Dear Editor,

I helped a friend who had been sub-contracted as a supplier for the Celine Dion concert, and since I have 10 years in eventing experience, I thought that I would shed a little more light on the story.

The bad traffic was just the tip of the iceberg on Saturday. The actual management of the event and set-up inside was even worse! To give you an idea of quite how bad it was, for the week leading up to the concert, no-one working on site could get hold of the event team. They didn't answer their phones and their voice mails were full!

In point form some of the issues were:

1. No signage
2. No info-centre - one lady lost her kids and there was no way of getting them called for.
3. No lighting - inside or in the parking areas
4. No crowd barriers outside, so the queuing system was a mess. People were taken to hospital as a result of being trampled
5. Limited security who weren't properly briefed
6. Hay bales as barriers between the very expensive and normal tickets but there was no way of monitoring who was going in or out of the areas
7. No directional signage within the venue
8. No toilets outside where some people spent up to seven hours queuing
9. Taking products that suppliers had sold them and then marking them up by 200% before selling them to the public
10. Not making it clear that people couldn't enter with picnic chairs etc and then confiscating them on arrival

I can honestly say that I have never seen people as angry as they were on Saturday. Celine was brilliant, but people's experiences were tainted by what had happened to them by the time she came on stage.

One thing that the organisers did do well was to have no branding so no one could hold them responsible - I think that they need to be named and shamed.

Kusasa should not be given contracts of that nature if they can't handle them!

Witness,
Cape Town

Vote with your wallet - Boycott any furthere Kusasa events! Simple as that.. People should also in SA STOP complaining and take more legal action. In a country such as the States Kusasa would have been sued and would have been filing for bankruptcy by now. People should stop moaning and take these matters to COURT!

miekhunt 2/26/2008 11:29:53 AM
Must say that I am (in a selfish kind of way) quite glad about the balls-up. No way I could afford to attend although I am a huge fan of Celine. Anyway, it just goes to prove the old addage [failing to plan is planning to fail]. But then this is the African way is it not - eish!

john 2/26/2008 11:30:10 AM
and it was 100%, 45mins driving, no queues, just perfect.

Lithium 2/26/2008 11:31:55 AM
I remember the Metallica concert in Centurion also being such a disaster. I don't know if the same company organized both. It is time this industry gets regulated, and people barred from staging these events if they mess up. People pay a lot of money, and mostly have only 1 chance to see these acts. Bad organizing ruins it all. I also dread to think what would happen in a medical emergency!

Hansie 2/26/2008 11:33:31 AM
Will this be the same people that will organise the Josh Groban show? I live in Strand and I think these people just gave our Helderberg basin a very, very bad name. Or are they locals who just wanted to make a quick buck? In so far as the traffic officials go. That is just par for the course. You guys are fortunate to have had some traffic officials. We never see them. Not even when there is a accident. They are just poor and bloody lazy.

LB 2/26/2008 11:37:12 AM
Luckily I am not a Celine Dion fan! I cant imagine paying that much for a ticket and getting all these troubles in return. It really stinks, especially that no one is taking responsibility.

Gregg 2/26/2008 11:37:20 AM
We had people behind us that refused to show their proff of tickets to anybody including the police when there was a query on their seats and tickets.. It eventually turned out that they had fake cardboard tickets and all the police did was move them to some other seats.. Then all the people seated on the field in the R800 decided to all get up and move their seats into the Golden Cicle and fill up the gaps of the people who paid R2500 a seat.. It was joke and the organisers did nothing!!

Cindy 2/26/2008 11:37:31 AM
Just shows how BAD service is here in SA... The customer gets treated like crap in this country and we're too pussy to stand up to it. Down with Kusasa!

Mark 2/26/2008 11:39:40 AM
Please, 94.7, Big COncerts or whoever.. Stick to Computicket.. This was the worst organised concert I've been to in SOuth Africa.. The field seating in Pretoria was a mess, people just moved themselves into the VIP seating when they paid 1/4 of the VIP pricing and the authorities did nothing.. The were fake tickets aplenty causing seating issues! The concerts have been a disaster!

