Cape Town - "Sorry mate. I know what you are going through. Call me if you are feeling shit. You will."

This was the message sent out by singer Steve Hofmeyr to Joost van der Westhuizen after the scandal of his sex video reached boiling point this week.

Hofmeyr suffered the same fate earlier this year after his affair with Janine van der Vyver was exposed. Shortly after this scandal his wife, Natasha, left him. They are currently in the process of getting a divorce.

The rest of Steve's advice to Joost doesn't paint a pretty picture.

"You will be lucky if Amor stays with you. From now on the media won't give you or your wife any time to sort things out.

"The bloodthirsty public will want answers, when in fact you only have to answer to your wife.

"Men that are tired of masturbating will be judging you. They will be calling you immoral," Hofmeyer wrote on his blog.

"Sadly you won't be remembered as South Africa's hero on the rugby field. Memories are short, but mistakes are never forgotten.

"From now on you will never get any sympathy. You are the Antichrist."

- Die Burger

vk 11/5/2009 11:23:43 AM
So true..."you live by the sword, you die by the sword"

Undertaker 11/5/2009 11:26:35 AM
He's a public figure, did he not think what he was doing is wrong and if it gets out he's screwed, and Steve wants to justify this, Steve you are another loser like Joost
I agree Boom , Soort soek soort

Craig 11/5/2009 11:27:09 AM
Ag Steve... go jump dude! You've passed your sell by date and now you're looking for publicity on your blog. People have fonder memories of Joost that they do of you.

Michael 11/5/2009 11:28:11 AM
You make your living by being a public figure and shamelesly advertise crap that they wouldn't use, or sell their weddig pictures. Its a 2 way street, when you stuff up, expect the public to be involved.

LG 11/5/2009 11:33:01 AM
You know what!! Get over it...we all make mistakes. My husband has made mistakes, I have made mistakes....we learnt from it and moved on... Give this couple a break! its none of our business... He has owned up and asked for forgiveness...now let it go!!!

CTheB 11/5/2009 11:35:50 AM
The difference is that Steve Hofmeyr really is the antichrist.

Attie van Tonder 11/5/2009 11:36:53 AM
Comments like these make me sick. What has gone wrong with us South Africans? What happened to our so called Christian values? Where is the love? Where is our sense of forgiveness? Has the lord not said that the one who is without sin to cast the first stone? Steve, you of all people should have a more compassionate stance. Can we not just forgive and carry on? It seems as if (maybe mainly in the new SA) we have less time and less tolerance towards each other. We should be ashamed before God and people and really repent and start loving each other. Joost (and Steve) what has happened is between you, your spouse and God. If you believe God has forgiven you, plead your wife for forgiveness as well. Then it is important that you forgive yourself as well. Me (the public) needs to stay out of it and also forgive you for the roll model you've set for many kids. It is our task then to pick these kids up and be a roll model of unconditional love to them.

Stephan 11/5/2009 11:41:42 AM
Don't cry about being a public figure when you have and intend (publish a book anyone?) to make money from being one. I just find it amusing that there are people falling for the soap opera bullshit. Tells me something about their IQs.

BrEnt 11/5/2009 11:42:33 AM
Poor Joost, He deserves the sympathy of the public. Shame he cheated on his wife and now he is feeling bad. He should have thought about these things before he did anything. He deserves all the punishment he gets and if Armor has any self respect she should leave him.

A Believer in Forgiveness 11/5/2009 11:45:11 AM
Judgement day is there for everyone... Joost has stood up and asked for forgiveness, other people still have to! No one is better than anyone else!

Joh 11/5/2009 11:46:13 AM
Steve my hero...............

Stunned 11/5/2009 11:48:51 AM
Steve. The only person you should answer to is your wife? Dude, you will be answering to God too. You made vows in front of him and you shook them off asif they were nothing. You acted like you were the innocent angel. You attacked an editor. And guess what? You lied. Just like Joost. You made a promise to your wives and look at what you put them through. Remorse? Heck no. Why should you feel that. You are not God, but you will answer to him

Observer 11/5/2009 11:50:42 AM
Once you have walked a mile in a man's shoes you can pass comment

Jacqui 11/5/2009 11:51:36 AM
Attie: Firstly, it's "role model". Secondly, please don't assume that all South Africans (and for that matter, news24 readers) are christian. That is a totally typical christian view. Thirdly, "God" doesn't give a damn about Joost's sex life or his recreational drug habit. Joost is worse than pond scum at the moment and I don't think he deserves any forgiveness from the public or his family. If schnarffing drugs and sleeping with hookers is classified as a mistake, then what are we teaching our children?

