am concerned, his references to God was god in general- not confined to God or Allah or any other cultural representation. People are quick to humanise their god but get upset when others challenge this. Look at his comments in the context of the news item at hand and ask yourself whether he was really out of line or whether you are just taking it a little too personally.

huasypyf 12/4/2007 10:14:25 PM
These "holy" people can learn from Gareth and try to be good and moral. It is far too easy to walk over people and then ask for forgiveness later.

TC 12/4/2007 10:27:50 PM
If SABC and Gareth are so convinced of what h said, I dare them to drop their cowardice and replace the word God with Mohammed, and then repeat it on air! Come on Gareth! Come on SABC, Come on 5FM. Let's see what your so called 'freedom of speech' will bring you. Or are you cowardly going to back down on this challenge? Stop bullshitting us...!!!!

TC 12/4/2007 10:37:25 PM
I distinctly get the feeling of bias by NEWS24 in the posting of comment to Gareth's blasphemy and on other recent subjects. Can it be? As for myself, I have to distance myself from Gareth's statements. I will also disance myself from organisationsthat bless his comments with their advertising. Any person that feels the way I do are welcome to join me in objecting.