Nic 2/26/2008 11:43:48 AM
I agree 100% with Juan. I did not go to the concert but got caught up in the traffic mess! South Africans are very good at bitching and moaning and then bitching and moaning when it happens again. Nothing ever gets done about the shocking service. Heard Celine was well worth the chaos though!

Craig 2/26/2008 11:44:21 AM
There was the normal parking hilarity.. people having to walk to the stadium from 5kms away.. the queing system was a joke.. There fake tickets everywhere so people got to their seats then there was somebody alreasy sitting there.. Then the police had to be called each time.. All those people on the field just decided they'd make their tickets VIP tickets.. Poor people that paid R2500 a ticket and all those plebs just moed ther seats into the gaps.. Having that USELESS Jody sing before bad!

Thokozani 2/26/2008 11:48:12 AM
That normally happens when projects are given to friends regradless of thier event experience. Until we learn to follow proper business ethics, embarassments such as this one will always take place. This concert was publicised late last year, there is no way that the company contracted would have failed to meet all the things mentioned above. Come on people!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chris 2/26/2008 11:48:56 AM
Kusasa should be sued and file for bankrupcy. Traffic was horrendous. I took 3 hours to get to the venue from Stellenbosch. I hardly had space to stand in the R650 area. Bad organising

Charl 2/26/2008 11:49:15 AM
John not sure which concert you attended in PTA but the saturday night one was terribly organised, tickets were changed, seating was taken together with about 300 other people we missed the start of the concert waiting for replacements tickets, Kusasa cant be bothered as they made the millions already. CG

Al 2/26/2008 11:50:16 AM
It's such a pity the concert got tainted the way it did. We went to The Dome and Loftus, and both were pretty well organised. At Loftus though, people in "cheap seats" however brought their chairs forward to sit right in front of the expensive seats, which created a lot of angry shouting. Organisers should learn to put "able" pointsmen on duty, who can control the croud, otherwise it turn a fantastic evening into a nightmare

Celine_fan 2/26/2008 11:52:02 AM
I went to see Celine on 24th,and I think a lot of lessons were learnt on 23rd,because I have few complaints about the event on 24th.My gripe was though, about taking almost 2 hours to get your car out after the event. All in all,on Sunday I saw everything we were told would not be allowed in,were freely allowed in.

The Truth 2/26/2008 11:53:35 AM
Save yourself the unnecessary stress and buy the DVD's or CD's rather,to listen to in the comfort of your own home.

LFJ 2/26/2008 11:53:54 AM
I agree with you Miekhunt and I think so do many South Africans. The result of the Vote Booth spoke for itself. The tickets were way overpriced for the average South African. Is this some new trend where we are being milked dry to see ageing artists.

Ebs 2/26/2008 12:01:49 PM
I have to say the concert on Sunday was the worst planned event. For starters you had to walk for almost 1km to enter the cheap and dusty venue. Then you had to wait outside with no system in place. Once entering the gates security advised thousands of people to stand in the wrong lines. And after that kusasa or whoever is responsible decided to put up A4 sheets where one need to stand... So much for visibility. I have so much to say but ran out of characters!!

Ricado 2/26/2008 12:03:00 PM
i only go to shows @ Sun City or Cocacola Dome.verything very smooth.even drinks r brought to u.

Michael 2/26/2008 12:03:02 PM
Hell, I'd be prepareed to pay R3000 a ticket to see Bon Jovi at the Dome, but it must be properly organised.. Look at the organisation at Buble and Elton.. Was flawless!! Again run and ticketed by Computicket.. Ticket Connection are some BEE joke of company causing chaos at concerts.. All over the country I've heard of nothing but chaos stories.. And those poor people who paid R2500 a ticket only to have the VERY cheapest seat people mopve their seats up to the VIP section! Disaster! Refund!

