Johannesburg - Messages of congratulations have been pouring in for The Soweto Gospel Choir after they won a Grammy Award (Best Traditional World Music Album) for their album Blessed.

Arts and Culture Minister Pallo Jordan said on Monday the Soweto Choir's achievement demonstrates that South Africa not only has the potential to raise its voice and compete with its international counterparts, but that it's of world class.

"South African choral music has won wide recognition in the past because it resonated with the hearts and souls of human kind and the Soweto Gospel Choir is firmly rooted in that tradition."

'We all take pride in your achievement'

"This award is shared by millions of choristers, conductors and composers who have gone unrecognised over the decades. Their belief in choral music has been vindicated by this award."

Jordan said the lyrical content of the music was cosmopolitan and universal and told the story of "one human family under one heaven".

"Well done, we all take pride in your achievement," he said.

Need more media coverage of local talent

The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) also offered words of congratulations to the choir.

Spokesperson Patrick Craven has expressed his hope that local media will now devote more coverage to the brilliant local talent.

"Let us hope that their triumph will convince the local media, especially the public broadcaster, the SABC, to devote far more coverage to our brilliant local musicians, actors and creative artists in all sectors of arts and culture, who are of world-class standard, as the Soweto choir has proved."

World Class according to which world? I have never watched drivel as bad as this since Band Zonder Naam and Pussy Cat! Obviously just ANOTHER ploy to put South Africa on the "Map". If they're gonna lie, use something that is worth listening to and which is not so utterly embarressing to the country!

it warms hearts when, in troubling times, we're reminded what this country is capable of! all the world's respect and congratulations1

World class in such a way that other world class acts such as Bono, Peter Gabriel have done collaboration songs with the Soweto Gospel Choir.

I have only briefly heard this choir in action, and wether they won an award or not is irrelevant. The reaction from everyone is the real problem, and it displays the general SA narrow-mindedness. One accolade, and suddenly people are heroes. We are so desperate for any kind of international recognition, that people are put under undue pressure and burn out before reaching their true potential. Of course, if this potential never existed to begin with, then it just wastes everyones time.

Well done and congratulations! Your hard work and efforts paid off at last. Let us not be discouraged by negative people who are always looking to badmouth SA even when it's uncalled for. These people should just do us all a favour and leave SA; clearly they are not proudly South African!!

i must say, Soweto Gospel choir didnt only do South Africa proud but the whole of the African Continent. This is the true uniqueness of Africa which makes us different from the rest of the world.