Michael Bowery 11/5/2009 11:53:33 AM
I'm always a little sceptical when I read vitriolic opinions expressed by readers particularly in the realm of sex and human behaviour. Whilst I don't condone Jooste's behaviour, I am drawn to an old saying which reads `There but for the grace of God go I.' There are few of us, especially those who are the most vehement, who haven't got some deep secret which they are personally ashamed of but hasn't yet seen the light of day. The media is what it is, and feeds like a pariah dog on disaster. Jooste mate, you just have to tough it out, earn forgiveness from those who trusted you and the daily `Rag' will find some other juicy bit of scandal to prattle about - it's the nature of the beast called the Fourth Estate.
Michael

Rambo 11/5/2009 11:54:06 AM
Great comment Attie van Tonder. I agree with you 100%.

pieto 11/5/2009 12:00:53 PM
Trust Steve to jump on the publicity wagon the minute it slows down to 350 km/h! Thanks Joost for unwittingly arranging some much needed attention for poor Steve! No he can breath again for a day or so.

Wern 11/5/2009 12:03:26 PM
Looks like most of these who comment on this site has never done something wrong.
Everybody makes mistakes, its not our place to judge.
I wish you good luck Joost and Amor, because you are gonna need it to deal with all the idiot comments you will get.
It's easy to post these ugly comments online where nobody knows your identity. I bet none of these will anything bad to say if they are standing alone in front of Joost.

Graham Smith 11/5/2009 12:05:02 PM
Hey Joost, I heard that Minki is getting divorced, she might want to make a fliek. Just make sure you're NOT wearing polo socks and DO have holes in your undies!

You are the MAIN MAN, we love you dude!

Risk 11/5/2009 12:05:52 PM
Once you have walked a mile in another man's shoes, you'll probably have sore feet

Pretender 11/5/2009 12:10:32 PM
I'm so sorry for Steve.. he still is not able to forgive himself, therefore the lashing out at the media and public! When you are promoting your career, selling cd's, the media is the perfect channel.. then you become a star. You are in charge of your own life and made your own choices. You decided to cheat on your wife, and suddenly, the media telling the public what your are up to (coverage you encouraged before...) is all wrong!!. You want privacy, you want empathy, you want to be left alone.. see the common.. You, you, you.. (how selfish can you be).. A note to all the "stars" out there, live up to the expectations.. the perception people has of you, is the one you created!! Live by it!!

Lewis 11/5/2009 12:11:03 PM
Its none of our business? Helloooo, Joost and Amor are advertising it everywhere, national television, radio stations. All they now need to do is hire a tour bus and travel through the country giving shows about it. They're making it our business.

Wizi 11/5/2009 12:14:59 PM
"Jacqui" - 1 doesn't have to be a Christian to know right from wrong - it shows poor character to shun Christianity! If you don't believe, don't comment, comment only on the story. Joost, u made mistakes, we all have somewhere along the way, you're mistakes however have been made public knowledge, OUR's, NOT, so good luck with everything that gets thrown your way! And hope to see Faith, Forgiveness, Trust, Love overcome HUMAN understanding!

im 11/5/2009 12:16:12 PM
oh, well from steve's comments that actually says it all, what a plonker!!! both of them deserve exactly what they get, I really hope Amor leaves him he does not deserve any sympathy form public let alone his wife and her family! Trash is Trash and they, steve and joost, in actual fact deserve each other if they cannot respect their wives why did they even marry in the first place!

Styles 11/5/2009 12:16:32 PM
Let us not judge and condemn this guy, he made a mistake and he is now cleaning up his closet.
Hansie Cronje was condemned this way and he died a lonely man, which is not fair for someone who did so much for his country.

Karen 11/5/2009 12:17:43 PM
Reading all these comment above i have reached the conclusion that some of the readers did not understand Steves comments. He is actually mocking the critics and not Joost. Obviously he's been there and knows exactly what Joost is going through. So wake up readers and read between the lines. Steve, you are too cute, i dont blame the ladies who have had you.

Megabull 11/5/2009 12:18:50 PM
He said he is sorry more than luke ever did, but you give Joost more hell? I know alot of men that messed around but no-one says anything about it because they are not famous. Let the man be now.

Selma 11/5/2009 12:21:59 PM
Stop preaching fidility in marriage. It is so naive. Big deal. He cheated his wive. Get over it. Who has not cheated on their spouse. Variety is the spice of life.

Pieta 11/5/2009 12:27:26 PM
You can get back your christian values if you want. It is a choice. We as Christians belong to forgive all sinners and help them. Pity for others who want throw stones, you will be stoned back!