Celine Fan 2/26/2008 12:03:19 PM
I was at the concert on Sunday, and while Celine was amazing and a true professional, the logistics around the event was shocking. It has left me feeling totally ripped of! Nobody at the event would take any responsibilty for the mess. When we complained about people who moved themselves into our R 1000 a seat area, we were told by security to shut up or else they will remove US from the venue!!! The person responsible for the mess - Duncan Heafield email duncan@kusasasa.co.za Name & Shame!

Deon 2/26/2008 12:04:08 PM
I was at the concert on Saturday and it was by far the worst organised balls-up that I have ever attended. Everything that the writer mentioned above is spot-on. Kusasu ability to arrange an event of this callibre is non-existant. It sucks when a Company is awarded a contract purely based on their BBBEE status, with no experience. I will never attend another event at Vergelegen Estate, ever. It was a stampede of disaster and hell...Shame on all the event organisers!!!

Tom 2/26/2008 12:05:57 PM
I tried many times to get hold of the ticketconnection call center. One time I held on for 42 minutes before I eventually gave up. Then I emailed the management from Mr. Price and got good service from then on. What is the use of a call center if it's not functioning properly? Call centers in SA is understaffed and poorly trained.

bongani 2/26/2008 12:06:34 PM
Sounds exactly like the coke fest, and numers other concerts I have been to , prob sam organisers , Why make an effort ,if you make so much money , I dont go to these typ of events anymore ,

Gemstone 2/26/2008 12:06:42 PM
Have you looked at legal fees recently? Only the lawyers get lucky.

DQ 2/26/2008 12:09:50 PM
'Witness' from Cape Town also went to help a friend who got the contract. thats how it works in SA, nepotism. And the country will continue to get bad international publicity, i'm surprised artists are still coming here.

Alvin 2/26/2008 12:12:08 PM
Agree 100% with Juan. We South Africans are suckers for poor service. Stop taking this rubbish and let your wallets do the talking. And yes please name and shame companies/people that provide poor service. Apart from the poor service, the prices of tickets are absurd.

Z 2/26/2008 12:12:16 PM
For the Loftus concert I recieved an sms on the day of the event that our tickets have been "upgraded", so we must report at the main gate to receive new tickets. We waited for more than an hour and gave up and decided to go in as the queue was not moving. Inside our seats were no where. It was a chaos on the field seating, people sat anywhere. The worst thing is not to find any person who can help. Worst organised concert on my books, and we payed a fortune. Celine didn't dissappont though!

niels 2/26/2008 12:14:20 PM
I have done numerous mountain bike events at Lourensford and Parking there is strictly a joke. I am sure the numbers for the concert would have been far greater. There is no parking at Lourensford. If the organisers had any sense, they would have hired Radloff park for the event. But having said that, I struggle to have sympathy for people who spend in excess of 900 bucks to hear a wailing banshee.

Darryn Havenga 2/26/2008 12:40:34 PM
Is this not the same group who was staging an event on Parliaments opening apparently with Jacob Zuma as the guest speaker, and he did not even know about it, and Old Mutual pulled their sponsorship because of the lack of transparency? This group should be banned from any event organising.

Sarah 2/26/2008 12:41:34 PM
A friend of mine attended the Sunday night concert. On the way out, she had to climb over hay bales, and was pushed over in a stampede. She landed face first on the ground and now the left half of her face is completely blue and swollen. I reckon she should sue the organisers. Any thoughts?

HD 2/26/2008 12:43:17 PM
From Kusasa's website: "Kusasa Security Group is a wholly black-owned South African security company whose growth and record of service excellence is totally disproportionate to its relatively short period of existence."

Doh 2/26/2008 12:48:58 PM
what a silly idea - when an artist comes to SA you go to see THEM, not because so and so is the organiser! in this case there was no other way to get to see Dion - its not like Computicket was hosting a rival concert. Write letters to management and demand a refund or, try and get media attention. Its a lot more effective than boycotting concerts of artists you like.

Pieter Joubert 2/26/2008 12:51:13 PM
Can anyone tell us? Name them, individuals or companies that own and run this. We have to be more specific if consumers want to start acting for themselves. Otherwise they just change brandname and stage another nightmare.

jeremy 2/26/2008 12:53:44 PM
I stand open to correction, but wasn't the Cape Town concert originally planned for Newlands rugby stadium - and then shifted at the last minute due to safety and noise concerns? If this was the case then it might account, at least in part for some of the organisational cock-ups related above.

