Cape Town ? The People's Celebration Concert, boasting a star-studded line-up that includes Snoop Dogg, Sean Paul, Mario and Rihanna, promises to be a not-to-be-missed event for hip hop and R&B fans.
The celebration, collaborating hip hop heavyweights, R&B stars and plenty of local artists, is set to become an annual festival. The People's Celebration Concert will be a continuous ten-hour event and is the first of its kind in South Africa.
Snoop Dogg made headlines recently when he urged California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to spare the life of reformed gang leader and condemned prisoner, Stanley "Tookie" Williams.
Snoop Dogg is a musical and cultural icon, hip-hop Renaissance man, entrepreneur, and Hollywood heavyweight. His rise to fame began in 1993 with the release of his debut album Doggystyle. Fuelled by the rapper's street credentials and criminal infamy, the anticipation for the album was unprecedented - selling 1.5 million albums in advance of the release, and was also the first debut rap album to hit the charts at number one.
By the time his second album, The Doggfather was released the following year, Doggystyle had already gone quadruple platinum.
He was the embodiment of 90's Gangsta Rap, contributing songs to a number of movie soundtracks including Bad Boys II and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. Snoop's 2003 "Project Revolution" tour added a "rock" flare to his old and new school favourites, and saw a musical collaboration with rock bands Lincoln Park and Korn His eighth studio album, Snoop Dogg R&G: Rhythm & Gangsta The Masterpiece, cemented his superstar status, with the mega-hits Drop It Like Its Hot, Lets Get Blown and Signs, all climbing the charts.
Sean Paul, known for his dancehall reggae, has won numerous prestigious awards, including the Grammy for Best Reggae Album and his breakthrough album, Dutty Rock sold over six million copies.
Mario, known for hits such as I Don't Wanna Know, Let Me Love You and Just A Friend, has won critical acclaim from both critics and fans.
Rihanna, has re-energised the music scene with her rich, cultural fusion of dancehall and raga, with a fresh R&B soul sound. Her powerful singing voice conjures up feelings and experiences way beyond her years, and she is a talented songwriter who has co-written much of her album. Rihanna's debut album, Music of The Sun, was nominated for 2005's Record of The Year.
The concerts will be held on April 27 at the Johannesburg Stadium in Gauteng, April 29 at the Absa stadium in Durban and on May 1 at the Green Point stadium in Cape Town.