Theo 11/5/2009 12:32:01 PM
Hofmeyr is right. The country has problems with violence, crime and drugs. Power outages are common. Violence against children is on the rise. Politicians like Malema appear to be the future. The judicial system is a shambles, there is no private healthcare and various "Charters" are being pushed dowm our throats. Yet Rapport chooses to make this front page news? What a joke. The only thing that van der Westhuisen has to answer for is the cocaine. I have a problem with that, and so does the law. As for the women he has slept with, WHO CARES.

Tracey 11/5/2009 12:36:05 PM
Don't get married if you don't want to be true to your spouse. If you like variety stay single then you can swing around town as much as you like Selma. I just hope that you don't pick up some STD and spread it around. As for Joost and Steve, they should stay single as well.

T1nkerbel 11/5/2009 12:37:04 PM
All I want to know is..what did Amore mean when she said "we have an open marriage"

bj 11/5/2009 12:37:19 PM
Would all you religious freaks stop preaching your fairytales. I'de rather be known as someone who had an affair then religious. One is real the other is just supidity. What does god have to do with anything. Humans wer meant to procreate its in our genes. Affairs are actually truer to our true animal (which we are) selves.

ALM 11/5/2009 12:39:02 PM
To hell with the sadistic media and the "Oh so Holy public" trying to prove themselves better than others by commenting on other people's misfortune. great minds discuss ideas, medium minds discuss events mediocre minds discuss people.

izak 11/5/2009 12:41:10 PM
Pieta: If people like Joost call themselves Christians and preach to the world (as christians usually do) then I can only count myself lucky for not being one. And how can you decide on behalf of others they will be stoned?

Chris G 11/5/2009 12:43:32 PM
I say forgive and forget. Let's forgive them both and forget that they exist. I doubt they're sorry at all, just sorry that they got caught.

Hennie 11/5/2009 12:47:38 PM
I can not understand how any person even if he/she does not even have a brain support these two fornicators. What do you tell children that is supposed to look up to them.Pity the Robben Island jail does not exist anymore. That is where they belong

Get a life 11/5/2009 12:50:26 PM
It's a shame. Joost's private life is just that and should stay behind closed doors. What happens in his private life has nothing to do with anyone other than himself, his immediate family, and God. Get on with your own life and leave others alone to live theirs they way they choose and be thankful you don't have to live your life in the public eye. Joost and his family have to deal with the fallout - don't make is worse for them. Joe Public will ruin any chances of these people making their lives whole again. Let it go and get a life.

Bruce 11/5/2009 12:51:12 PM
Who gets tired of masturbating?

Juan 11/5/2009 12:54:11 PM
All I hope for is that all men learn from Steve & Joost. Life is not a Hollywood movie where one can dive into others beds for the hell of it, there is consequences in real life. Cheating on your loved ones sends out a message of betrayal & that is worse than losing a loved one to the grave. If Joost & Steve cannot understand this they will never have true remorse no matter how much the pay lip service. Steve will have no legacy, Joost still has an opportunity to save his!

Jason 11/5/2009 12:58:44 PM
Joost you are my Hero, luckily i don't have daughters

fan 11/5/2009 12:59:01 PM
All heroes are flawed. it does not make him less of the best scrum half ever. he won the cup for us, leave his private life alone

Tshepo 11/5/2009 1:00:49 PM
Who gets tired of masturbating??

BadBoy 11/5/2009 1:01:54 PM
We are all sinners, why are we judging Joost. let God deal with him and his sin. all Joost and Amor need is the public to leave them to sort out their problems. Public interference will only add to the problems they have.
Hansie was also crucified by the public and media. Give our celebtries a break

bob 11/5/2009 1:02:09 PM
Dear Wizi and Atti as Jacqui stated, what has god got to do with this keep your christian opinions to your self and freeken in side your church...News24 is not a place for your Christian views just like my view of Christianity has no place on news24 either.....
There is no god ask Darwin he will tell you
Atheist I am proudly

I made the same mistake a long time ago,my girlfriend forgave me and we now own a house together with one beautiful child and I learnt from it and I don't think I'll ever do that again(let God be the judge and give the poor guy a chance to try and save his marriage.)

CvZ 11/5/2009 1:09:00 PM
Funny how Amor knew about this in August already but they came out with the story just before Joost book was released?

margaret 11/5/2009 1:14:28 PM
i feel sorry for Amor - this is not something nice to go through and having to do it in public probably makes it even harder. But hey she knew what she was getting into as Joost was a married man when she hooked up with him - a leopard does not change his spots.