Carlette Blanche 2/26/2008 12:54:46 PM
I don't think the organisers of this tour knew what they were letting themselves into. Glad I flew to Pretoria. Loftus was better geared than Cape Town. There were problems with the seating but at least it went off better than in Cape Town. I'll watch the news for Josh Groban's show as the same people are hosting it. I will not buy tickets. Why not host it at the Bellville Velodrome or Grand West!!!

KVZ 2/26/2008 1:03:13 PM
I disagree, just being in the presence of such a wonderful soulful artist enriched my life. I will go again if I could !!!

Deon 2/26/2008 1:13:51 PM
Based on what everyone has said, we should boycott any further events whereby Kusasa's rocket scientists are involved. Unless Josh Groban is going to another venue, I will not put another foot in the crap venue of Vergelegen.

Tonsil 2/26/2008 1:17:58 PM
Kusasa and Ticket Connection should have their licences revoked. What they did was fraud and lies.

settie 2/26/2008 1:18:29 PM
why go to the concert while you can still buy four brand new CDs and videos of Celine with the same amount of money. Ha ha ha

TM 2/26/2008 1:18:29 PM
After having to get my ticket "upgraded" what a laugh it was more of a downgrade as they had sold tickets were you could not sit (and would have seen nothing.... waiting in the "upgrade" que missed the start of the concert only to have my cellphone stolen .... but Celine was worth all the frustration to follow .... i will never go to a concert organised by ticket connection ever again ... what a debacle

Godfreyg 2/26/2008 1:19:53 PM
So Kusasa was responsible for signage,info-centre,toilets,bad traffic, the actualmanagement of the event & all the other problems that the author complains about?

vanessa 2/26/2008 1:29:23 PM
I wasn't at the concert but I know a few people that went to the CT one. All I can say is it is the signs of the times & how everything here in SA is going down with great speed!

Big Bad D 2/26/2008 1:33:05 PM
I have no sympathy with any of you i'm afraid. If you were foolish enough to fork out that sort of money for an overrated/undertalented has-been then you deserve everything you got. Rather sepnd your money supporting local talent...MyCokeFest will be a thousand times better than anything that Canadian schreecher has to offer.

Diva 2/26/2008 1:34:04 PM
It is quite a shame when consumers dont get their money's worth and organisers like kusasa are quite unethical to pocket the money an deliver bad services , compainies as these should be shut down , not only do they rob people out of their hard earned money but they also put peoples life in danger.

Raven 2/26/2008 1:38:04 PM
I don't feel sorry for any of you - utter madness paying such a ridiculous amount of money especially in this day and age and this to see Celine Dion, my word ... quit complaining, you clearly don't know what to do with your money!!!

CSF 2/26/2008 1:39:16 PM
I paid R1000,00 for a dirty platic chair with no view in the Silver Hospitality section, at least we got some free "M&M's" for the kids. Some people paid twice that for reserved parking which they could not get too!! It took us from 16:30 at the N2 exit until 19:30 we were seated! Going home 2.5 hours of traffic jams. The organiders should be fined and stopped from ripping off people again! We should get what we pay for!!

josh fan 2/26/2008 1:43:29 PM
I'm goin to josh groban in stellenbosch on 20 march, after paying R2030 for 3 tickets and a picnic basket, I'm having 2nd thoughts. Could have spent less by just gatecrashing into golden circle ...

Brent Cantor 2/26/2008 1:49:42 PM
Unfortunately i took the trouble, time and expense out to fly to Cape Town from Bloem to see this pathetic organized chaos in motion and all i can say what an embarrassment to Cape Town?? The organizers are a shame to this country to allow people to pay R800 - 00 for a ticket to sit on their asses for the show ??? It's a bloody disgrace !!!!

