Survivor losing viewers

2006-10-27 09:58

Amanda de Lange

Johannesburg - Survivor South Africa's viewers have almost dropped by half since the first episode was broadcast on September 3.

After the record figures of the launch episode - 1.25 million viewers with an AR (Audience Rating) of 6.5 - the figures for last Sunday night's episode fell to 675 470 with an AR of 3.5.

According to a spokesperson for Telmar, the company whose computer programme was used by Beeld to obtain the statistics, the AR is determined by means of a formula that calculates the number of viewers watching the programme and the time they spend watching.

Telmar's figures are released by research company AGB Nielsen, the same company that provides viewing figures and ARs to M-Net.

AGB Nielsen's figures are determined by research done in households which has to comply with certain requirements.

These households receive a "person meter" - an apparatus that every family member has to use when they watch television. A viewer has to press a button for the programme he or she is watching and every time the channel is changed.

"These figures are lower than we expected and it is obviously disappointing," Carl Fisher, head of M-Net's Local Productions said on Thursday. Fisher added that M-Net's determination of viewing figures was done differently to the system used by Telmar.

He said the channel was, however, hoping that the figures would improve after last week's tribe merge.

Fisher also thinks the low figure for the past Sunday's episode could be attributed to the Brazilian Grand Prix that was screened in the same time slot.

"Something like that will definitely influence viewing."

I for one dont watch survivor. Its boring. There is no action and it really isnt about survival. The main thing that put me off is the fact that famous faces was chosen. Ive seen them on TV before... why put them on again? If you want more viewers you would have better challenges and not this nonesense of girl scouts. We are south africans and SA is tough hard people. Ask me for ideas on what sort of challenges to use with the next survival and u will have viewers.

Wathed the first 15 minutes of the show and must say it was the most boring of an artificial imitation of the real Survivor I've ever seen. Why do we have to keep copy cat the reality shows of other countries. KOM BY!

Now think about this, it was the final Grandprix of the year, every one who is a GP Fan would have watched that insted, plus Man U VS Liverpool and it beeing michaels last race, common, lets see the numbers after this sunday

Between the contestants and the host it's hard to choose which has finally driven the viewers away. South Africans are intelligent people we cannot be entertained by drivel!!! Give us real entertainment. I just wish I could sue somebody for the ten minutes of my life I can never get back!!

6pm on a Sunday night is not the ideal time for the show either. I tend to forget to watch as the weekend is winding down and there is other stuff to do. However, on the occasional that I have watched it, I can't say that I was terribly impressed by it. Can't quite put my finger on it as to why, but it is almost as though the people know they are on TV and are playing a part, whereas the US Survivor, they appear to actually be taking part in a game of survivor. SA one just doesn't feel real.

I have one word for it. BORING. I watched the first one and never bothered again.

The grand prix started after Survivor had ended.Man Utd-Liverpool was 4 hours earlier!! it is just plain boring...bring back BB,for better viewing...

I agree with Lukas de Kock, why do we have to see the same faces over and over again. The are a lot of people out there who could do a far better job than these guys. Most of them are just marketing themselves, they know that other producers are watching and this is their ticket of becoming "celebrities". It seems like we are always there to mess up all the reality shows, maybe its time we get the real guys (producers, casting members) to show us how its done or we should forget about them.

I don't think the grand prix affected the viewing of survivor as it started an hour later than survivor. Those who really wanted to watch both, had enough time to watch the finish and catch the start of one of the best final races in F1.