ZAPPA 11/5/2009 1:20:44 PM
Well Joost has had his up's and down's and in's and out's now its time to face the music. Good luck mate.

Rose 11/5/2009 1:33:41 PM
So much for all the individual comments and critisizm's thereof, that it is their (the VD Westhuizens)business, when actually this whole sordid mess was a result of Joost's willing particiapation in an adulterous fling (make that at least two, possibly more)finally acknowledging his guilt in the media and on national TV. Writing a detailed account of how to go about betraying, breaking vows, lying - subjecting his family to even more humiliation by publicizing the events - what can he expect, other than exactly the kind of prevailing comments and attitudes since he has chosen to make a public spectacle of the whole debacle? If he had been truly reticent about his behaviour and the ultimate shame he had brought on himself and his family, would he have wanted to profit from this sad, sordid mess?

Skeletor1 11/5/2009 1:35:44 PM
I also believe in forgive and forget. Maybe Jacqui must watch out because maybe next time she will be in the receiving end of something like this. I think we should move on and give them (Joost and Amor) time to sort it out. At Tshepo, my father said you will get hair on you hands from mastrubating too much (STOP LOOKING AT YOUR HANDS!)

Deana de Villiers 11/5/2009 1:41:16 PM
Don't roll in the mud with a pig - you both get dirty and the pig enjoys it.

Paul 11/5/2009 1:44:18 PM
Ag Steve, Is it necessary to be so melo-dramatic??

JSC 11/5/2009 1:46:58 PM
Steve has nothing else to do than to comment on others people's mishaps, because nobody invites him to shows anymore.

Chandler 11/5/2009 1:58:20 PM
I always knew he was guilty, but one thing you should never do is confess. Let sleeping dogs lie Juiced vd Westhuizen.

roosta 11/5/2009 2:03:12 PM
Forgive the sinner but not the sin.

@ styles 11/5/2009 2:06:07 PM
no no, you cannot compare Hansie to this two totally different arguments! the shame of it is joost got caught red handed, denied everything till he was blue in the face and made an absolute ass out himself, so we may not be judging or condemning him but he wants to play up to the public like he is doing then he must stand the critism!!

Judith Armstrong 11/5/2009 2:17:37 PM
Steve - I agree with you. I do hope that Amor can find it within herself to forgive. She will never forget, that's for sure. If their love is strong enough it will prevail but I do wish the media would leave them alone. Malema is more entertaining than the agony of the van der Westhuizens.

Judith 11/5/2009 2:22:02 PM
fan, I couldn't agree with you more. He was my hero on the rugby field and the fact that he has been a little silly doesn't detract from his superiority on the rugby field.

G2 11/5/2009 2:22:39 PM
all this talk of Joost confessing... isn't it strange that he denied everything for so long, and then chose to come out and confess in his autobiography - kind of like andre agassi... smells to me like they are trying to make money off of their confessions, in which case one has to question whether their remorse is genuine, or a publicity stunt...

Al 11/5/2009 2:27:37 PM
Ja, you News24 guys, you are trying to protect Mr Hofmeyer. One of my gay friends (high profile) told me of the other side of Steve. Ok, shut me up.

Boerseun 11/5/2009 2:42:23 PM
No, Steve, not the anti-christ, but a lying, cheating husband who were stupid enough to be caught on camera.

Angel 11/5/2009 2:53:09 PM
I think it is terrible that they are not allowed a private life. Most men are guilty of the same or similar charges but they don't have it on the front page of newspapers because they are not well known.
Why should any of them tell the public anything? I think issues like this should be private and the idiots that make it public deserve to be the shamed.
I am a woman and I have been married.

EM 11/5/2009 3:24:17 PM
Guys we all make mistakes. Give this couple a break. They dont need our advice or opinion.

Hans Pietersen 11/5/2009 3:43:14 PM
Good heavens! A month ago George Claassen was the antichrist, now it's Joost! Who's next? Obama?

Oops, sorry - he was named that already .

Goozer 11/5/2009 3:52:39 PM
Eish! Better just to masturbate...

KO 11/5/2009 3:59:09 PM
But isn't this the second time Joost goes throught this? One should learn from one's mistakes not keep making the same mistakes.

Alan 11/5/2009 5:13:25 PM
Good luck Joost. You are still a hero to me. I think the dust will settle (eventually). Understandably you are going through a very difficult time. I trust that you and Amor can hang in there and please get someone to edit out all the negative comments from judgmental people and read and re-read the messengers from the ones that send goodwill to you both - they are the only ones that are worth reading.