Pink 2/26/2008 1:52:13 PM
Who in their right mind would pay R2500-00 to see a LAS VEGAS has-been.....i paid R750-00 for 3 tickets to see the BEST EVER CONCERT HELD IN SA............The Rolling Stones and it ROCKED!!

Kaz 2/26/2008 1:58:37 PM
Dude what are you smoking.Kusasa security had nothing to do with event management or the Celine Dion concert.Your comment is misleading and very mischievous...Kusasa Entertainment is a white own company and the fact that its a BEE company or white owned company is neither here nor there...stop trying to bring race into this and focus on bad service

Lee 2/26/2008 1:58:58 PM
I think the venue itself was great for massive outdoor events. I agree, the organisation was pathetic but I really wanted to see Josh Groban at the same venue! It's a pity that it's gonna be the same organisers!

Question 2/26/2008 1:59:30 PM
Slightly off topic, but how many people did attend the concert?

A.L.F 2/26/2008 2:06:42 PM
Try and access the Kusasa website: kusasaent.co.za. This is probably an example of how they organize everything they do! Probably they did not pay for the site and now the account has been suspended.

M 2/26/2008 2:06:54 PM
No matter how horrible the organisation - Celine proved yet again why she is known as a world class entertainer. Her performance was flawless. Sometimes one has got to look past the negative and see the good. We all went there to see her and weren't disappointed where that is concerned!!

Alex 2/26/2008 2:09:55 PM
While on the subject of being ripped off, what is also annoying is paying top price to your favorite artists and then they don't show up? It's happened a couple of times especially with the R&B arists like Snoop and Rihanna. The fact that is was at the Dome and went through computicket, it still didn't matter. I heard the promoter (Kusasa?) was aware long before they notified the public and let people keep buying tickets at the event knowing the headline wasn't coming!

DW 2/26/2008 2:10:03 PM
The website to which you refer is for Kusasa Security - a different company. Kusasa Entertainment is responsible for the fiasco (www.kusasaent.co.za) but their website seems to have crashed. I am not surprised....

Lee 2/26/2008 2:12:30 PM
I was also wondering about that. I've read reports about 20 000 on Saturday, but i thought that the attendance was at least double Newlands stadium capacity!

Z 2/26/2008 2:13:24 PM
The show at Loftus on the 16th was FULL booked. So I guess you we are talking of +-40000 people!

Kesa 2/26/2008 2:19:04 PM
I am so disappointed and feel I've been conned. I live in Somerset West; took 3 hrs to get to Vergelegen early Saturday evening. No parking marshalls in Lourensford Road Inadequate entrance procedures Inadequate flood lighting at the venue No visible security - no Signage - overcrowding No exclusivity for ticket holders. R800 for a free for all Expensive programme and merchandise One brilliant thing - Celine The organisers should be held accountable.

celine fan! 2/26/2008 2:24:58 PM
Celine was worth every penny!!!

Ringomania 2/26/2008 3:02:14 PM
I couldnt agree mo with u! All of u got served!

Mark 2/26/2008 3:13:04 PM
..... was organised by Big Concerts, not Kusasa.

Solo 2/26/2008 3:15:13 PM
I decided to miss the concert and rather listened to someone scratching their nails on a black board. It sounded exactly the same, and I did not have to stand in a line at all!

A 2/26/2008 3:18:53 PM
I had to hear my stupid sister-in-law bragging about how they are going to see Celine Dion. Strange how I haven't heard a peep out of her since the concert. Shame B.B!!!!

Me 2/26/2008 3:23:43 PM
I really had to clarify this one. Kusasa Entertainment is owned by WHITE person.

Godfrey 2/26/2008 3:40:55 PM
THANK YOU FOR BRINGING SANITY INTO THIS DISCUSSION!

Ronele 2/26/2008 3:56:18 PM
This was a shame I think we should band together and demand our money back. we were a party of 4 who spent over R3000 for this concert, imagine what a killing they made from the golden "circle" universe. This was bad I was never that scarced, in 1 night I was trampled, stempeded, thrown with empty water bottles, screamed at and accosted by the uninformed "security". Shame on you Kusasa we want more than an apology by the same radio station that assisted you.
